Today’s song is from a very old -88year old – film, His Highness-1937.

I somehow like to write about old films. Names of old actors, directors and the composers bring many memories. Listening to songs from old films gives you an idea how cine music evolved and reached today’s state. In the beginning, the films were totally dependent on stage drama stories, Folklore and Mythology. Afterwards, they started using social themes, comedy and stunts. There was no problem with the stories. For talkie films in the early era, there were 3 sources of film stories…..
1. from Ramayan, Mahabharat, Puranas and other religious stories, social evils and family dramas
2. Using and copying themes from foreign and English films
and
3. Remakes of popular Silent films. About 30 to 40 % silent films were remade into Talkie films.

Today’s song is from a very popular but very old -86 year old, to be exact – film Kangan-1939.

Kangan-1939 was a film noteworthy for many reasons. Firstly, it was the beginning of 3 most successful films of Leela Chitnis and Ashok Kumar in those times. The other two films were Bandhan and Jhoola. Historically, this pair was one of the most successful and popular romantic pairs in the Hindi cinema history.

Secondly, this was the first film for Leela Chitnis with Bombay Talkies. Thirdly, this was the film, during the shooting of which, its director and cinematographer along with other German technicians were arrested by the British Government and sent to a Concentration Camp near Igatpuri (between Bombay and Nashik).

Today’s song is from an obscure and less known film Mordhwaj-1952.

This was a Mythological film about a less known incident which happened during the Ashwamedh Yadnya by Pandavas, after they won the Kurukshetra war against the Kauravas, with the help of Shri Krishna.

#the Decade of Fifties – 1951 – 1960 #
—————————————————————

Today on 24th December 2024 we are celebrating the birth centenary of the legendary singer Mohd Rafi. He was born on 24th December 1924. On this occasion we are presenting songs sung by Mohd Rafi. Initially I was looking for Rafi songs remaining to be posted from the decade of forties i.e. 1941-1950 and I decided that later on I will move simultaneously 50s to 80s. I even had couple of movie-titles noted for this purpose. However it so happened that the songs I presented so far are the songs from movies where Rafi Saab had sung only one song or a movie like ‘Alakh Niranjan’ which have more than one Rafi song, but none of these was posted still on the blog. As the day progressed we saw Rafi songs from the decade of ‘sixties’ and ‘seventies’ have already come up. So I am not sure if I am going to take songs from the 60s, 70s or 80s now.

Hullo Atuldom

Jackie Shroff made his debut as a leading man in 1983 through the Subhash Ghai directed “Hero”. Following its success he was signed up for ‘Teri Meherbaniyan’, ‘Yudh’, ‘Karma’, ‘Shiva ka Insaaf ‘ etc. Of these, ‘Shiva Ka Insaaf’ that released in 1985 was advertised as India’s first 3-D movie. Additionally, it had the hero donning a cape ‘a la Zorro’. As far as story was concerned (as I can recall) it was as follows:-

Today’s song is a song sung by Madhubala Jhaveri, for the film Jeevan Sathi-1957.

This film had a criss-cross and a jumble of lovers. The imagination of the story writer was stretched to the maximum to get the criss-crossed loving pairs together by the end of the film. It was a story unique by itself and I guess such a thing would never happen in real life. The film was produced by Dhanwant Shah under his own banner- D.S.Films, Bombay. It was directed by R.S.Tara and the music was by Bulo C Rani with the assistant C.Arjun- a composer in the making.

wo tere pyaar ka gham, ek bahaana thhaa sanam
apni kismat hi kuchh aisi thhi ke dil toot gaya

While recording this song for ‘My Love’ (1970), Mukesh had told Daan Singh that people will remember this song for long after they are no more in this world. Mukesh’s prophecy has become true.

Today’s song is from the film ‘Teen Bhai’ (1955).

In every person’s life there are happy and memorable events which he enjoys remembering till his last day. Like others, I too have few such memorable events in my life. Few events are – like the day when I saw my name in newspapers when I came into the XII std. Merit List, the day I married the girl of my choice and the day I rose from the post of a Medical Representative to take over as a Director on the Board of a couple of Pharma Companies, etc.
