‘Parineeta’ (2005) was produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and was directed by debutant Pradeep Sarkar. The star cast included Saif Ali Khan and the debutant Vidya Balan in the lead role with Sanjay Dutt, Dia Mirza, Raima Sen, Sabyasachi Chakraborty, Achyut Potdar, Surinder Kaur, Supriya Shukla, Rajesh Sharma etc. Rekha made a cameo appearance in the film.

The story of ‘Parineeta’ (2005) is based on Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s famous Bengali novella of the same name. The first Hindi film based on this novella was made by Bimal Roy in 1953 with the same title. I will skip discussing the story of the film in this article as Peevesie’s Mom has already covered in this post. I would only add here that the debutant director, Pradeep Sarkar and the debutant lead actress, Vidya Balan gave the impression in the film that they were the seasoned artists. With this film, Saif Ali Khan proved that he could do challenging roles as well. Shantanu Moitra proved with his music direction in the film that he can compose songs like R D Burman in ‘1942 – A Love Story’ (1994).

There are 7 songs in the film of which 3 songs have already been covered on the Blog. I am presenting the 4th song which is my most favourite in the film. The song I am referring to is ‘piyu bole piya bole jiya dole jaanu na’. The song is rendered by Sonu Nigam, Shreya Ghoshal and Chorus on the words of Swanand Kirkire which is set to music by Shantanu Moitra. The song under discussion has impressed me so much that I have watched this song umpteen times. It turns out that minute details of the song have willy-nilly got engraved in my mind.

The background as well as situation of the song in the film is that Saif Ali Khan (Shekhar) who has more interest in Rabindra Sangeet and Elvis Presley than in his father’s business is struggling to compose a tune for a song on the piano. He calls Vidya Balan (Lalita) who is his next-door neighbour and a childhood friend to help him out.

Before the start of the main song, Saif Ali Khan plays piano for a tune and he starts humming the tune with vocables like ‘la la la la’ and ‘ hey ae ae’. Shreya Ghoshal singing for Vidya Balan helps Saif Ali Khan by joining him with his vocables. He encourages her by telling ‘not bad’ which is his catchphrase in the film. The beauty of the song is that from the start of the main song, Shreya Ghoshal sings with the accomplishment of the prominent tabla beats. And this remains throughout the singing part of the song. On a couple of occasions, solo flute is played within the antaras which is pleasing to the ears. The orchestration has been kept soft in the background throughout the song in keeping with the period of the story.

One unique feature of the song is the use of choir singing in the two interludes of the song. I think, there is some symbolism which the music director has tried to convey. The choir singing is symbolic of spirituality and union with the God. In this song, there is an inherent feeling of mutual love and the desire for the union in the minds of Shekhar and Lalita. The two antaras of the song give that indication of relationship, that is between a river and the ocean and between the rain-bearing clouds and the thirsty land. The choir singing in the interludes adds luster to the song.

The whole song is a musical conversation between Shekhar and Lalita. In my view, this song is a masterpiece because everything is perfect in this song – the lyrics, the music, the rendition, the picturisation and the performances of the actors involved in the song. I do not recall as to who said that poetry (lyrics) is the soul of a song. In this song, Shantanu Moitra has nicely ‘dressed up’ the song with the melody and rhythm. Sonu Nigam, Shreya Ghoshal and the chorus singers have provided the perfect ‘ornaments’ to the song. For me, the song under discussion has, in terms of gymnastic events, the score of perfect 10.

Blog Day :

5394 Post No. : 17699

It really has been a while– I do not follow the current Hindi films scene on a regular basis. I think this started in mid 1980s. One factor was that my life became quite mobile as far as my work situation was concerned. Moving to Bombay (now Mumbai) in 1987, then on to US in 1988, back in Delhi 1996, change of workplace two times, and then back again in the US in 2000. Back in Delhi 2009/10, and then more ongoing travel albeit shorter and less frequent.

There are two more factors that I can think of. My deep interest in Hindi films and film music has been with me since I was a student of 3rd/4th grade school. A big chunk of my memory is full of many items starting from that period. However, as we get on to 1980s, and beyond the mid 1980s, the flavors of music in films were changing. For good or bad, I do not make this judgment, but it became different from the likeable and favorite stock stored in me. And so the interest started to wane somewhat. 1980s was also a period of significant transition and churn in terms of the artists and persona who had molded my interest and my love for this art form. Many left us, and many others were sidelined, for reasons I once again do not want to make a judgment on. Bottom line was that the music that was being created in the industry was holding less and less attraction and interest for me.

