Sometimes in happens in nature. When particular facility is absent, the nature makes up for it by bestowing extra capabilities in other facilities. No other example is more eminent and more gifted in the Indian film industry, than KC Dey – an artist who lost his eyesight completely, just as he entered his teen years. And this apparent handicap was compensated by nature, by gifting the young Krishna Chandra with exceptional memory, an extraordinary understanding of the finer nuances of music, and a brilliant creativity that enabled him to be an outstanding artist in ways more than one.
Remembering the legendary KC Dey on the anniversary of his passing away (28th November).

My interest in Urdu ghazals is as old as my interest in Hindi film songs of the golden era. For me, Talat Mehmood, Madan Mohan, Sahir Ludhinavi, Kaifi Azmi were synonymous with filmy ghazals of golden period. Of course, I was already aware of one of the greatest Urdu poets of Indian sub-continent, Allama Iqbal’s name associated with ‘saare jahaan se achcha Hindustan hamaara’ from my school days. The ghazals of the film ‘Mirza Ghalib’ (1954) expanded my horizon of Urdu poetry of Mirza Ghalib and some other poets like Daagh through non-filmy ghazals. From 1972 onwards, TV became a major medium through which I could watch the programmes of Urdu ghazal singing covering singers like Rajkumar Rizvi and his wife Indrani Rizvi, Rajendra Mehta and his wife Neena Mehta, Chandan Das, Peenaz Masani, Talat Aziz and many more.

During the early 50s, whenever there was any function, or a marriage or Upnayan ceremony in some relative’s place, I alongwith all my cousins used to have a field day. Such functions were usually held during summer vacations,so there was no tension of Exams or studies. There were about 15-16 of us, both boys and girls put together. One favourite game that we used to play was called ” Bhendya “. This was similar today’s ‘Antakshari ‘. In those times our game consisted of only Marathi songs-Bhavgeets or cinema songs.

The year is 1935.
A young Anil Biswas is preparing to record a song for a newly arrived Heroine-RATTAN BAI. She had come from Calcutta, after working in the big banner ” New Theatres”. Having worked in films like ‘Subah ka Sitara’ and Yahudi ki Ladki-1933, with the legendary singer Sehgal, her name had become famous already. She had also worked in Rooplekh-34 and karvaan-e-hayaat-35.

A few months back, I came across a non-filmy ghazal ‘asser-e-gham ka bhalaa phir kahaan thikaanaa thhaa’ sung by Kamla Jharia, a classical singer of dadra, thumri, ghazals and devotional songs. She was also an actor-singer and a playback singer mainly in 30s and 40s. I loved this ghazal so much that in token of my appreciation, I decided to write an article on this ghazal for which I was collecting background information on it. During this period, I came across another audio clip of the same ghazal on YT, sung by her. But this time, it was accredited to a Hindi film ‘Struggle’ (1936). So I put my plan to write an article on hold until I solved the puzzle of this ghazal being labelled both as non-filmy as well as a filmy ghazal.
