It is with mixed emotions that I write this post.
No, it’s not quite what you’re thinking. Usually “mixed emotions” involve an element of happiness, tempered with sadness. Like parents sending their son or daughter abroad for higher studies. On one hand, they’re happy for their child’s future, on the other there’s an element of sadness that they will be separated by a considerable amount of distance and time.

Disclaimer: If I appear to be even more incoherent in this post than I usually am (and that would be quite an achievement!), blame it on Saira Banu. 🙂 The line that comes to mind is “Kya kya na sahey hum ne sitam aap ke khaatir”. 🙂 Further explanation in the post.

Today is the 15th of August ֠a date that has a very special meaning and significance for all Indians, wherever they may be in this world. For it was on the 15th of August 1947 that India got its independence from British rule.
This date is therefore understandably celebrated by Indians. It is a national holiday in the country too.

Today, the 13th of August, is the birthday of one of Hindi cinema’s big stars of the 1950s and 60s, Vyjanthimala.
If one were to go by her recorded year of birth as 1936, today is her 77th birthday. While recording this fact, I could not help observing that two other legends of the same period, Waheeda Rehman and Nutan, are also recorded as 1936 born. Somebody up there must have been in a liberal mood in 1936 to decide to send these three to Planet Earth in the same year!

It feels like only yesterday that I said I would post more non-Rafisaab, non-Kishoreda songs because these two singers dominate my posts and I want to pay tribute to other singers too. It feels like just yesterday. Wait, it WAS yesterday! ?

Only a few days ago, on the 4th of August, many of us paid a tribute to our beloved Kishore Kumar on his birth anniversary. As is the practice, most of the songs posted on this blog on that date were tributes to him.