No, this is not a blanket dismissal of everything that has happened in the industry since mid 1980s. Just that there were progressively lesser artifacts that would catch my attention, and get added to my list of favorites in the memory stores.

Another factor that started becoming more prominent in life relates to the advent of the internet in the 1990s. Being in the IT industry, we were always at the forefront of the changes that were being brought in technology. Email appeared, messaging appeared, and network connectivity in some limited manner became available. Working in IT companies, I was always connected to whatever was the extent of the online net availability. Public networks and home connectivity was still a few years ahead, but from the offices, we had the luxury of being able to access whatever online resources were available then.

I remember I was on an assignment in San Dimas, close to LA in California. While browsing the internet from my office I stumbled upon a web site that had been put up by a gentleman named Amarjeet Singh Anand, who lived in San Fernando, further south from where I was. I discovered a gold mine – songs that were heard on radio in the 60s and 70s, and then never heard of again. The recordings were very low bit rate – the networks could not support high volumes. But I latched on to this website, and my entire weekends were spent in office, dedicated to downloading everything I could. The websites were not restricted, the concept and ability to download was not well known, and the office networks also did not have any controls as yet. Once having figured out the download capability, it was a trip into a wonderland of music of the years gone by, the music that was burnt onto the hard drives in my memory.

Then started this new phase of my passion for this music. Now the trip became to collect Hindi film songs in digital form. As time progressed, more and more online resources were discovered. Also one started getting introduced to more people who were doing such collections – the network grew and so did the collections by exchange and sharing.

And so, the interest in the current Hindi cinema and its music never really took any roots inside. The search still continues. This activity brought me in contact with many more like minded collectors, archivists and film history buffs. Geet Kosh came into life and a lot changed after that. And then Atul ji stepped into my life through Atul-Song-A-Day. And of course, the things in life were never the same again.

So in the current times, viewing of films and listening to music is more as per recommendations from friends and family members. I continue to read enough news to keep abreast of the current happenings in Hindi cinema, but only rarely do I get motivated to see any films of the new crop.

But that does not mean that my contact with current cinema is zero. As I said, based on recommendations I do keep in touch. The film ‘Dil Chaahta Hai’ (2001) – I had heard good things about this film. A maiden production effort by Farhan Akhtar ; a story revolving around the lives of three very close friends, and their fortunes in personal relationships.

I was based in San Jose at that time. I think I got to see this film probably in 2003 or 2004. A junior Indian colleague at work coaxed me to see this film. He expressed surprise that I had not seen this film. He promptly made a DVD disc for me, to view at leisure.

In many ways, it was a first introduction to many an actor from the newer generation. It was the first time to find out that Farhan Akhtar is the son of Javed Akhtar (from his earlier marriage with Honey Irani). Also the first time to be introduced to the lyrics from the pen of Javed Akhtar. Also to know that the tradition of duo and trio music directors in Hindi cinema is still alive with Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. And to be introduced to the new crop of actors – Aamir, Priety, Saif, Akshay (Khanna), Sonali et al. And to find out to my dismay that my sweet little Bobby, the heartthrob of my college days, had actually aged.

The film is about love, about different flavors of it. That different people view it differently, treat it differently, have different interpretations and expectations. The fundamental message being that each person has a different opinion of love, and it is a great fortune to meet someone who has the similar view in life. Yes, truly a great fortune. Having been fed on primarily happy ending fairy tales that I had been viewing since childhood, the mindset of the child within was that there is always a smooth ride and a happy outcome of a love story. No, not that I have not viewed films at variance with this view, but still. After a gap of having kept distance from Hindi films, ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ was a wonderful refresher course in looking at filmy love stories once again.

I liked the film at first viewing itself. And also the music and songs. A learning for me that yes, music can be refreshing coming from artists whose names I had never heard before, and names that did not inspire any confidence. And yet, this film and its music entered my list of favorites. And that too, post 2000.

