“Albeli”(1974) was produced by Vijay Bali and directed by Karunesh Thakur for Kusum Pictures, Bombay. The by now obscure movie had Rehana Sultan, Vinod Mehra, Naazima, Sujit Kumar, Mahmood, Uttara(new find), Nana Palsikar, Sanjana, Maruti, V.Gopal, Husn Bano, S.N.Bannerjee, Dhanraj, Qamar Sarhadi, Billo, Kailash Kumari, Bimla Sharma, Darashan Rajendra, Ramlal, Niaz Haider, Kajal, Bhushan Tiwari etc in it.

The movie had four songs in it. The four songs were penned by four different lyricists. Two songs have been covered so far.

Here is the third song from “Albeli”(1974) to appear in the blog. According to credits, this song is sung by Suman Kalyanpur and Kanchan. Prabha Thakur is the lyricist. Music is composed by Kalyanji Anandji.

One of the earlier posted song was penned by Maya Goivind. This song is written by Prabha Thakur. It is rare to find even one female lyricist in Hindi movies, but this movie had two of them ! The lyrics have some colloquial Hindi words in it that were rarely used in Hindi movie songs.

Only audio of the song is available. It sounds like a synchronised dance song or may be a song where some females are getting teased by their sahelis. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the movie as well as on the picturisation of the song.

I have not been able to get a few words right. I request our readers with keener ears to help fill in the blanks/ suggest corrections wherever applicable.

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # (Darindaa-1977)
——————————————-——————————————

“Darindaa-1977” was directed by Kaushal Bharati for ‘Bunty Enterprises, Bombay’. It was produced by M.S. Gulati. It had Sunil Dutt, Feroz Khan, Parveen Babi, Madan Puri, Bharat Bhushan, Raj Mehra, Shivraj, Mridula, Birbal, Sajjan and others. Premnath, Preeti Sapru, Komila Virk, Lily Chakravarti and Janaki Dass had special appearances in this movie.

Kaushal Bharati who had directed this movie was also the writer of this movie. Editing of this film was done by B.S. Glaad.

“Darindaa-1977”was passed by Censor Board on 24.11.1977.

This movie has five songs written by Indeevar and music was composed by Kalyanji-Anandji. Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle, Yesudas, Kanchan, Mukesh and Mohd Rafi had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

Here is the list of songs in this movie. (HFGK mentions total seven sound tracks for this movie which were released on its records. Out of these there were five songs, one music track and one dialogues’ track).

SNo. Song Title Singer/s Posted On
01 Aap ke gumsum rehne se har shai pe udaasi chhaayi hai Kishore Kumar
02 Ladki kaahe ko bani Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle, chorus
03 Ho o …pyaar kar le, kar le pyaar gori Yesudas, Kanchan
04 Chaahe aaj mujhe naa pasand karo Mukesh 22.07.2017
05 Tu jo nahin koyi mera, mera koyi nahin Mohd Rafi
06 Music track
07 Dialogues track

I do not remember to have watched this movie and also I do not remember to have listened to the songs of this movie except the one that has been posted on the blog.

The song ‘chaahe aaj mujhe naa pasand karo’ sung by Mukesh has been presented on the blog by our Shri Raja Saab and it was posted on 22.07.2017.

Raja Saab had also watched this movie again (as he mentioned, for the above post) and had briefly mentioned about the story of this movie in his post which I am reproducing below.

Briefly, the story is how Sunil Dutt, separated as a poor young boy from his rich childhood friend, Parveen Babi, grows up as a yogi, supposedly to do good deeds.
But he has just one goal in mind – to find Parveen, and win her over. He searches everywhere for her – becoming a monster (Darinda) in the process, even killing women in his pursuit.
And when he finally does find her, she is engaged to be married to Feroze Khan. How he then reacts, what is Parveen’s reaction, what happens to Feroze?
– See the film if you want to find out. (There’s a bit of hint in this song too)

Today I present the second song from this movie which is sung by Yesudas and Kanchan. The song is lip-synced by Feroz Khan and Parveen Babi on screen. This is a romantic song between the two ‘lovers’ or ‘engaged couple’ 🙂 and shot on beautiful outdoor locations and a ‘sea-beach’. The pair of Feroz Khan and Parveen Babi looked beautiful in this song.

