Today’s song is from the film Taqdeer-1943.

This was Mehboob Khan’s second film from his own studio-Mehboob productions. His first film was Najma-1943 (his own daughter’s name was Najma). That film was woven around a woman’s life. Similarly, his second film also was about a young girl. The girl was Nargis- making her Debut as an adult heroine (14 years) opposite the hero Motilal (age 33 years). The story was about lost children in Kumbh Mela and then found by unrelated people who bring them up, having lost their own. Sounds like a precursor to a Man Mohan Desai’s film ? Maybe it gave him an idea !

Today’s song is from a controversial film, released at the end of the 1940’s decade – Hanste Aansoo-1950.

First of all the title itself seems to contain contrasting emotions. One smiles when he is happy and one has tears when he is hurt or sad. I feel we get tears when we are sad or hurt of course, but even when a person is too happy he gets tears in his eyes. For example, when a child is away for many years, the mother feels sad and weeps in his memory. But when he comes back after many years and hugs his mother, she gets tears at that time also, with happiness !

Today’s song is from the film Gumashta-1951.

Gumashta is an Urdu word. Being from and having grown up in Hyderabad, I know the meaning of this word, from my childhood. In those days the family Doctors did not charge the patients every time they visited him. Instead, he used to note his charges in a diary, where a separate page was reserved for that patient. At the end of every month, the total was done and a man was sent by the doctor to the patient’s house to collect the amount. That man was called ” Gumashta” or a Bill Collector.

Today’s song is from the first film of Nargis as a Hindi film heroine – Taqdeer-1943.

The film was made by Mehboob Khan for his banner, Mehboob productions, Bombay.

In the history of Hindi Cinema, Mehboob Khan’s name would be written prominently as one of the great directors, who rose from scratch to a height attained by few other directors. Mehboob Khan directed 8 films for Sagar, 3 films for National and 11 films for Mehboob productions.

Today’s song is from a so-called ” हास्य प्रधान ” (Humorous) film Haa Haa Hee Hee Hoo Hoo -1955.

I have seen this film and by any standards it is not a humorous film. The story is very weak. Except for the lead pair the other actors are not so well known. Both the film’s director and the Music Director were poor images of their glorious past. The songs are not worth even a one time hearing. The only redeeming feature of this film I found was , I could see 2 old time actors in it, namely Sulochana aka Ruby Meyers and H.Prakash. I saw Ruby after she was seen in her third Anarkali film-1953. I had thought that she had retired, but she was there in this film !