Four songs of this film are already on the blog. I present today a lilting exchange between the girl-boy pair in their effort to find the perfect match in life. There is a certain old world charm and a slowly sinking in surrealism in the presentation of this song. Sameer (role played by Saif Ali Khan) and Pooja (role played by Sonali Kulkarni) are friends who go to see a film. The magic happens in the cinema hall, and we come face to face with another “dream of wide awake eyes” experience. Immersed in the music, both Sameer and Pooja fancy themselves to be the protagonists on the screen. The love song being played is “dreamed” of as being enacted by them. There is disbelief at first, which is then followed by a disarming acceptance of a shared experience that brings to surface realizations that they have probably been nurturing inside.

And the surrealism comes to a sharp pitch at the end of the song sequence, when the entire audience inside the hall joins the love birds in chorus, acknowledging the presence of an “Aha” moment amidst them. A cute presentation. The song picturization, the dress up, the dance steps all are an enlivening throwback on the earlier decades of Hindi cinema.

This song once again further emboldens the firm belief that all it takes to make love and consent appear between the supposed love birds is three minutes (in this case five), i.e. the duration of a song. All that is in doubt is set right, all that is hidden beneath surprised appearances surfaces, the smiles come on, and the hand-in-hand arms entwined happy outcome is signaled at the end of the three minutes. Well, somethings will probably never change. And thankfully so. 😀

Getting close to time out and I must pause to make this post online. The century marker trumpet is just waiting behind me to tootle the announcement of the 177th century milestone. So without much further ado, take a listen to this song and then on to the milestone.

Happy listening.

zara dekho yahan wahan

chalo dhoondhte hain hum tum kahin
wo pari wo hoor wo naazneen
jise dekho to kaho tum wahi
arey ye to hai yahaan

jaane kyon
khayaal aaya mujhe
ke wo ladki kahin tum to nahin..een

Hullo Atudom

“Main Khiladi Tu Anari” (1994) was a normal masala- action- emotion- comedy filled movie. It was directed by Sameer Malkan, produced by Champak Jain for Venus Records and Tapes. Dialogues were by Kadar Khan, story by Sachin Bhowmick, lyricists were Anwar Sagar, Maya Govind, Rahat Indori, Rani Malik, Zameer Kazmi and Hasrat Jaipuri. Anu Malik was the music director. It had Shilpa Shetty (in a double role) with Akshay Kumar, Saif Ali Khan, Raageshwari, Shakti Kapoor, Beena, Mukesh Khanna, Shiva, Johnny Lever, and Kadar Khan in the cast. The movie was largely borrowed from the 1991 Hollywood movie ‘The Hard Way’ and some reviews of MKTA said (and I quote) ‘it was a notch above the original because of the presence of one of India’s biggest action stars, martial artist Akshay Kumar’; comparing his martial arts skills to Jean-Claude Van Damme and also praising his stunt work, and concluding that it “is a fun action-comedy” film. It was the second release in 1994 of the Akshay Kumar- Saif Ali Khan duo, the other one being ‘Yeh Dillagi’. It was also Akshay Kumar’s fourth success for 1994 others being ‘Mohra’, ‘Suhaag’ and ‘Elaan’ (all of them being multi-hero movies).

The story involves two brothers -Mukesh Khanna and Akshay Kumar; imaginatively called Arjun and Karan- who are cops. They have a sister – Raageshwari (Shivangi)- who is an ardent, crazy fan of movie star Deepak Kumar (Saif Ali Khan) Then there is the drug dealer- gangster Goli (Shakti Kapoor) whose mistress is the cabaret singer Mona (another unique name 🙂 ). Mona is pumped off by Goli’s henchman (Shiva) when Goli comes to know that she is going to testify against him, and in protecting Mona Inspector Arjun also is killed. Now Karan has only one objective- to book Goli and avenge his brother’s killing. He seeks the help of Basanti -a street dancer who is the replica of Mona (Shilpa Shetty). For this, he has Deepak Kumar masquerading as someone from China Town and transporting Basanti to Goli’s gang with the age-old explanation of Amnesia after falling on the rocks and injury to head etc. Then many things occur in the course of the movie reaching its climax. In between all this, Deepak Kumar falls in love with his fan and Karan’s sister Shivangi- after all she also needs to sing a song no?

