The life lived in this finite world with infinite possibilities is nothing if not the memories collected in the heart and mind. The audio-visual medium, overdose or not, is the ultimate. Some of those lasting memorable visuals are of the silver screen and black & white television screen. I may forget some of the names of those characters and actors, but the emotions conveyed and invoked in those scenes stay with me and have survived the test of time.

One of those lasting memories is of the Pakistani Television series called ‘Dhoop Kinaare’. Those were the times of late 80’s when VCRs were hired along with video cassettes of these serials and people did binge watching of all episodes of the serial. The same as what people do with OTT serials now. But the similarity ends there. These are Urdu Serials written by contemporary literary writers. Zubaan ki shaayistgi was the main attraction plus the packaging in characters.

There was a precursor to ‘Dhoop Kinaare’ titled ‘Ankahee’ which was equally popular. Both different serials but finite ones with happy endings. Though ‘Ankahee’ ends in a twisted kind of happy ending. I have tried to find a good print on YouTube some years ago, of ‘Dhoop Kinare’, but the one I got to see was very bad quality audio/video.

I found this Wikipedia page on ‘Dhoop Kinaare’ to revive my memories and find that it was all of 17 episodes. The page does say that the “In India, the show was remade by Sony Entertainment Television India as ‘Kuch Toh Log Kahenge’. It started on 3 October 2011 and had total of 346 episodes”. Recently Kamath Sir has written a post for the title song of this serial.

The bad quality audio/video meant that I don’t get to hear/understand most of the dialogues being spoken. The facial expressions are also very unclear to view. The memory of watching it on VCR is also a ‘dhundli yaad’ but will serve my purpose here. First is the intense dislike/hatred that Dr. Ahmer (Raahat Kazmi) has for the unknown granddaughter of his foster father. The affection he has for the house, where each nook and corner, has unlimited memories for him with his foster father, who meant the world to him. Yet the father has left the house that they both built together, with their own hands, to the unknown granddaughter. This makes him feel like an orphan all over again as the father gave preference to his blood ties. Rendering him bitter and un-trusting of kind people, in a way.

Dr. Zoya (Marina Khan) works as an intern in the same hospital, where he is the HOD of Pediatrics. He is very derisive in his contempt of what he considers her ineptitude and non-seriousness. This, without knowing that she is the same grand daughter of his foster father, who inherited the house he is so fond of and desperate to buy.

The characters are all woven in the emotions, their past and present hurts. There are stories within them which are revealed in flash back.The treatment of the Indian serial was very different, and it by-passed the ‘house and inheritance’ matter. At least I do not remember it. Glamorous packaging was there in both with romanticism, but in ‘Dhoop Kinaare’ the strong characterization is the lasting take away.

There is a scene when, Dr. Zoya’s father visits Dr. Ahmer at the hospital. He is the first one to discover that Dr. Ahmer is the one trying to buy the house, left to Dr. Zoya by her maternal grandfather. Afterwards, Dr. Ahmer goes with the father to the hospital entrance. As soon as they come outside, the father who is wearing his spectacles, says“matla’a achaanak se abar alood hogaya hai”, meaning ‘the sky is full of clouds all of a sudden’. Dr. Ahmer promptly takes the spectacles of the father and wipes them with a handkerchief before returning it to him. Having realized that Dr. Ahmer is the foster son of his estranged late father-in-law, who never forgave his daughter for marrying a person not approved by him and going away, Dr. Zoya’s father is aware that there are troubles or storms waiting for them in the relationship even before it began.

“matla’a achaanak se abar alood hogaya hai” is the everyday event for people living in hot and humid climes and wearing spectacles. As soon as we come out of an air conditioned space, the spectacles frost over with the humid air vaporizing the cold glass. For clarity in the event happening.

A couple more serials are coming to mind seen at that time, like ‘Parchhaiyan’ and ‘Tanhaaiyan’ with lead actors forming a chain of sorts. ‘Parchhaiyan’ had Rahat Kazmi in lead with Sahira Kazmi (details about them are available in the blog). ‘Ankahi’ had Shehnaz Shaikh with Javed Shaikh. This Shehnaz Shaikh was the lead character in ‘Tanhaaiyan’ and Marina Khan played her younger sister. Then Marina Khan as Dr. Zoya and Rahat Kazmi as Dr. Ahmer in ‘Dhoop Kinaare’. There is another common link in all these serials i.e. all these were written by Haseena Moin. These were the most famous and best serials of that era. It appears so from what I am finding online now. This was the first wave of the Pakistani TV serials, second wave started in 2011 with ‘Humsafar’ of HUM TV.

