Today’s song is a forgotten good song from the film Ghulam Begum Badshah-1956.

Those who were young in the decade of the 50’s and 60’s, had grown up reading stories which started with “Once upon a time….”. These imaginary stories told the adventures, wars, fights, Love stories etc. of kings and rebels. Filmmakers were intelligent enough to make up and use such stories to entertain their audience. These stories had ample scope for big, impressive sets, colourful and royal costumes, fights, beautiful dancers, magicians, plotting evil prime ministers (vaziers) and the rebels, who finally won the kingdom and the love of the beautiful princess !

Today (25 March 2024) is the festival of Holi, the festival of colour.

The word Holi is derived from demoness Holika.

The tale of Holika and her relatives is quite interesting. According to legends, she was an Asuri who was the daughter of Kashyap and Diti. Rahu and Ketu were her sons.

Today’s song is from an obscure film Insaan-1952.

The year of 1952 – It was just 5 years since we got our Independence and only 2 years after we became a Sovereign Democratic Republic, totally and actually free from the last contact with the British Empire, like being called a ‘Dominion Republic’. The General Elections were over and a Congress Government, as expected, took over as the new ruler. As far as the film industry was concerned, there was a huge crowd of new producers, who had a lot of black money to invest. This increased the number of films, but the quality was the victim. The proportion of quantity and quality was inverse. Film federation or the Indian government was unable to control this influx of outsiders.

Today’s song is from an almost unknown film Daku Bhupat-1960.

This was a dubbed film, originally made in Telugu as ” Raja Nandini”-1958. The system of spelling the proper nouns in Southern languages is different from most western or North Indian languages. I believe it all depends on the type of alphabet a language has. Some alphabets which are present in Devanagari script languages (like Marathi or Hindi for example) are not present in southern languages. So sounds like T and TH are both spelled as th. Thus Lalita in Hindi becomes Lalitha in south.