For today’s post we are going to have the song that Deepak Kumar and Shivangi sing to proclaim their love; in the voices of Kumar Sanu and Alka Yagnik. This song is one that I have always liked. Only recently I discovered that this one is from the pen of Hasrat Jaipuri: writer of the classics ‘ichak dana bichak dana’; ‘bhanwre ki gunjan hai mera dil’; ‘budtameez kaho ya kaho jaanwar’; ‘yaad kiya dil ne kahan ho tum’; ‘nain so nain naahi milao’; ‘Baat baat mein rootho na’— oh so many songs of his which I have been hearing, listening, humming, singing all along.

This lyricist who was a poet in Urdu and Hindi was a Filmfare award winner for ‘baharo phool barsaao mera mehboob aaya hai’ and ‘Zindagi ek safar hai suhana’ (my personal all time favorite and motto of life). Cannot resist mentioning the lines in ‘Zindagi ek safar hai suhana’: ‘hanste gaate jahaan se guzar, duniya ki tu parwaah na kar, muskuraate huye din bitaana, yahaan kal kyaa ho kisne jaana’.

Hasrat Jaipuri was born in Jaipur as Iqbal Hussain in 1922 (would this be his centenary year?) His education till middle school was in English medium and there after his maternal grandfather tutored him in Persian and Urdu. He began writing verses in his youth around the time when he fell in love with a neighbourhood girl named Radha. This has been the most widely talked-about anecdote in the entertainment industry and how this poem was used by Raj Kapoor in his 1964 film ‘Sangam’ as ‘yeh mera prem patra padhkar’.

As we can see from the above sample, from his long association with films (1949- 2004), it was a mixed-bag of songs, written by Hasrat Jaipuri, that are ever popular. Today, it is 23 years since his passing and we are remembering him with this song from MKTA which is making its debut.

Atul Song-A-Day 15K Song Milestone Celebrations – 3
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Founders of Infosys (who started their venture reportedly on a Rs 10K seed capital) may not have imagined where their efforts will lead to, one day. Apple company, which started their journey from a garage, may not have guessed how big they will grow one day.  Atul Ji when he single-handedly started this blog (with moral encouragement from friends like Raja Ji – as I understand & others who showed thumbs up at that time) may not have had an idea how far the journey will progress.

But here we – Atulites – are, looking at 15000 posts!!!!. No mean feat in the era of information & social media explosion. No success is without a reason. I would say that sheer commitment, passion, dedication of Atul Ji,  Sudhir ji, Arun Ji, Sadanand Ji and all the other contributors & innumerable visitors to the blog have helped to make it to where we are today. Acha lagata hai na?

This post utilises three punch words, all prompted by today’s song.  They are : ‘achha lagata hai’, ‘seedhe point pe aao na’  & ‘short me batalao na’.

I have covered ‘achha lagata hai’ in first para. I will now ‘come to the point’ in this Para  🙂 . Today’s song is from film ‘Aarakshan’ (2011). After ‘permission’ from seniors, to write on recent songs, I have chosen this one. This film makes its debut in ASAD, with this post.

The film is by Prakash Jha on the topic of reservation. I have seen this movie. It was not at all hard hitting as I expected. But I loved the music by Shankar Ehsaan Loy. The singers are Mohit Chauhan & Shreya Ghoshal. Lyrics are by Prasoon Joshi. I took to this song from the word Go. Fresh tune, feel young lyrics, joyously sung, lovingly enacted by Saif & Deepika, exciting orchestration are what appealed to me. ‘sun ke achha laga‘. I hope aap ko bhi achha lagega . I feel young all over again listening to this song 🙂 .