Haseena Moin has written the script of Raj Kapoor’s ‘Henna’ (1991) also. I have learnt on the net now that Raj Kapoor wanted Shehnaz Shaikh of ‘Ankahi’ and ‘Tanhaaiyan’ fame to do the title role in ‘Henna’. But Shehnaz Shaikh refused, so Haseena Moin recommended Zeba Bakhtiyar for the role. Marina Khan has also acted in one Indian serial titled ‘Tanha’ also written by Haseena Moin for Star Plus in mid-90’s maybe. I found only this title song link on YouTube by Kumar Sanu – “Dekhiye To Lagta Hai, Zindagi Ki Raahon Mein“.

I knew about this serial at StarPlus, having seen it, but cannot remember much about it now. Javed Akhtar is the lyricist of that title song.

I am presenting today another song by Javed Akhtar, sung by Sonu Nigam. This is the last remaining song of the film ‘Dil Chaahta Hai’ (2001). Composers are Shankar Ehsan Loy. The film has 6 songs, five of which are already posted here on our blog.

This is my 4th post of this film’s music score and ‘Tanhaai’ is my favourite, because of Sonu Nigam and also the composition. Unique instruments and their different sound carried the new-ness at the turn of the century to another level in Hindi film music.This song is a solo with no chorus, but still seems like all the elements shown in the picturization are singing the song with Sonu Nigam. There must be a technique of cinematic visualization to sync with the music in this fashion.

As the song ends in the movie, Aakash (Amir Khan) is sitting in the living room of his apartment in Sydney overlooking the harbor. His father has sent him to Australia to look after the business there, so that he grows up and learns to be responsible, as a disciplinary action. Aakash meets Shalini (Priety Zinta) on the flight to Sydney, exactly at interval point in the film and continues to meet up and sing songs and watch operas with her. Now Shalini has gone back to India to marry her fiancé, who is the real son of her foster parents. Aakash has realized that he has fallen hard for Shalini and this is no game. His life is barren and lonely without her.

In the desolate mood, Aakash calls his father, asks for his mother. Father realizes something is amiss, asks him if he is not feeling well. Aakash replies, all is well, and that he is busy whole day and tired by evening. Father feels compassion for once and asks him to come back to India. Inevitable, as the movie had to end sometime.

It really has been a while– I do not follow the current Hindi films scene on a regular basis. I think this started in mid 1980s. One factor was that my life became quite mobile as far as my work situation was concerned. Moving to Bombay (now Mumbai) in 1987, then on to US in 1988, back in Delhi 1996, change of workplace two times, and then back again in the US in 2000. Back in Delhi 2009/10, and then more ongoing travel albeit shorter and less frequent.

There are two more factors that I can think of. My deep interest in Hindi films and film music has been with me since I was a student of 3rd/4th grade school. A big chunk of my memory is full of many items starting from that period. However, as we get on to 1980s, and beyond the mid 1980s, the flavors of music in films were changing. For good or bad, I do not make this judgment, but it became different from the likeable and favorite stock stored in me. And so the interest started to wane somewhat. 1980s was also a period of significant transition and churn in terms of the artists and persona who had molded my interest and my love for this art form. Many left us, and many others were sidelined, for reasons I once again do not want to make a judgment on. Bottom line was that the music that was being created in the industry was holding less and less attraction and interest for me.

No, this is not a blanket dismissal of everything that has happened in the industry since mid 1980s. Just that there were progressively lesser artifacts that would catch my attention, and get added to my list of favorites in the memory stores.

Another factor that started becoming more prominent in life relates to the advent of the internet in the 1990s. Being in the IT industry, we were always at the forefront of the changes that were being brought in technology. Email appeared, messaging appeared, and network connectivity in some limited manner became available. Working in IT companies, I was always connected to whatever was the extent of the online net availability. Public networks and home connectivity was still a few years ahead, but from the offices, we had the luxury of being able to access whatever online resources were available then.

I remember I was on an assignment in San Dimas, close to LA in California. While browsing the internet from my office I stumbled upon a web site that had been put up by a gentleman named Amarjeet Singh Anand, who lived in San Fernando, further south from where I was. I discovered a gold mine – songs that were heard on radio in the 60s and 70s, and then never heard of again. The recordings were very low bit rate – the networks could not support high volumes. But I latched on to this website, and my entire weekends were spent in office, dedicated to downloading everything I could. The websites were not restricted, the concept and ability to download was not well known, and the office networks also did not have any controls as yet. Once having figured out the download capability, it was a trip into a wonderland of music of the years gone by, the music that was burnt onto the hard drives in my memory.

