And Soviet Union style socialism was considered the way to progress. Many movies were made on the theme of nation building in those days. and these movies naturally had songs to inspire people.

When India became independent in 1947, the nationalistic fervour among the newly independant Indians was naturally at its peak. People wanted to forge their own identity and one of the battle cries that was frequently heard those days was to give up wearing Western clothings and wear native clothings. Dressing up western style, applying make up etc was regarded as western and was mocked.

The technology of recording Hindi movie songs in the earlier decades was not very advanced. It was not possible to use the same recording for both the movie as well as the record companies, so the same song was recorded twice- once for the movie sound track, and another time for the record company.

It is popularly belived that the use of Hinglish words (Hindi and English words combined) began in Hindi movies only in 1980s and it met with the disapproval of purists. But in reality, such Hinglish songs have been there from 1940s itself. Who can forget the evergreen song Aana meri jaan meri jaan sunday ke sunday from “Shehnaayi” (1947).

There are some music directors who have composed throusands of songs and discussing most of their songs will take ages. But there are some music directors who have composed much less number of songs and it should be possible for me to post most of their compositions if I put my mind to it.

The golden era of Hindi movie music began in late 1940s and lasted till late 1970s. There are very few music directors who were around when the golden era began and who lasted almost the entire period of this golden era. The one music director who was around for almost the entire duration and whose was S D Burman.