I had not heard this song earlier, but it is a nice hummable song and it grows upon us if we listen to it twice or thrice.

I guess that this movie must be a watchable movie given the ‘social drama’ and also I guess it must be having some powerful dialogues of Sunil Dutt.

We will ‘travel’ into this movie more in future… 🙂

Till then let us enjoy this duet in the special voices of Yesudas and Kanchan…

(Note- The video print of this song (and even the movie available on internet) is not much clear).

Lyrics are by Indeevar and music is composed by Kalyanji-Anandji.

Today’s song is from the film Kanchan-1941.

1941 was the first year in the second decade of the Talkie Era and it was the beginning of the emergence of a New film industry. When Talkie started in 1931, for many years after that, the films were made by the people who had done work in the Silent films. These films had a spill over for the silent era artistes. Once the films started talking, most silent artistes who could not speak Hindi or Urdu automatically disappeared. Thus started the influx of new actors who could speak Hindi and sing songs, in whatever way they could. Intelligent directors like V Shantaram,Bhavnani, Sohrab Modi, Chandulal Shah, Himanshu Rai, B N Sircar, L V Prasad and a host of Gujarati directors understood that the Talkie needs a different treatment than silent films. Music directors from stage dramas tried their hand in composing film music.

In the next 8-9 years, there was a perceptible change in the film making, acting, singing, and composing music in the films that were made. Quality artistes from the silent era continued for some more years – finally giving way to the new artistes. The 30s and the 40s mostly differed in film music and story contents. The new blood composers like Anil Biswas, C Ramchandra, Naushad, Ghulam Haider, K Datta, Hansraj Behl, Bulo C Rani, Gyan Dutt and many more replaced the Parsi, Marathi and Gujarati drama music to more acceptable lilting songs. Many musical films were made and some everlasting songs were composed by these people. At the end of the 1940s, one more major change in the film industry took place due to Partition. Let us see some important films.

JBH Wadfia became Chairman of the Film Advisory Board. He produced the First Sindhi film “Ekta”-1940. His film Court Dancer was also in English.

Asra– Debut of actor director N A Ansari.

Behan– Mehboob directed this film having an incest suggestive story.

Chandan– Debut of S N Tripathi as an MD

Chitralekha– First big success of Kidar Sharma. Mehtab’s bath scene caused a ripple.

Dhandhora– Actor comedian Charlie directed the only film.

Doctor– Pankaj Mullick gave excellent songs. First popular song with woof beats-‘ Chale pawan ki chaal ‘.

Jhoola– One of the most successful films like kangan and bandhan, starring Ashok kunmar and Leela Chitnis.

Kanchan– First composed song of naushad-” Bata do koi”

Khazanchi– A milestone in musical revolution with Punjabi Theka, by Ghulam haider. Debut of Shamshad Begum in Hindi films.

Lagan– Saigal, as usual, gives good songs.

Mala– was remade as ‘ Amar-54’ with music again by Naushad only. Jayant played the same role in both films.

Naya Sansar– Story of Newspaper world. A novelty. Ashok Kumar’s famous cigarette smoking in films started from this film, solving his problem of ‘ what to do with the hands during acting’ !

Nirdosh– Mukesh sings his first song.

Padosi– Last film of V Shantaram before leaving Prabhat. A Landmark film. ” Kaisa chhaya hai ujala” is a popular chorus song.

Pardesi– Debut of actress Anjali Devi (not the southwali) with real name ‘Durgesh’

Radhika– Debut of Nalini Jaywant.

Raj Nartaki– Ambitious Wadia film in English , Bangla and Hindi. Released in the USA by Columbia Pictures of Hollywood.