Then started this new phase of my passion for this music. Now the trip became to collect Hindi film songs in digital form. As time progressed, more and more online resources were discovered. Also one started getting introduced to more people who were doing such collections – the network grew and so did the collections by exchange and sharing.

And so, the interest in the current Hindi cinema and its music never really took any roots inside. The search still continues. This activity brought me in contact with many more like minded collectors, archivists and film history buffs. Geet Kosh came into life and a lot changed after that. And then Atul ji stepped into my life through Atul-Song-A-Day. And of course, the things in life were never the same again.

So in the current times, viewing of films and listening to music is more as per recommendations from friends and family members. I continue to read enough news to keep abreast of the current happenings in Hindi cinema, but only rarely do I get motivated to see any films of the new crop.

But that does not mean that my contact with current cinema is zero. As I said, based on recommendations I do keep in touch. The film ‘Dil Chaahta Hai’ (2001) – I had heard good things about this film. A maiden production effort by Farhan Akhtar ; a story revolving around the lives of three very close friends, and their fortunes in personal relationships.

I was based in San Jose at that time. I think I got to see this film probably in 2003 or 2004. A junior Indian colleague at work coaxed me to see this film. He expressed surprise that I had not seen this film. He promptly made a DVD disc for me, to view at leisure.

In many ways, it was a first introduction to many an actor from the newer generation. It was the first time to find out that Farhan Akhtar is the son of Javed Akhtar (from his earlier marriage with Honey Irani). Also the first time to be introduced to the lyrics from the pen of Javed Akhtar. Also to know that the tradition of duo and trio music directors in Hindi cinema is still alive with Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. And to be introduced to the new crop of actors – Aamir, Priety, Saif, Akshay (Khanna), Sonali et al. And to find out to my dismay that my sweet little Bobby, the heartthrob of my college days, had actually aged.

The film is about love, about different flavors of it. That different people view it differently, treat it differently, have different interpretations and expectations. The fundamental message being that each person has a different opinion of love, and it is a great fortune to meet someone who has the similar view in life. Yes, truly a great fortune. Having been fed on primarily happy ending fairy tales that I had been viewing since childhood, the mindset of the child within was that there is always a smooth ride and a happy outcome of a love story. No, not that I have not viewed films at variance with this view, but still. After a gap of having kept distance from Hindi films, ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ was a wonderful refresher course in looking at filmy love stories once again.

I liked the film at first viewing itself. And also the music and songs. A learning for me that yes, music can be refreshing coming from artists whose names I had never heard before, and names that did not inspire any confidence. And yet, this film and its music entered my list of favorites. And that too, post 2000.

Four songs of this film are already on the blog. I present today a lilting exchange between the girl-boy pair in their effort to find the perfect match in life. There is a certain old world charm and a slowly sinking in surrealism in the presentation of this song. Sameer (role played by Saif Ali Khan) and Pooja (role played by Sonali Kulkarni) are friends who go to see a film. The magic happens in the cinema hall, and we come face to face with another “dream of wide awake eyes” experience. Immersed in the music, both Sameer and Pooja fancy themselves to be the protagonists on the screen. The love song being played is “dreamed” of as being enacted by them. There is disbelief at first, which is then followed by a disarming acceptance of a shared experience that brings to surface realizations that they have probably been nurturing inside.

And the surrealism comes to a sharp pitch at the end of the song sequence, when the entire audience inside the hall joins the love birds in chorus, acknowledging the presence of an “Aha” moment amidst them. A cute presentation. The song picturization, the dress up, the dance steps all are an enlivening throwback on the earlier decades of Hindi cinema.

This song once again further emboldens the firm belief that all it takes to make love and consent appear between the supposed love birds is three minutes (in this case five), i.e. the duration of a song. All that is in doubt is set right, all that is hidden beneath surprised appearances surfaces, the smiles come on, and the hand-in-hand arms entwined happy outcome is signaled at the end of the three minutes. Well, somethings will probably never change. And thankfully so. 😀

WHAAATTT!!! is my first reaction. I am shattered by the flash news.
God can’t be so heartless.

The tributes are flowing in the various news channels.

Amitabh has twittered: He is gone…! Rishi Kapoor…. Gone…just passed away! .. I am destroyed!

Juhi has said: I am shocked beyond words.

Shakti Kapoor is saying: I can’t digest that he is not there. This shouldn’t have happened (is what is Shakti has been telling).

These were the first reactions. In his telephonic talk with the news channels Shakti Kapoor was telling that he looked fine and on the road to be being ‘fit and fine’ when he last met him before the lock-down. But of course it is a known fact the big C is a deceiver. I have gone through the feeling that Shakti was talking of.

