“Mai” (2013) was the story of an old desolate mother (Mai) suffering from Alzheimer, who is being tossed between her four children.
“The only son, who she had great expectations from, isolates her the moment he lands a job in a foreign country. The 2 youngest daughters try to run away from the responsibility too. The eldest daughter (Madhu) a woman of substance, and self-made, takes a stand against the wishes of her husband and daughter, takes the responsibility of tending for her. During her stay with her daughter Mai reminisces her good old days of sorrow and happiness in flashes, as she switches in and out of her insanity. As time progresses Mai’s Alzheimer attacks goes from bad to worse. Slowly and steadily she starts reliving her past moments in the present situation. The family life of her daughter is in shambles due to the prevailing tension with her husband (Subhash). And at the same time, the daughter has the moral responsibility of caring for her sick mother. Madhu balances her disgruntled family and work pressure. The support of her seniors and staff at the workplace helps her to manage her life until; one day the progressing condition of her mother forces her to quit her job. And the relation between Mai and her son-in-law takes a miraculous turn which changes his life forever.”
This is the synopsis of ‘Mai’.
The film was the debut directorial venture of Mahesh Kodiyal. The film was produced by Alliance Entertainment, Rhythm D’vine Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. & Madhusudan Group. The film had music by Nitin Shankar. Sahil Sultanpuri & Manoj Tapadia were the lyricist for the songs of the film that were sung by Asha Bhosle, Amit Kumar, Sukhwinder Singh, Payal Dev, Arjun Kanungo & Zanai Bhosle.
The name Arjun Kanungo is new for me. The following is what Google said about this artist
‘Arjun Kanungo (born 6 September 1990) is an Indian singer and music composer, recording artist, music producer, and entrepreneur from Mumbai. He began his career at the age of 17, initially working on building recording studios and developing his skills as a recording engineer and music producer. He later performed as a touring singer and guitarist for Asha Bhosle. His mother, a pistol shooter by profession, trained Kanungo in the sport where he won multiple medals at the national level. He also played Basketball for his college and the state team of Maharashtra.
Another name, that is new for me, among the list of singers, is Payal Dev.
Googling tells me that she is a singer, music composer who was born in Ramgarh in present day Jharkhand. The song in ‘Mai’ was her debut song in films. Subsequently, she has sung in Tamil, Gujarati, Telugu, Bengali, Punjabi etc.
There is one more name in the list of singers – Zanai Bhosle. I have heard of her, a few times, in the last few years. There have been videos of Zanai Bhosle, on social media platforms, where she is seen sharing the microphone with THE ASHA BHOSLE. On further digging, I found that Zanai Bhosle is the granddaughter, daughter of Asha Tai’s son Anand Bhosle.
“Mai” had Padmini Kolhapure playing Madhu, Mai’s oldest daughter & Ram Kapoor (famous in the television world) played Madhu’s husband Subhash. AND Mai was played by ASHA BHOSLE.
The film was touted as Asha Tai’s debut in Hindi films, at the age of 79. We, the followers of this blog, know that Asha Tai had acted as a child in the Marathi film “Maaze Baal”, in the 1940s, along with her siblings. Atulites also know that she was seen in a recording studio for a song in the 1977 film ‘Taxi Taxie’. Asha Bhosle was also seen in non-film-music videos at various times in her career. She has teamed up with international singers like Boy George, Adnan Sami (Pakistani), Brett Lee (Australian cricketer) etc for non-film albums.
We are having a song from “Mai” today on the occasion of the 93rd birthday of ASHA BHOSLE. I have always tried to write a post for the birthday of Asha Tai who’s work I simply adore. I love to hear her songs -solos/ duets no-bar. There are hundreds of her duets with the legendary singers which make me feel “YEH DIL MAANGE MORE”. This is the 1st time we are celebrating the legendary Asha Bhosle’s birthday without her mortal presence.
Missing Asha Tai who was honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India’s highest award in the field of cinema in 2000. In 2008, she was honoured by the Government of India with the Padma Vibhushan, the second-highest civilian honour of the country. The Guinness Book of World Records acknowledged her in 2011 as the most recorded artist in music history.
She lives on in the hearts and minds of her fans- language no bar.
Today’s song will remind the listeners of songs like ‘chanda mama door ke’; ‘chanda re chanda re chupe rehna’; ‘aai re aai nanhe munne raja ko’ and many more lories (lullabies) that Asha Bhosle had given her voice to.
