THE VIBRANT 40S (Episode No. 12)
————————————-
Initially, when the Talkie films started, most of the actors and actresses of the silent era, who could speak Hindi/Urdu and sing a little got entry into these films. Soon many Anglo-Indian girls and actors like master Vithal, who could not speak Hindi properly, leave aside singing, had to be excluded from Talkie films.(Master Vithal who was selected as the Hero for India’s First Talkie film,”Aalam Ara”-1931, based on his looks,Physique and his silent film credentials-over the capable Mehboob Khan- gave such pathetic performance in his Hindi/Urdu dialogues that he had to be shown as Unconcious almost throughout the film to hide his poor diction of Hindi/Urdu dialogues.)

How can I forget the iconic song “jahan daal daal par sone ki chidiyan karti hai basera” which used to be played on our Independent Day and the Republic Day. A few months back, I came to know that there was another film ‘Sikandar’ with the same story line which was released in 1941. The film was produced under the banner of Minerva Movietone owned by Sohrab Modi and directed by him. The star cast included Prithviraj Kapoor ( Sikandar), Sohrab Modi ( King Porus), Vanmala (Ruksana), Sheela, Meena Shorey ( Prarthhna, Kign Ambi’s sister), K N Singh ( King Ambi of Taxila) etc.

“Pukaar” (1939) made by Sohrab Modi is regarded as a landmark movie in the history of Hindi movies. I as a pre teen kid was never impreessed by such talk of old movies being landmak movies. I never watched this movie nor bothered to listen to its songs. And now, this movie as well as its songs have become too rare to find.