Rishi “Chintu” Kapoor has left us in shock. We are yet to come out of the shock that Irfan Khan pushed us into. Both great performers. We don’t know who we should send condolences to in this hour of grief – their families, best friends, colleagues or we his fans.

I began this post as soon as I saw the news item. Now it is four in the afternoon.

Then I let myself cool down, very difficult. There are too many thoughts running through the head. He was very cute as the tiny boy walking in the rain with his siblings. He was a National award winner for his role in ‘Mera Naam Joker’ (1970) and best actor award for his debut in adults roles in ‘Bobby’ (1973).

I don’t know how to pay a tribute to my favourite actor/s Irfan and Chintu. So I tried to look for movies where the two have acted together – cannot be possible that these two have not done a movie together, considering that Rishi was very active playing so many diverse characters in recent years. I remembered a movie which I have seen on TV a few years back where Chintu played a character inspired by Dawood Ibrahim and Irfan played Wali Khan an Indian intelligence operative whose mission was to keep an eye on the activities of the don and his gang. I vaguely remember that the movie had a long climax where Wali (Irfan Khan) and Arjun Rampal (also playing an Indian intelligence operative) stage the exchange of the captured don, bring him into Indian territory, and shoot the don when the don mocks the Indian judicial system etc. and how he will be back into his underworld activities. One thing that stayed with me after the movie was both the don’s character and Wali have a bloody end. But the movie itself was a gripping tale.

Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy were the music directors and Niranjan Iyengar the lyricist. The qawwali as picturized in the film gives us a look of almost the entire star cast headed by Rishi Kapoor alongwith Irfan Khan, Shruti Hassan, Arjun Rampal, Huma Qureshi, Shriswara, Nassar, KK Raina etc. Rishi Kapoor looked deadly in that getup.

And now he is not there. Even when we know that everyone has to go one day we don’t want people we like to go. But then that is the way of life and as I always say and what my mother believed in “Kal Kya Hoga Kis Ko Pata. . .”.

Thinking of two super actors, from different genres and eras May their soul be at peace now, at least they are eased of their pain

This is the story of a Telugu man born in Hyderabad in an upper middle-class Naidu family. He completes his schooling in a Boarding school in Yercaud. After graduating in Chemical Engineering from Osmania University, he proceeds to USA and completes M.S. in Chemical Engineering. He gets a good job in the USA as an Environment Consultant. So far so good. The boy has met successfully, the sequential schedules of most of the middle and upper middle-class families – Good schooling and college, higher studies in the USA followed by a good job there. The next in the sequence is finding a good bride for the boy to settle down and showcase him among the family and friends. But at this stage, there a break in the sequence of our Telugu man.

During his stay of about a decade in the USA, our man develops interest in film-making. Perhaps, he was influenced by watching many Hollywood films during his stay in the USA. Slowly, this interest turns into a passion. Now, he finds his job monotonous. One day, he resigns from the job and enroll himself in film making and acting courses. Armed with the story, screen-play and dialogues for his film, he returns to India. He selects himself as the actor who is the protagonist in the story of his first film in the making. He finalises a couple of other actors and actresses who are fresh faces. But his first obstacle in making the film is finding a financier who can invest money in his film.

Our man spends about a year in Mumbai for studying the nuances of film making and also finding a financier. He is disillusioned by the way Bollywood works. He also fails to find a financier for the film. He comes to the conclusion that if he wants to make a film on his own terms, he needs to finance the film himself. So, he goes back to the USA, works there for about a year and saves US$40000/-. With this money, he returns to India for good. In his earlier visit to Hyderabad, he had met a lady who is the boutique fashion shop owner. After audition, he ropes her in the film as an actor and makes her the partner in his film production company. The film’s shooting commences and is completed in 17 days at the total cost of about 17 lakhs. The film is submitted to the Censor Board for certification. And here our man faces the second hurdle.

The Censor Board suggests about two dozen of cuts including a kissing scene to certify the film. Our man visits to meet the Censor Board officials. He finds that if he agrees to the cuts suggested by the Censor Board, the entire sensibility of the film is lost. On the other hand, Censor Board is not prepared to certify the film without the cuts suggested by it. He files an appeal to the Appellate Authority of the Censor Board for the review of the cuts. The Appellate Authority upholds the views of our man. The film is certified without any cut but a couple of words in the dialogues are muted. Now the film is ready for the release. Here our man faces the third obstacle.

The film remains in the cans for nearly a year as no distributor is willing to take up to release the film. First, the film is in English language. Second, the film maker is an unknown entity to the film world apart from the absence of star value in the film’s cast. Third, the film’s story would have attracted only a section of the audience. In desperation, our young man releases the film on Doordarshan in 1997 on a paltry sum of Rs.2 lakh. But this gave the film some exposure to the English-speaking audience.