Today’s generation loves to keep it short – no patience for details/clarity, eh?  ‘LOL’, ‘ASAP’ ‘ILU’ and such short forms are the flavour of the youngsters. Hence, as for the last punch word ‘short me batalao na’, I end this post. 🙂

Song – Achha Lagta Hai (Aarakshan) (2011) Singer – Mohit Chauhan, Shreya Ghoshal, Lyrics – Prasoon Joshi, MD – Shankar Ehsaan Loy
Chorus

Lyrics (Based on Audio Version)

jhatak kar zulf jab tum
tauliye se baarishein azaad karti ho
achha lagta hai
hila kar honth jab bhi
haule haule guftagu ko saaz karti ho
achha lagta hai

oo oo oo
khushboo se behlaao na
seedhe point pe aao na
aaankh me aankhein daal ke keh do
khwaabon mein tehlaayo na
zara short mein
batlao na
seedhe point pe
aao na
seedhe point pe aao na. . .

la la laa laa
la la lal laa laa
la la laa laa
la la lal laa laa

alag ehsaas hota hai. . .
tumhaare paas hone ka
sarakti sarsarahat ki nadi mein reshmi lamhe
bheegone ka

o ho ho
zara sa mod kar gardan
jab apni hi adaa pe naaz karti ko
achha lagta hai

oo oo oo
lafzon se behlaao na
jhoothi moothi behkaao na
haathon ko haathon mein le ke
wo teen shabd tapkaao na
zara short mein
batlaao na
seedhe point pe
aao na
haan seedhe point pe aao na. . .

wo tere dhyaan ki khushboo
main sar tak odh leta hoon
bhatakti saans ko
teri gali mein gungunaane
chhod deta hoon

ho ho ho
tum apni khidkiyon ko khol kar
jab bhi naye aaghaaz karti ho
achha lagta hai

oo oo oo
gali gali gali gali gali
gali bhatkaao na
ghadi ghadi uljhaao na
senti ho
main jaan gai hoon
action bhi dikhlaao na
zara short mein
batlaao na
seedhe point pe
aao na

ASAD 10th Anniversary Celebrations – 19
———————————————————————

[Author’s Note: Apologies due on many counts, including the sudden and surprising change in the presentation language above. The writing started and then I just couldn’t stop the flow. And so I let it flow. In case there are requests, I can add the English translation also. Regarding the gap in celebration sequence, that story is coming up tomorrow. 🙂 ]

dil chaahta hai

dil chaahta hai

dil chaahta hai
kabhi na beeten
chamkeele din
dil chaahta hai
hum na rahen kabhi yaaron ke bin
din din bhar hon

jhoomen shaamen
gaayen raaten
masti mein rahe dooba dooba hamesha samaa
hum ko raahon mein yun hi milti rahen khushiyaan
dil chaahta hai
kabhi na beeten
chamkeele din
dil chaahta hai
hum na rahen kabhi yaaron ke bin

jagmagaate hain
jhilmilaate hain apne raaste
ye khushi rahe
roshni rahe
apne waaste
jagmagaate hain

ye khushi rahe
roshni rahe
apne waaste

There have been lots of articles (in this blog and elsewhere) about the festival of Deepaawali. They mostly deal with the history of the festival, stories associated with it, how it is celebrated etc.

Hullo to all in Atuldom

On this blog, Atul has a page for birthdays of various Hindi film artistes. He has meticulously kept track of these dates and makes it a point, as much as possible, to post a song honouring the artiste on the concerned date. That is like a doctor treating his patients.

Chaandni Raaten – Song No. 9
——————————-

This song is simply my most favourite ‘chaand’ song of the 21st century. The last two decades had a few such music scores in Hindi films, ‘ Khaamoshi ‘ and ‘Parineeta’ are among them which made the decades bearable musically. Favourite ‘chaand’ song from the 90’s is here. Melody in film songs was still trying to keep its head above the general cacophony which passed for music and entertainment.

‘Parineeta’ (2005) is one of the aesthetically better movies of the last decade. I had seen this movie on cable TV, but had liked the movie and songs a lot. The movie, cinematography and the understated treatment of the adapted story from Saratchandra Chatterjee’s classic literary piece, were impressive. It is a glamorously packaged product with the subtle nuances. It is directed by Pradeep Sarkar and had Saif Ali Khan and Vidya Balan playing the lead roles, with supporting cast of Sanjay Dutt, Dia Mirza, Raima Sen etc. Its crisp editing is also a feature that I had noted back than, while watching the film.

Today (23 september) is the birthday of Kedar Nath Bahttacharya, who is known to music lovers as Kumar Sanu. Kumar Sanu made his debut as a playback singer in Hindi movies in 1987 with “Aandhiyaan” (1987). He shot to fame with the songs of “Aashiqui” (1990) which became a rage with music lovers.
