Rajesh Khanna – The Phenomenon – 6
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
Today 18th July is the Remembrance Day of Rajesh Khanna. He passed away on 18th July 2012. As a tribute to him here is song from the 1980 movie ‘Thodi Si Bewafaai’.
My last post in this series ‘Rajesh Khanna-The Phenomenon’ came almost one and half year back on his birth anniversary. In that post I had discussed a song from the 1979 movie ‘Amardeep’ and for today’s post we move to Rajesh Khanna movies in 1980.
The seventies ended on a positive note for Rajesh Khanna with ‘Amardeep’ being a hit at the box office. But, then 1980 was more like ‘turning around’ year for him on a positive note. And few of his movies performed well at the box office though only one of them viz. ‘Thodi Si Bewafaai’ became a ‘hit’ movie.

Today, the 18th of July, is the death anniversary of one of the Hindi film industry’s biggest superstars. Probably one of its most controversial too. And certainly one of its most polarizing.
No prizes for guessing who I’m talking about. Of course, I’m talking about the one-time heartthrob of millions of women, Rajesh Khanna.
It’s been 8 years now since that day in 2012. I still remember the morning I got to hear the news – I was stunned. I knew he was ailing, but even so I never expected it would be so soon.

Today (14 July 2020) is the 101st birth anniversary of Sagat Singh (14 july 1919- 26 September 2001). He had nothing to do with HFM, but I am discussing him today. why ? Because I think that he deserves to be known to all of us. His name should occupy a pride of place among the great sons of India.

The date today is 7 july 2020. From the HFM point of view, birth anniversaries of Anil Biswas (born 1914) and Saraswati Kumar Deepak (born 1918) falls today. We have already honoured the two artists in two articles earlier today.
Some other important non HFM related things also happened on this day. It was on this day in 1928 that sliced bread was forst sold by Chillicothe Baking Company of Chillicothe, Missouri, USA. Their product, “Kleen Maid Sliced Bread was advertised as “the greatest forward step in the baking industry since bread was wrapped. This gave rise to the popular idiom “greatest thing since sliced bread”. 🙂

Today’s song is a special song from the film Mirza Sahibaan-1957. It is special because it is almost a 9 minute song – 8 minutes and 36 seconds, to be exact. There is one more-Punjabi- song in this film, which is about 6m 30s long. Today’s song is written by Verma Malik and the music is composed by Sardul Kwatra- one of the 3 Sikh composers in Hindi films during that period ( the other two were G S Kohli and S Mohinder). His younger brother Bhagwant Kwatra was his assistant here.
Sardul Singh Kwatra was one of the very few Sikh Music Directors Hindi Films had. He was born in Lahore in 1928. He was educated and trained in classical music at Lahore. His teacher in music was Sardar Awatar Singh, who was quite famous in Lahore. Later Sardul singh joined Hansraj Behl as his assistant.

Hullo Atuldom
Today we are wishing the Apple of every cricket-loving-Indian’s eye A VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY. This pyaara sa bachcha of India turns 47.
He is the inspiration to many in the current Indian cricket squad but he himself was inspired by the likes of Sunny Gavaskar, Kapil Dev etc. He is one lucky guy to have been able to share the dressing room with his idols. He made his debut in the cricketing world as a lad of 16 years and 205 days in Test cricket and was a month older when he got his place in the Indian One-day team. I am not going to state that he is the highest run scorer of all time in international cricket nor am I going to mention that he is the only player to have scored 100 international centuries. I am not a statistician but I used to admire his style of playing. I had a silly feeling that I should be away from the TV whenever he was reaching a milestone like 50 or 100. I remember seeing an India Australia one-day match at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai and we were rooting for his milestone and he got out 4 or 5 runs short of it; my son and brother-in-law who were with me decided to walk out. That is the kind of sentiments he generated in cricket-lovers.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No. 21
—————————————————————————
Today’s song is from the movie “Kavi-1954”. I have neither watched the movie nor I am aware of many of its songs. However, when I noticed this movie is due for ‘Blog ten-year challenge’ of 17.04.2020, I checked its pending songs. I came across a duet sung by Rafi Saab and Talat Mehmood which I found interesting since I was not aware of this song. Also, the music of this movie is composed by C. Ramchandra ji one of my favorite music directors which is another reason why I am sharing this song here today.
Three songs were represented on the blog on 17.04.2010 including a song from this movie ‘Kavi-1954’;
| Song | Movie title-Year | Remarks |
|---|---|---|
| Bolo he zameen bolo aasmaan | Chakradhaari-1954 | All songs covered |
| Main pee ke nahin aaya | Kavi-1954 | |
| Nuktaa cheen hai gham e dil | Mirza Ghalib-1954 | All songs covered |
“Kavi-1954” had total ten songs in it, all written by Rajinder Krishan. Music for this movie was composed by C. Ramchandra.
Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd Rafi, Talat Mehmood, Asha Bhonsle and Chitalkar (C. Ramchandra) had given their voices to the songs in this movie.