In the meanwhile, the film is shown in MAMI film festival in Mumbai sometime early 1998 and receives encouraging responses from the festival audience including Shyam Bengal. On the recommendation of Shyam Bengal, one of the leading film distributors of Mumbai watches the film in a preview theater and agrees to distribute the film. The film is released and receives tremendous support from the audience as well as from the critics. The film is a box office success. A new name of the producer-director is added to the list of parallel film-makers in India.

The young Telugu man is Nagesh Kukunoor and his maiden film is ‘Hyderabad Blues’ (1998). The owner of the boutique shop is Elahe Hiptoola who became the partner in Nagesh’s film production company, SIC, besides acting in some of his films and assisting him in the direction. The film revolves around a NRI who after spending a considerable time in the USA, is caught in a cross fire of Indian and foreign cultures. The film was in English language though a few dialogues were in Telugu and Hyderabadi Hindi.

After the success of ‘Hyderabad Blues’ (1998), Nagesh Kukunoor has produced and directed films such as ‘Rockford’ (1999), ‘Bollywood Calling’(2001), ‘3 Deewaaren’ (2003), ‘Hyderabad Blues-2’ (2004), ‘Iqbal’ (2005), ‘Dor’ (2006), ‘Bombay To Bangkok’ (2008), ‘8×10 Tasveer’ (2009), ‘Aashaayein’ (2010), ‘Mod’ (2011), ‘Lakshmi’ (2014), ‘Dhanak’ (2016) etc. Although many of his films have been critically acclaimed, some of which got national and international awards, most of them had failed at the box office collections.

Nagesh Kukunoor also tried his hand in producing and directing a couple of the ‘middle of the path’ films by taking Bollywood stars. In ‘8×10 Tasveer’ (2009), he got Akshya Kumar to play the lead role. In ‘Aashaayein’ (2010), he roped in John Abraham. Both these films did not fare well at the box office. So he has reverted to parallel cinemas again.

‘Rockford’ (1999) was Nagesh Kukunoor’s second film in English which revolved around the story about ‘coming of age’ boy who is admitted to a boarding school. Film shows his transformation from a naive, scared boy into a confident teenager after facing some problems in adjusting to new environment. There is a scene in the film in which he develops a soft corner for the only lady teacher (Nandita Das) in the school. His day-dreaming about singing ‘shokhiyon mein ghola jaaye…’ from ‘Prem Pujaari’ (1970) with the lady teacher is hilarious. He then finds her sitting with PT teacher (Nagesh Kukunoor). Now his imagination takes him to Nagesh Kukunoor singing with the teacher. He becomes jealous. Watch the video.

‘Rockford’ (1999) have six songs of which 2 songs are in Hindi. The song ‘yaaron dosti badi hi haseen hai’ sung by KK is from his non-film album which is used in the film. The other Hindi song which I am presenting today is ‘aasmaan ke paar shaayad aur koi aasmaan hoga’ is rendered by Shankar Mahadevan who has also composed the music with his music partners, Ehsaan Noorani and Loy Mendoca.

This song in CD version is of 6-minute duration. However, in the film, this song is used only for 1:35 minutes in the background of the main credit titles at the beginning of the film probably to set the mood of the film. A promotional video featuring Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and the three actors in the role of students in the film, namely, Rohan Dey, Imran Mirza and Kailash Athmanathan was also released. The theme of the music video is a trip to the down memory lane. Shankar Mahadevan, in his interview at the time of the release of this music video had revealed that he had composed this song in Raag Jog in combination with Raag Kedar. What a violin interlude between 2:51 and 3:22 in the audio clip in Carnatic music style!

There was no need for me to search as to who wrote lyrics for this song. A reading of the mukhda of the song with unusual imageries undoubtedly pointed to Gulzar. Yes, the lyrics are by Gulzar saab.

