Main akeli Raaja aaja

This article is meant to be posted in atulsongaday.me. If this article appears in sites like lyricstrans.com and ibollywoodsongs.com etc then it is piracy of the copyright content of atulsongaday.me and is a punishable offence under the existing laws.

“Geet” (1944) was produced by A R Kardar and directed by S U Sunny. The movie had Chanda, Shahu Modak, Nirmala, Amir Ali, Shakir Ali, A Shah, Zahid Ali etc in it.

Three songs from this movie has been discussed in the past. Here is the fourth song from this movie to appear in the blog. This song, which was on the reverse side of another Nirmala Devi song (discussed yesterday) is also sung by Nirmala devi. Music is composed by Naushad.

The lyricist of this song is not known.

Since Nirmala devi acted in this movie, so it means that this song is picturised on herself.

Noting down the lyrics of such songs accurately requires indepth knowledge of language as well as Indian Culture (in this case knowledge about Lord Krishna). If someone decides to note down lyrics of this song without that kind of knowledge, then he/ she will come up with lyrics that will be horribly off the mark. If one searches, hopelessly incorrect lyrics of this song (mindlessly copied by most sites) is available online. I know where I may be going wrong in noting down the lyrics and I seek help, but these lyrics typers are not even aware of their ignorance.

Noting down the lyrics of this song was a challenge, though less of a challenge compared to the song discussed yesterday. Noting down the lyrics of this song has given me good satisfaction, though I have not been able to get some words correctly. So as always. I request our readers with keener ears to help correct the errors/ fill in the gaps as applicable.

I take this opportunity to thank our respected senior knowledgeable readers, especially Mr Bharat Upadhyay and Mr Pratap, who with their deep understanding of the language as well as culture have been regularly coming to my rescue in pointing out the correct words.

Song-Main akeli raaja aaja (Geet)(1944) Singer-Nirmala Devi, MD-Naushad

Lyrics

main akeli raaja
aa ja
aaja re raaja
kaise baaje muraliya
ke haaye raam
haaye raam
kaise baaje muraliya
main akeli raaja aaja
aaja re raaja
kaise baaje muraliya
ke haaye raam
haaye raam
kaise baaje muraliya

nainon mein more chhaayi laali
joban tohe dewe gaali
nainon mein more chhaayi laali
joban tohe dewe gaali
aaja mere baanke maali
aaja mere baanke maali
ke tere bina o chhaliya
haan haan ke tere bina
tere bin o chhaliya
kaise baaje muraliya
ke haaye raam
haaye raam
kaise baaje muraliya
main akeli raaja aaja
aaja re raja
kaise baaje muraliya
ke haaye raam
haaye raam
kaise baaje muraliya

nainon ke sang ??kar saajan
lage pyaar ke mele
koi hasraten bech rahi hai
aa matwaale le le
nainon ke sang ??kar saajan
lage pyaar ke mele
koi hasraten bech rahi hai
aa matwaale le le
laakh jyotiyaan(?) lekar aayin
kaajal ki ik dori
laakh jyotiyaan(?) lekar aayi
kaajal ki ik dori
par dil ka panchhi sone(?) mein
roye hai chori chori
par dil ka panchhi sone(?) mein
roye hai chori chori
ke tere bin o chhaliya
haan haan ke tere bin
tere bin o chhaliya
kaise baaje muraliya
ke haaye raam haaye raam
kaise baaje muraliya
main akeli raaja aaja
aaja re raaja
kaise baaje muraliya
ke haaye raam
haaye raam
kaise baaje muraliya

It is surprising that she has sung the old songs in a weak and difussed voice while in her fag end of her career she sang in a clear and at times in shrill(her trade mark) voice. She became stronger as she grew older!!

Thanks for your ‘zarranawazi’, Atul ji. Your site is taken as a Reference one for Hindi film music of that era. My small contributions, towards making it as accurate and complete as possible, are made with this objective in mind. They are nothing compared to the research and analysis put in by the principal contributors.