Sangam– Amritlal Nagar’s first film as a writer. He did 18 films as writer and Lyricist.

Sikandar– A Magnum-Opus from Minerva. Chorus song- ” Zindagi hai pyar se” is very popular.

Taj mahal– Debut of Baby Suraiya as an actress.

Sasural and Ummeed were 2 films in which Noorjehan senior acted and sang. However these films are usually wrongly included in the filmography of Malika E Tarannum Noor jehan. She entered Hindi films only with the film Khandan-1942 at Lahore.

Under this scene the film Kanchan-1941 was made by Chitra productions, Bombay. It was produced by Leela Chitnis and C.R.Gwalani. The entire film was shot in the studios of Ranjit Movietone, using their technical staff like cinematographer, editor etc. This film is important because of one song from this film – ” Bata do koi ” sung by Leela Chitnis. This song was the first composed and recorded song of Music Director Naushad, although his first film ‘ Premnagar-1940′ was released much before film Kanchan-41.

There is a short but interesting history to this song.

D.N.Madhok,who was a good friend of Naushad in his struggling days had full faith in his capabilities as a composer and took Naushad to Chandulal Shah.He offered to employ him for his forthcoming film.Naushad prepared a tune for Madhok’s bhajan,”Bata do koi kaun gali gaye shyam”.However the film was shelved.
When Naushad assisted Gyan Dutt for the Punjabi film ‘Mirza sahiba’ in 1938,Gyan dutt heard it and used it later in Kanchan in 1941.

Although Premnagar was released in 1940 as Naushad’s first independent film, the above song is the first recorded song of Naushad, independently prepared.
Gyan Dutt was a noble soul.He did give the credit to Naushad for this song. The credits of the film mentioned both names,Naushad as well as Gyan Dutt as Music Directors, though Naushad’s filmography does not mention this film at many places. (from an extract of D.N.Madhok’s interview.).

The cast of the film Kanchan-1941 was Leela Chitnis, Arun Ahuja, Mubarak, Pramila, Nagendra Muzumdar, Kesari, Tarabai (sister of actresses Sitara Devi and Alaknanda and mother of dancxer Gopi krishna) and others. The film released in august and its story appeared in the October issue of the film magazine Film India. Our Sadanand ji had given its edited copy as follows…….

A tailor (Nagendra Mazumdar) has two daughters – Kanchan (Leela Chitnis) and Kumud (Pramila). Both the daughters are in love with Kishore (Arun Ahuja), an educated young man. Kishore likes Kanchan and he reciprocates her feelings towards him whereas he avoids Kumud. Subsequently, Kumud works out a plot which forces Kishore to leave for a city job.

Now a landlord (Mubarak) enters the scene. He has a vicked manager who, for a very minor reason, burns down the huts of the farmers. Kishore comes to know about it and he rescues the farmers from the clutches of the fire. In this process, the father of Kanchan and Kumud also comes under the monetary trap of the landlord as he lends money to reset the house.

Since the father is not able to repay the loan, the landlord gives him options of either attaching his whatever the assets or to give one of his daughters in marriage. Kumud refuses to act as a pawn to the landlord. Kanchan agrees to marry the landlord thus sacrificing her love for Kishore.

When the arrangements for the marriage are going in full swing, Kanchan’s mother who had known the landlord from her younger days when she was in love with him, gives the landlord a long lecture of self-consciousness on the issue. The landlord has a change of heart and he withdraws himself as the bridegroom. Kanchan gets married to Kishore.

One of the cast members- Nagendra Muzumdar was the father of Music Director Ninu Muzumdar. Nagendra was born in a happy family in the year 1894 in Bombay. After his father died, “Pearl Dairy’ established by his father ran very well doing good business. Suddenly, Nagendra’s wife fell seriously ill and despite taking her full care, she expired. Due to neglect of the Dairy in this period, Dairy also closed down.