तो काँटों से दोस्ती कर ली॰ ॰ ॰

दस बरस पहले, एक सफर शुरू हुआ – एक सफर जिसका कुछ भी नियत नहीं था, कुछ निश्चित प्रयोजन नहीं था, कुछ आशा भी नहीं थी के ये सिलसिला जाने कब तक चले। बस सिर्फ एक धुन, और एक नग़मा – ले चला जिधर ये दिल निकल पड़े।

और साथ ये भी कह दिया कि मंज़िल कहाँ कहाँ रुकना है ऊपर वाला जाने॰ ॰ ॰

कुछ मालूम नहीं था ये सफर क्या शक्ल हासिल करेगा। क्या कोई हमसफर मिलेगा? मालूम नहीं, ये सोचा भी था के नहीं। लेकिन फिर भी क्या॰॰॰ एक ज़िंदगी का तार पकड़ कर चल दिये। और सोचा यूं कि चलते चलो चलता हुआ साहिल है ज़िंदगी। ये तो अच्छा किया कि दूर की सोची नहीं। अब तीन साल में क्या हो या पाँच सात साल में क्या होगा ऐसी हर फिक्र को धुएँ में उड़ाते हुये, बस एक दिन और एक गीत – इस क्रम पे चलना शुरू किया।

कहते हैं, जब कर्म और विचार में खोट नहीं, तो प्रकृति, दिशाएँ, तत्व, देव – सब कुछ ही साथ हो संबल देते है।  दस साल पहले जो सफर अकेले ही शुरू हुआ था, आज इन दस साल के बाद अब इसकी गिनती करोड़ों में होती है।  क्रम नहीं बदला, नीयत नहीं बदली – जो बदला वो बस यही के लोग साथ आते गये और कारवां बढ़ता गया।

दस साल बाद भी, आज कोई पूछे तो जवाब नहीं बदला – ये हँसता हुआ कारवां ज़िंदगी का न पूछो चला है किधर॰॰॰।

कितने पड़ाव आए और गुज़र गये, कितने ही मील पत्थर रास्ते में मिले और नज़रों से ओझल हुये।  इस सफर में हम कहाँ कहाँ से गुज़र गये – देस भी घूमा, दुनिया भी घूमी; सागर, नदियां, पर्वत, वादियाँ, जंगल और सैहरा, रास्ते और गलियाँ, पनघट और खलिहान, बाज़ार भी, मेले भी और अकेले भी – सब कोने छू लिए। कभी रेल में, तो कभी मोटर कार में, कभी घोड़े कि टापों के संग, तो कभी रिक्शे में। कभी बैल कि गाड़ी में घूमे, तो कभी तांगे के हिचकोले खाये। कशतियों में कभी झीलों का झरोखा, और कभी जहाज़ में समुद्र का दीदार किया। साइकल की सैर भी की, और कभी प्लेन से सारी धरती को देखा। और तो और, क्रेन, ट्रक और ट्रैक्टर को भी नहीं छोड़ा।

कभी हरी दर्शन को तड़पते मन देखे, कभी मदीने की दुआएं मांगी।  कभी बंजारों के गीत सुने, और तो फिर कभी सूफी के कलाम। बुद्ध कि शरण में गये तो कभी येशु के दर पे सर झुकाया। कभी सृष्टि के चित्रकार को ढूँढा, और कभी कर्म गति की शिक्षा सुनी। कभी शुक्राने फरमाए उस खुदा की बंदगी में, तो कभी ज़िंदगी से ऊब कर उसे खूब खरी खोटी भी सुनाई।

कभी किसी नाज़नीं से लहंगे कि फरमाइश सुनी, और कभी प्रेमी कि ज़ुबान से चाँद कि उपमाएँ। कभी बरसात ने दिल लुभाया, तो कभी बात बात में मैंने दिल तुझको दिया। कभी गर्मी की धूप से बचने की सलाह देखी, तो कभी बर्फ की सर्दी को दिल की आंच से कम होते देखा।

गोद में बच्चों को सुलाते हुये माँ कि लोरियाँ सुनी, तो कभी बच्चों से माँ के आँचल कि पुकार। नग़में सुने दोस्ती के और ग़ज़लें सुनी इश्क़ की।  मोहब्बत के जलवों से रोशन जन्नत के नज़ारे किए, तो कभी टूटे दिल के नालों ने हमें भी रुलाया।

कभी दिल मचला और झूम के गा उठा – किसान अपनी फसल देख के, फौजी छुट्टी पर घर जाते हुये, इक जवान दिल इश्क़ का इक़रार पा कर, और तो कभी बस इस कायनात की खूबसूरती पर।

कभी एक चोर की कहानी सुनी, कभी बिक्री वालों से उनकी उम्दा दलीलें सुनी, कभी मेहनतकशों की प्रेरणा भा गई, और तो कभी सड़क पे तमाशों के नज़ारे किए।

हुस्न की जल्वानुमाई देखि, तो कभी हुस्न के एहसान; कभी हुस्न की संगदिली ज़ाहिर हुई, तो कभी सिर्फ शिकवों का ज़िक्र हुआ। फ़लक पे सूरज चाँद और तारों की कहानी सुनी, तो कभी शराब की मस्ती शराबी की जुबानी सुनी।

