At the outset let me post my usual disclaimer: I am no encyclopaedia as regards the birth and death anniversaries of my favourite Bollywood actors, actresses, singers, music directors, lyricists, choreographers etc. I am assisted in keeping track of the dates by the list on our blog and the good old trust-worthy Vividh Bharati services of All India Radio. As soon as he discovers that I have uploaded a new post, Arvinder ji (I should say, Dear Arvinder ji) is immediately on my case – “where are the songs that I have requested”. And so it transpires this time also. As soon as he became aware of my previous post (of Tuesday early morning), I have been getting calls and messages of all types reminding me of his list of requests for songs that are very dear, but are not easily available at this time. We had a small get together of our group yesterday afternoon. Arvinder ji was also present. And I don’t need to add much more to say how he urged me to post the songs he has requested.

Here is a typical Kishore Kumar song. Combining with RD Burman he gives us a bhajan, qawwali and Hindustani classical all at one shot. Such a song has entertainment value and Kishore Kumar doesn’t disappoint (has he ever?) And there are very few Bollywood actors who can carry it off with equal gusto.

In my family and friend circles, there are some musically inclined persons who are fond of Hindi film songs. Among them, I can find fans of Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi, Mukesh, Kishore Kumar, Talat Mehmood etc as playback singers. But I have yet to come across within my same circles anyone who claims to be a fan of Mahendra Kapoor.