He shifted to Baroda and worked as a State Police Inspector.Later he worked as Watch and Ward Inspector in Baroda Railways. He left the job and started working as a hero in dramas of famous dramatist R.V.Desai. Heeralal, the owner of Laxmi Film Company, Bombay was impressed with his personality and took him to Bombay in 1926 to act in his silent films. Thus started his film career. In those days Silent films used to be completed within a month. He worked as a Hero in films of Laxmi, Jagdish and Imperial film companies.

In the same year, he directed a film ‘Paani mein aag’-1926, made by Royal Arts. Then came two more films made by Kaiser E Hind films. He also directed films for other companies. In all, he directed 15 Silent films by 1932. By then the Talkie had arrived. In the next 14 years he directed 12 Talkie films like – Ras Vilas-32, Sassi Punnu-32, Patit Pawan-33, mirza Sahibaan-33, Mera Imaan-34, Kala Wagh-34, Rangila nawab-35, Kimiyagar-36, Aaj ka Aladdin aka Aladdin II-36, Lehri lutera-37, Talwarwala-46 and Swadesh Sewa-46.

When offers for direction became few, he started acting in films. He acted in 12 films. When K L Saigal came to Bombay, Nagendra wanted to work with him. In the film Tansen-43, he did the role of Tansen’s (Saigal’s) father and he was very happy. The films that he acted in were Kanchan-41,Beti-41, Khilauna-42, Bhakt Surdas-42, Armaan-42, Tansen-43, Gauri-43, Adab Arz-43, Bharthari-44, Prabhu ka Ghar-45, Ghazal-45 and Dhanna Bhagat-45.

His last 2 films came in 1946, but his health was not cooperating for quite a few years. He gave up work and took a rest. However, he suffered from paralysis and died on 22-8-1951. His son Ninu Majumdar worked in Bombay A.I.R. as head of Gujarati programmes, since 1937. By the time Nagendra died, Ninu had already started working as a Music Director. As a Director, Nagendra had worked with the best of his times like, Master Vithal, Zubeida, Jillo, Billimorea brothers, Madhuri, Navinchandra, Durga Khote, Jairaj, Sultana, Noorjehan sr and such luminaries of those days. He worked for Ranjit, Imperial, Sharda, Lakshmi, Jayant Desai films, Yagnik films etc etc.

( Information for this article is collated from various sources like Listener’s Bulletins No. 40 of Feb-80 and No.145 of July 2010, HFGK, muVyz, Sapnon ke Saudagar by Vithal Pandya, Silent films by Dr.Verma, Lost Treasures by kamlakar P. and my notes.)

The heroine of this film Leela Chitnis had led a life full of ups and downs. She earned money, name and fame but her family life was not a happy one. When I read her autobiography in Marathi – चंदेरी दुनियेत ( Life in the world of Silver Screen ) I felt sympathy for her. Her son was a failure as a Hero and she died a lonely death in an Old age home in America where her son and relatives lived in luxury.

Today’s song is sung by the Music Director Gyan Dutt and the comedian Kesari, with a chorus. Enjoy…..

I am poor in remembering important dates, as I have stressed many a times. And ith passage of time, I am actually becoming more absent minded. We already have our anniversary page, hich is consulted by many music lovers, but I have not consulted it myself for quite some time. So, I come to know about important music related dates from others, who themselves may have come to know about these dates from our anniversary page ! 🙂

Today morning, I came to know that it is Mukesh’s birth anniversary. And I also noticed that as many as two Mukesh songs were covered yesterday (21 july 2021) and that took the tally of Mukesh songs in the blog to 799 !

So fate had ordained that Mukesh would complete his 800th song in the blog on his birth anniversary !

With so many Mukesh songs already covered in the blog, just a few Mukesh songs are left to be covered. One would expect that most well known Mukesh songs are already covered in the blog. And they are right. Still, there are some Mukesh songs that are so far still at large. There is one such song that readily came to my mind. I myself was surprised to note that such a well known Mukesh song was still not there in the blog.