फूलों से किसी कमसिन के चेहरे को मुक़ाबिल देखा, तो कभी किसी अल्हड़ की लापरवाह चाल से झरनों की उपमा हुई।

कसमें वादे होते देखे साँसों की हद तक, और कभी टूटे वादों के साथ दिल के टुकड़े बिखरते देखे।

कोई जश्न का मौका छूटा नहीं, कोई नाम अछूता रहा नहीं।

कभी धरती और देश के झंडे से बुलंद हुये, तो कभी इंसानी ज़ुल्म से हताश।

कभी शहीदों की कहानियाँ पलटीं, तो कभी भली आत्माओं का दर्शन किया।

सुख की घड़ियाँ, दुख के बादल; हंसी के लम्हे, आँसू की ढलकन; मिलने की खुशी, ना मिलने का ग़म; प्यार का झगड़ा, बेवफाई के ज़ख्म; बारात का बाजा, दिल का राजा; मंदिर का दीपक, खुदा से दुआएं; रिश्तों की संवेदना, और साथ ही वेदना; प्यार का फलसफा, और ज़िंदगी की तालीम।

कभी वो गीत में, कभी नज़्म में, कभी ग़ज़ल में, तो कभी भजन में, कभी ट्विस्ट में तो कभी डिस्को में; कभी क़व्वाली में, तो कभी सहगान में; कभी कविता जैसी लगी, तो कभी कथा जैसी; कभी तुम्हारी छवि दिखी, कभी उसकी; और तो ज़्यादा कहानी अपनी सी लगी।

दस साल। दस साल और पन्द्रह हज़ार उमंगें। रोज़ की नई नवेली। कभी लगता भी है कि पहले सुना था, लेकिन फिर भी लगता है नया सा। कितने सारे भावों की बरसात हुई है, क्या बेशुमार दौलत मिली है – दस साल में। नायाब खजाना है। और सोचो तो, शुरू कहाँ से किया था – “॰॰॰काँटों से दोस्ती कर ली॰॰॰”। मुनासिब ही तो है, ये दौलत काँटों से गुज़र के ही पाते हैं। और तमन्नाएं॰॰॰ उनका तो कहना ही क्या। कुछ मिल जाये, इसकी तो फिक्र कभी थी ही नहीं। बस एक ही बात, एक ही लगन॰॰॰ दिल चाहता है॰॰॰  साथ चलते रहें हम न बीते कभी ये सफर॰॰॰

जी हाँ, दिल चाहता है। जब एक गाना ढूंढ रहा था इस जश्न के लिए, तो मन बहुत घूमने के बाद इस बात पे ठहरा कि एक सफरनामा होना चाहिए, एक गाना जिस में बस सफर हो, कोई मंज़िल न हो। जिसमें बस हमख्यालों का दख़ल हो। जो सब मेरे हमकदम हों, मेरे हमनशीं, मेरे हमज़ुबाँ हों। अपनी यादों और आदतों से वहीं ढूँढता रहा साठ और सत्तर से पहले। इत्तेफाक़ देखिये, मिला तो बखूबी वही जो दिल चाहता है। हाँ ‘दिल चाहता है’ – फिल्म भी वही और नग़मा भी वही। 2001 में जारी हुई ये फिल्म मेंने उन्हीं दिनों में अपने सफरगुज़ारी के दौरान देखी। न जाने क्यों, इस फिल्म से मोहब्बत हो गई। और खास कर के इस गाने से। हल्की सी मस्ती की लहर में हल्का सा ढुलकता सा गाना, सुस्ताता हुआ, आलसी सा गाना, धीरे धीरे बहता जैसे बहार में सुबह कि मीठी सी सबा॰॰॰ लापरवाही में एक प्रतिबिम्बित चिंतन॰॰॰ गाना तो ऐसे मन को भाया के बस।

होता है ना कभी कभी ऐसे ही। कुछ ऐसा कहा जाता है दो लफ्जों में, के और कुछ कहने की कसर बाकी रहती नहीं। जो बात मन की है, वो बस इतनी ही मुकम्मल है, जो ऊपर लिखे मिसरों में ब्याँ हो गई – तमन्ना है ये साथ चलते रहें हम न बीते कभी ये सफर॰॰॰

और कुछ कहना वाजिब नहीं।

इस फिल्म के ज़्यादातर किरदारों को पहली बार देखा था। बहुत सालों बाद एक हिन्दी फिल्म देखी थी शायद। मन को जम गई। 🙂

