VINTAGE SHAMSHAD BEGUM …..Song No. 7
——————————————-
Today’s song is sung by Shamshad Begum, Sulochana Kadaam and Mohd. Rafi for the film Lal Dupatta-48.

In our last episode, we briefly looked at the industry scene in 1948. This was the beginning of the peak of the “Golden Era” of HFM which for the next 10 to 15 years gave immense everlasting musical happiness to people in India. The music of this era was so enchanting that even today, music lovers all over the world demand old songs of this era in any Musical stage show conducted anywhere.

“Ham Ek Hain” (1946), a Prabhat Film Company Limited production, was a movie with a message. in this movie, Durga Khote, a noble widowed matriarch brings up many orphan kids in addition to her own son. These kids are her own son Shankar (Dev Anand), and orphans Yusuf (Rehman), John (Rane) and Durga (Rehana). As can be seen, she is raising three boys of three different religions as her own, plus one girl of low caste , thus sending a strong message of “Ham ek Hain” (We are one).

This song will take you on a brief three minute journey of delightful music and singing.  Unknown and obscure gems such as this one, tell me that Hindi film music is poorer than what should have been; that there are less than 20 songs in Hindi films by this voice, her mainstay being Bangla films and Bangla non-film and religious songs.

Remembering Utpala Sen on the anniversary of her passing away (13th May).

VINTAGE SHAMSHAD BEGUM…..Song No- 5
——————————————

1947 was an important year not only for the Nation, but also for the Film industry that sadly said ‘Good Bye’ to many of its popular Muslim artistes, who chose to migrate to the new nation PAKISTAN, created on the basis of Religion. The departure of many talented and popular, successful artistes and technicians was an immediate blow to the film industry, but the void thus created was soon filled up with its own personnel ‘waiting in the wings’ to take over. India never had a shortage of talented people, but it was Pakistan, who faced problems in establishing its New Film Industry. Their major problem was shortage of Financiers and Producers-who were mostly Hindus and who either shifted to India or got killed in the riots and their studios were burnt down by the rioters.

VINTAGE SHAMSHAD BEGUM….Song No. 4
————————————–

Today’s song is from film Doosri Shaadi-1947. This is a duet with Ram Kamlani.

“Shaadi” seems to be quite a favourite Title word for Hindi film producers. There are very funny Titles with the word Shaadi. To start with, there was a film called ” Third wife ” made by Madan Theatres in 1931-the First year of Talkie films in India. Those days Polygamy was very common ( and why not ? King Dashrath of Ramayana had also 3 wives. Even in Mythology Lord Krishna had an astronomical figure of 16008 wives. Mortals today are struggling to manage even ONE wife ! ). Doosri Shadi was made in 1947 and then it was followed by a move practicable Pehli shaadi in 1953. So the number finally came down to a manageable number.

Troika of the latest century singers – Mukesh, Rafi and Kishore – 1. Mukesh
——————————————————————————-

Sometime in the middle of April 2015, I had sent two write-ups to Atul ji and coincidentally, both these write-ups were on the songs sung by Mukesh. Atul ji sent me a reply saying that for the time being, he was avoiding posting songs of Mukesh as also of Rafi who are on their way to hitting centuries of their songs in the Blog. So he reckoned that my write ups on Mukesh’s songs may have to be held back for a few days. It was apparent that articles for the special events had already been planned.

A click on ‘Some stats’ page of the Blog revealed that while Mukesh was close to attaining his 700th song, Mohammed Rafi was only one short of his 2400th song in the Blog. A further glance on this page revealed that Kishore Kumar too was also very close to hitting his 900th song. So it was rare ‘celestial’ event like that of conjunction of planets Jupiter, Venus and Mars in the triangle shape which is expected on October 28, 2015. And all the three playback singers are nothing less than celestial stars along with Talat Mehmood and Manna Dey. There was an inner urge in me to pay tributes to the troika of playback singers on this unique conjunction of century songs. A thought tickled in my mind. What if I was to select special songs for the troika of playback singers on the occasion?

VINTAGE SHAMSHAD BEGUM….Song No. 3
——————————————-

Today’s song is from film Namumkin-46. It is a duet of Shamshad Begum and K.S.Ragi.

We are accustomed to see only the usual regular well known names, but when some new or unknown name appears, our brows are raised and we wonder who this singer is. Same thoughts came to my mind when I first came across his name few years back. One would immediately think of the singers in a Gurudwara, who are also called Raagis. I tried and tried very hard, but except that he hailed from Andhra pradesh, I could not get any other information on him. Then one fine morning K S Ragi’s daughter appeared on RMIM forum and gave some more information. Though even this was very meagre, still at least something was there.

VINTAGE SHAMSHAD BEGUM…..Song No. 2
—————————————–

Today’s song is from film Ratnavali-45. Not a very well known name. Even in those days,it was not a film known by many ! But it had very good songs. This was a costume film made by Amar Pictures.

Amar Pictures was owned by Chimanlal Desai- who had established Sagar movietone in 1930 along with Dr. Ambalal Patel. Both were actually in Distribution business, but they entered film production line with the help of Ardeshir Irani of Imperial Film Company. Dr. Patel left Sagar around 1936 to go back to his Distribution business again and Chimanlal left Sagar in 1939 to form National Studios, joining hands with RCA’s Yusuf Fazalbhoy.

Mention of the name Mohammed Shafi brings to mind some timeless and peerless classics.  The immortal lorie song “Koi Pukare Dhire Se Tujhe” from ‘Mangu’ (1954), is a composition that is difficult to forget.

Remembering music director Mohammed Shafi on the anniversary of his passing away today (30 April).