This song is from “Dharmatma”(1975). The movie had five songs in it, including one multiple version song. The five songs were sung by five singers, namely Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Mahendra Kapoor, Mukesh and Kanchan. While the first three singers sang one solo song each, Mukesh and Kanchan sang two duets in the movie. Both duets were extremely popular songs of those days. The first duet, Kya khoob lagti ho badi sundar dikhti ho(Dharmatma), is already there in the blog.

Here is the second Mukesh Kanchan duet from “Dharmatma”(1975). It is picturised on Rekha and Feroz Khan. Rekha is with him, and Feroz Khan is dreaming about Hema Malini. This way, this song is similar in picturisation to the “Gora Aur Kaala”(1972) song covered in the blog yesterday. 🙂

Indeewar in the lyricist. Music is composed by Kalyanji Anandji.

As discussed above, This song is the 800th Mukesh song in the blog. Quite an appropriate song to mark the birth anniversary of legendary singer Mukesh.

With this song, all the songs of “Dharmatma”(1975) are now covered in the blog. The movie thus joins the list of movies that have been YIPPEED in the blog.

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 94 # Kalyanji-Anandji – Year 1975
———————————————–———————————————

Today 30th June 2020 is 92nd birth anniversary of Kalyanjibhai Virjibhai Shah (30 June 1928 – 24 August 2000) of the great music director duo Kalyanji-Anandji.

On this occasion as a tribute to him here is a song from the ‘1975’ movie ‘Rafoo Chakkar’. I vaguely remember to have watched this movie with my parents and brothers in my childhood. I was just around seven years old then (considering the date of release of this movie). However, the songs of this movie have always remained in my memory. I think they were very popular in those years and were frequently heard on loud speakers and radio. Particularly the songs ‘chhuk chhuk chhak chhak Bombay se Baroda tak’, ‘tumko mere dil ne’, ‘kisi pe dil agar aa jaaye to kya hota hai’, ‘dil lena buri balaa hai’, ‘ae zamaane tu kar le sitam pe sitam’…

Almost all songs from this movie were good and I have a big nostalgia of the songs of this movie. So, when I became a member of this blog I had shared a couple of songs, and one of them ‘tumko mere dil ne’ was posted on 21.01.2014 (much later according to me, because when I joined the blog I always thought all songs of the seventies must be already there . 🙂

‘Tum ko mere dil ne’ has always been my big favorite and so is ‘kisi pe dil agar’ but then there is one more song from this movie which brings back memories for me and I am going to present this song today.
And since this song was pending since 2013, I thought I should go with it instead of taking another song when I was thinking of a post on this occasion today. All these years this song has been in my dormant memory associated with the name of this movie ‘Rafoo Chakkar’. I have no recollection of having watched this movie again either in theatre or on TV channels. I have only watched a couple of its songs on TV. I may have watched parts of this movie when it was being aired on TV.

“Rafoo Chakkar-1975’ was a presentation from the ‘House of Nadiadwala’. It was produced by I.A. Nadiadwala for ‘M.I. Films Pvt Ltd’. This movie was directed by Narinder Bedi.

Ajay Kumar was the chief assistant director while assistant director was Kapil Kapoor. Raj Bedi was the dialogue director.

Story of this movie was written by Jayant Dharmadhikari, whereas the dialogues were written by Kadar Khan. K.K. Shukla had written the screenplay of this movie.

Editing of this movie was done by Babubhai Thakkar.

It had Rishi Kapoor, Neetu Singh, Rajindernath, Faryal, Asrani, Master Chikkoo with Paintal, Madan Puri, Anwar Hussain, Sulochana, Mumtaz Begum, Shetty, Viju Khote, Shamim, Surender Shetty, K.N. Singh, Sudhir, Bhagwan, MacMohan, Man Mohan, Habib, Jankidas, M. Rajan, Tiwari, Mohan Sherry, Hiralal, Rajan Haksar, Goga, Dalpat, Sapru and Kamran.