गीत जावेद अख्तर का लिखा है, संगीत बद्ध किया शंकर-एहसान-लोय कि तिकड़ी ने। गाने वाली आवाज़ शंकर महादेवन की है। स्क्रीन पर ये गाना बैक्ग्राउण्ड में फिल्माया गया। और क्या असरदार फिल्माया गया। गीत ही गीत सुनता है, बाकी सब खामोशी है। एक तुष्टि की, एक पूर्णता की खामोशी है। एक खुशी भरी सुस्ती की खामोशी है॰॰॰ जो दिल चाहता है वो मुझे मिला है॰॰॰ ऐसी खामोशी है

ASAD 10th Anniversary Celebrations – 17

Some achievements boggle your mind. A few years ago it was 10k song and now its 10 years of this blog. Maybe I should say it bloggles my mind! Terrible puns aside, I apologize for this delayed write up. Some incidents over the last weekend, caused me to tragically lose my phone, and after a remote data erase, miraculously find it again. It felt like a Hindi film honestly, one I would have titled ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham’ if there hadn’t already been one by that name.

But today I am spurred into re-action as I seemed to be the only one without a post on this occasion despite being named by the fantastic Atul ji as the youngest contributor (though, isn’t that credit long stolen. I remember a 18 yr old writing about amirbai karnataki?) I decided that ‘देर आए पर दुरुस्त आए’ will be my style and I will write a new article and mark my attendance so to speak.

As I read what Atul ji wrote, I reflected on my own journey, from a watcher of movies to being someone who now stands behind the camera for 16 hrs a day and watches the magic happen. I love watching movies for fun even today and that’s how my first watch of anything still is. But my subsequent watches have me looking at individual shots and camera movements, production design and set decor, costuming and makeup, and all these aspects as they come together with the script and dialogue as an experience. I not only appreciate the executive brilliance but also spend time imagining the sight of some poor production guy whose life turned miserable for the shot to be executed.

Of course there are a lot of people who would like to say that movies made earlier are better than current movies but this honestly not true. Especially the 70s-90s, I grew up in the 90s, but I have to have  my nostalgia glasses glued to my face when I see the movies. Else I will start ranting about their problematic portrayals for a few days. Similarly some movies were technically brilliant then but there is some great original work being done today too. Of course like in a podcast by SnG comedy’s Aadar Malik (nephew to Anu Malik and a comedian in his own right) mentioned, (talking about the lack of technical advancement they recorded under in the 70s), “Yeh log ko itna mehnat aur perfection rakhana padta tha, because ek mistake bhi kitna bhari padta, ek do gaana chura liya toh kya hua aisa lagta hai”

My song today is one I picked not just because of its celebratory mood, nor because it has a varied ensemble that resembles us Atulites, but also to appreciate the hard work behind the whole thing. It’s the first song that’s been filmed, and presented in entirely one take in one camera. Our beloved song from ‘Aradhna’ (1969) had multiple cameras and the song from ‘Main Hoon Na’ had cuts from a separate location. This one had neither and you have to appreciate all the work and practice needed for everyone to be exactly in the place they needed to be at every moment whether in focus or out, their high energy throughout and the absolute conviction in co-ordination they had. There is also a very cute shot of Priyanka doing a dance step like an extra with her face looking away as she moved from one side to another for her next cue. The dance is cute and fun and Priyanka and Ranveer make the cutest siblings.

The song is from ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ (2015) which is directed by Zoya Akhtar. and has a whole list of performers. We have Anil Kapoor, Shefali Shah, Priyanka Chopra, Ranveer Singh as Kabir Mehra, Farhan Akhtar, Rahul Bose, Vikrant Massey, Ridhima Sud, Parmeet Sethi, Dolly Mattdo, Manoj Pahwa, Preeti Mamgain, and a few I couldn’t identify dancing along perfectly in sync. The music is by Shankar ehsaan Loy and the lyrics are by Javed Akhtar. The singers are Shankar Mahadevan, Yashita Sharma, Manish Kumar Tipu, Farhan Akhtar and Sukhwinder Singh.

I must frankly admit that I have kept away from the mainstream cinema, mostly after the seventies faded away, and a new order both in terms of performers, as well as music, came on to the scene.  The time also coincided with the years amounting to almost two and a half decades that I was traveling, and away from India most of the time.  The viewing of current films was random and patchy at the best, and that I never went out of my way to acquire and watch a current film.  Unless it was recommended to me, and that too, by someone whose judgement I would trust.

This blog discusses Bollywood songs of yesteryears. Every song has a brief description, followed by a video link, and complete lyrics of the song.

This is a labour of love, where “new” songs are added every day, and that has been the case for over FIFTEEN years. This blog has over 18300 song posts by now.
