Apne haath sajaa jaa baalam
Pag paijhaniya uljha gayi mori
Apne haath lagaa jaa baalam
The above is the original bandish written by saint-poet Chandrasakhi and composed in Raag Bihag.

Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 3
———————————————————
The first time I heard the name of the film ‘Prarthana’ (1943) was sometime in 2012 when I wrote a short write-up on Jahanara Kajjan, singer-actor of 30s and 40s, for the Blog with her song tumre darshan ka nainaa taras gaye re in Raag Gaud. Since then, the only additional information I could get about this film was that it was a social genre film. The film’s VCD/DVD is not available.

This article is the 11400th song post in the blog.
This blog has in the past seen centuries being posted in 15-16 days which was Sehwag like scoring rate so to say. But the century that we achieve today with this song has come at a Chris Tavare like strike rate. 🙂

What an enchanting and rare piece of music this one is. Coming from the 1935 film ‘Raaj Mukut’, this song is part of the history that is eight decades old now. Of the fourteen songs that are listed for this film in the Geet Kosh, only this one is so far traceable and available.

Basics of Music- Part III (Raag and Thhaat)
——————————————–
In part I, we introduced swars and mentioned that combination of swars constitutes melody. In part II, we introduced the concept of Rhythm (taal) and mentioned that it is the combination of melody and rhythm that makes music what it is today.
Each of the two parts were quite heavy duty stuff for people not exposed to such stuff earlier. I got some comments on part I, but hardly any for the second part, which may mean that these concepts may have been going above the heads of readers.
