Today’s song is from the film Bhabhi-1938.
When the film ‘Bhabhi’ is mentioned, we first remember the 1957 AVM film Bhabhi, which had very good songs like ” Chal ud jaa re panchhi” in 3 parts or “Chali chali re patang meri chali” etc. This was a very successful and a popular film – a truly ‘Family Picture’, in those days. There were 3 movies with the same title ‘Bhabhi’ released in 1938, 1957 and 1991.

Today’s song is from a very old film of the first decade of the Talkie films – Village Girl aka Gram Kanya-1936.
There were 3 films with the same title. The first one was made as a Silent film, with Sulochana in the lead opposite Raja Sandow. The film was made by Imperial Film Company, Bombay and it was directed by Mohan Bhavnani. He later married actress Enakshi Rama Rau in 1931. The second film was in 1936, today’s film and the third was made in 1945 with singer and actress Nurjahan. It had excellent songs composed by Music Director Shyam Sunder. It was for this film that Mohd. Rafi recorded his first Hindi song in 1944. He sang in the Chorus and the lead singer was G.M.Durrani. However, when the times changed, Rafi was the lead singer and Durrani in the Chorus for a song in K.Asif’s film Laila Majnu !

Today’s song is from the 86 year old film Brahmachari-1938.
The film was made by master Vinayak under the banner of his own short-lived film company “Huns Pictures”. During its existence of only 4 years, the company had given 10 memorable films. Though Vinayak’s films had a lot of demand, he had to close the company due to financial miscalculations which led to its being sold.

Today’s song is from the film jailor-1938.
The film was made by Minerva Movietone. It was directed by Sohrab Modi. Music was by Meer Saheb and all the 11 songs of the film were written by a young, ambitious poet Ameer Haider Kamaal Amrohavi – who later on became Kamaal Amrohi, a director and husband of Meena Kumari. The cast of the film was Sohrab Modi, Leela CXhitnis, Sadiq Ali (who was known as ‘The Prince of Minerva), Eruch Tarapore ( a relative of Sohrab Modi, who worked only in his films and also sang), Sheela, Sharifa, Kusum Deshpande etc.

Today’s song is from the film Karma-1933. It is a special song for two reasons. One- it was the First Talkie film made in both Hindi and English and two- this was the first Hindi film to have an English song in it. Later on, ofcourse, many more English songs have appeared in Hindi films.

Today’s song is a duet from the film Punarmilan-1940.
My favourite Marathi/Hindi/English author ISAQ MUJAWAR has written several – over 30 – books on Hindi and Marathi old films, people and related topics. One of his books in English is ” Maharashtra – The Birthplace of the Indian Film Industry”. This is a very rare book to find one. I have the original as well as its xerox copy. The original book was gifted to me by my Friend from Ahmedabad, Mr. P.S.Seshadri. He is an occasional visitor and commenter of this Blog.
