Hullo to all in Atuldom

He formed, together with Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand, “the golden trio” of Indian cinema in the 1950s and 1960s. There was camaraderie between the three contemporary actors, all renowned for their own style. He was the biggest Indian star of this era, a national icon, holding the status of a matinée idol. He was the country’s highest-paid actor during this period.

I don’t need to mention that we are reading about the idol of many actors who made their debut in films post the 1960s- Dilip Kumar who was born Muhammad Yusuf Khan in Peshawar, which is presently in Pakistan. He is said to have been childhood friends with Raj Kapoor who grew up in the same neighbourhood.

Dilipsaab is the only actor in India to have delivered at least one bonafide “hit” at the box office for 15 years straight, from 1947 to 1961. He also did not give a single flop in a period of 15 years from 1952 to 1965. According to many sources, he is the only Indian actor to have more than one film (3 or 4) among the top 10 highest-grossing films of Indian cinema when adjusted for ticket-price inflation. These films are Naya Daur (1957), Mughal-e-Azam (1960), Gunga Jumna (1961), and Kranti (1981).

(Wish I knew some trade pundit/s who would be able to give us exact figures.)

In his career (of almost 54 years), Dilip saab received eight Filmfare Awards for Best Actor (from a total of 19 nominations), the most for any actor (till Shahrukh Khan equalled it), and a Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award (1993). He won the award for his roles in ‘Daag’, ‘Azaad’, ‘Devdas’, ‘Naya Daur’, ‘Kohinoor’, ‘Leader’, ‘Ram Aur Shyam’, & ‘Shakthi’.
The Government of India honoured Dilipsaab with the Padma Bhushan in 1991, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1994 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2015. Plus, he was the Sheriff (an honorary position) of Bombay (as it was called back then) in 1980.

Interesting trivia about the office of the Sheriff is that Mumbai & Kolkata are the only two cities in India to maintain that post which is just below the rank of Mayor. Frank Mores (Times Of India editor), Vijay Merchant (legendary cricketer), Sunil Dutt, Usha Kiran, Sunil Gavaskar, are the ONLY names on the long list of Sheriffs of Bombay that I recognize.

What ever I have written till now is common knowledge among Hindi film lovers.

I found some interesting titbits online, as I was writing this post. It seems Shubash Ghai had planned a war film with Dilip Kumar heading a cast compromising of two self-proclaimed Dilipsaab fans viz. Amitabh Bachchan & Shahrukh Khan. That would have been as great to watch as “Shakthi”; that starred Amitabh Bachchan with Dilip Kumar playing his father- an upright police inspector . That was not to be, as the film was shelved when Dilipsaab left the project.

The films of Dilip saab that I have seen (many of them on repeat) had Vyjayanthimala, Saira Banu, Waheeda Rehman, Meena Kumari as his romantic interest. I have not seen his films (other than Mughal-e-Azam) where Madhubala was his heroine. Nutan & Nanda were two leading ladies of the 1960s who didn’t get a chance to act opposite him as the romantic co-actor. This was rectified, to an extent, when Nutan signed on for Shubash Ghai’s ‘Karma’ where Dilip saab played her husband. ‘Kanoon Apna Apna’ was another 1980s film which had Dilip Kumar & Nutan playing senior characters. It seems there was an incomplete/ unreleased film in the 1950s that starred the two legends. Nanda played his wife in B.R. Chopra’s “Mazdoor”.

“Mazdoor” (1983) had Dilip Kumar, Nanda, Raj Babbar, Suresh Oberoi, Rati Agnihotri, Padmini Kolhapure, Iftekhar, Madan Puri, Raj Kiran and Johnny Walker in the cast. Yunus Parvez, Jagdish Raj, Nazir Hussain were also in the cast with a horde of known faces playing mill-workers & their families. The music of the film was composed by R. D. Burman. Hasan Kamal and Faiz Ahmed Faiz were the lyricist for the seven songs of this film, of which the blog has three. Mahendra Kapoor, Asha Bhosle, Chandrashekhar Gadgil, Hariharan & Salma Agha were the playback singers used. This was veteran actress Nanda’s final appearance before her retirement from acting.

The story of “Mazdoor” was almost like B. R. Chopra’s “Naya Daur” (1957). That is, “Naya Daur” was the story showing conflict between man & machine; “Mazdoor” had the additional angle of the mill-owner’s son rubbing his workers the wrong way, which leads the workers to resign from the mill & start a cooperative mill with Dinanath (Dilip Kumar) leading the workers. Plus, the love triangle between Dinanath’s trusted engineer (Raj Babbar), his daughter (Padmini Kolhapure) and the daughter of a multimillionaire (Rati Agnihotri) was added to the story.

7th July is the death anniversary of the ICON. He passed away at the age of 98, in Mumbai and was given a burial with state honours under COVID-19 restrictions in 2021. Remembering, the actor-producer known for method acting with a song that shows him as a proud & happy grandfather. The dancing reminds me of the various dances that we have seen hi enact in films like ‘Ganga Jamuna’, ‘Sangharsh’, etc.