Lyrics were written by Gulshan Bawra and music was composed by Kalyanji-Anandji.

Asha Bhonsle, Usha Mangeshkar, Shailendra Singh, Kanchan, Mahesh Kumar and Aziz Nazan were the playback singers who had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

Jaikumar conducted the music while Frank Fernand was the arranger and Babla was the assistant in music of this movie.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 02.01.1975.

In 1975 there were a ‘dozen’ of movies where Kalyanji-Anandji had composed the music for them. Here is the list;

Sno. Title Year Passed by Censor Board Lyricist Represented on the Blog</
1 Anokhaa 1975 02.04.1975 Indeewar, Sawan Kumar N
2 Apne Dushman 1975 19.11.1975 Verma Malik, Qamar Jalalabadi N
3 Bhoolaa Bhatkaa 1975 13.10.1975 Anand Bakshi
4 Chori Mera Kaam 1975 30.04.1975 Verma Malik Yes/Yippeeee’ed
5 Dharmaatmaa 1975 30.04.1975 Indeewar Y
6 Do Thug 1975 05.12.1975 Rajinder Krishan N
7 Faraar 1975 11.11.1975 Rajinder Krishan Y
8 Himaalaya Se Ooncha 1975 15.04.1975 Indeewar Y
9 Monto 1975 15.05.1975 Verma Malik
10 Rafoo Chakkar 1975 02.01.1975 Gulshan Bawra Y
11 Uljhan 1975 31.10.1975 M.G. Hashmat Y
12 Zoro 1975 31.10.1975 Verma Malik

None of the songs of this movie “Rafoo Chakkar-1975” make it to the annual list of ‘Binaca Geetmala’ of that year. And only two compositions of Kalyanji-Anandji featured in that year’s list one from the previous years’ release ‘Haath Ki Safaai-1974’ i.e. ‘waadaa kar le sajnaa’ at number six and another from the movie ‘Dharmaatma-1975’ which was ‘tere chehre mein wo jaadu hai’ at number thirty-one.

The title song of ‘Uljhan-1975’ figured at number eleven in the annual list of ‘Binaca Geetmala-1976’.

Let us now enjoy the today’s song which is sung by Aziz Nazan and Kanchan. On screen Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh are lip syncing the voices of Aziz Nazan and Kanchan whereas we can see Rajindernath, Paintal, Sulochana, Mumtaz Begum and many others in the picturization of this song.
Rishi Kapoor, Neetu Singh, Rajindernath and Paintal are performing ‘hippies’ in disguise (not for viewers) to get release of the captivated Sulochana and Mumtaz Begum.

“Qurbaani”(1980) was produced and directed by Feroz Khan. The movie had Feroz Khan, Vinod Khanna, Zeenat Aman, Amjad Khan, Shakti Kapoor, Aruna Irani, Amrish Puri and Kadar Khan etc in it.

I knew that Feroz Khan’s movies were inspired from Western movies, but I never knew that he would unbshedly lift frame by frame scenes. It turns out that the movie is almost a frame by frame lift from “The Master touch”(1974), an Italian/German curry western movie.

One would argue that “Qurbani”(1980) had songs in it and that way it had at least its songs that were not inspired from the movie. Indeed that is what one though till now.

It turns out that even the songs of this movie were inspired from foreign sources, and not necessarily from the usual sources.

Take the case of “Laila Main Laila” song rom “Qurbaani”(1980). I thought that it was one the “better” and “original” compositions created during the “disco” era of HFM. But I was wrong. It turns out that this popular song is a direct lift from the composition “Chicano” by an African group called “Black Blood”.

Here is this “Qurbaani”(1980) song “Laila Main Laila” which is sung by Kanchan, Amit Kumar and chorus. The song is picturised as a “disco” song on Zeenat Aman, Amjad Khan and others.

Lyricist is Indeewar. He gets the credit for fitting in lyrics to go with the tune. Kalyanji Anandji are the music arrangers, rather than music composers, for this song.
