Today’s song is the fourth song from this movie to be presented on the blog.
Today’s song is ‘lullaby’ sung by Geeta Dutt. Lyrics are by Sajan Bihari and music is composed by B.N. Bali.
We are all aware of the famous lullaby ‘nanhi kali sone chali’ sung by Geeta Dutt from the movie ‘Sujata-1959’. However, today’s ‘lullaby’ , unlike the ‘Sujaata”(1959) lullaby is a sad lullaby.
I don’t know how many of us take a look on the ‘Top Posts’ section on the blog. This song from the movie ‘Sujata’ maintained the ‘top slot’ in the ‘top posts’ for many years on the blog.
I remember when I was a newcomer on the blog I used to view this section and even now I used to view it regularly. I am sure ‘Nanhi kali sone chali’ must be the most viewed post on the blog so far.
Coming back to today’s song , Let us listen to and enjoy this less known lullaby sung by Geeta Dutt.
Only the audio of this song is available as of now.

Today’s song is from a C grade film called Baghi Sardar (1956).
I remember once Atul ji had expressed his opinion that ‘many times the B and C grade films provide A grade music’. I tend to agree with his opinion on this issue. There are many examples of songs from costume, stunt, action and religious films which became very popular. Off hand I remember at least two songs. The first was “Zara Saamne To Aa O Chhaliye” from a religious film ‘Janam Janam Ke Phere’ (1957). It was sung by Lata and Rafi, written by Bharat Vyas and music was by SN Tripathi. This song not only became very popular, but it became the No. 1 song on Binaca Geet Mala for 4 weeks. The second was a Rafi song “Parwardigar e Aalam, Tera Hi Hai Sahara” from the film ‘Hatimtai’ (1956). There was another song also from this film”Jhoomti Hai Nazar Jhoomta Hai Pyaar” which too became very popular. This was a costume film.
Another example comes to my mind. A qawwaali from the film ‘Al Hilal’ (1958), a costume film. This qawwaali “Hamen To Loot Liya Mil Ke Husn Waalon Ne” became very famous. This song also had the prestigious honor of being the 5000th song for this Blog on 13-11-2011. Further, it had an unique honor of having write ups from 3 stalwarts, namely Atul ji, Sudhir ji and Raja ji. Incidentally, earlier in 1935 also there was a film Al Hilal, first directorial venture of the great Mehboob Khan. This was a film made by Sagar Movietone. The songs of this film also became very popular. However, since the playback had not yet started then, no records were issued for these songs.
I used to like watching religious films because of the trick scenes of the films. I liked stunt and action films for their death defying stunts by the actors and I saw costume films because of their King, Queen and evil Vazir stories. Children liking such films, for the reasons given here, is understandable, but I wondered how adults and grown up people came to see such films. Later I learnt that there is a child hidden in every adult.
This child in some adults gets excited with magic, supernatural strength and fighting. Such people constituted the audience of B and C grade films. The audience for religious films constituted old adults, and ladies, who believed in God’s power. Film makers all over the world have always taken such people as their targets and films were made to attract them and satisfy their emotions.
Right from the First Silent film ‘Raja Harishchandra’ (1913), films have been made on religious stories. A vast nation like India provides plenty of folk tales and all these have been used to make films. In addition, Arabian Night stories of 1001 was yet another bumper source of masala for making interesting films. The 30’s, 40’s, 50’s and to some extent the 60’s had been making stunt / action / costume / religious films. In early films, till film ‘Aan’ (1952), the actors working in the films used to do all the stunts themselves. From this film, use of doubles and fight masters/composers started being used. In film ‘Aan’, the fights and the horses were managed by Azim Bhai and Douglas took care of fight scenes involving fencing. Same year, in films like ‘Sinbad Jahaazi’ (1952) and ‘Shin Shinaki Boobla Boo) (1952), the south developed hero Ranjan (real name Ramnarayan Venkatraman Sarma) appeared on Hindi scene in Bombay and entertained us with his Olympic level fencing fights. Earlier he was seen in ‘Chandralekha’ (1948), ‘Nishan’ (1949) and ‘Mangala’ (1949) – remakes of their Tamil films. In the subsequent years these Fight Masters became ‘Action Directors’.
In the films from 1935 to the 1950s, Nadia and others used to perform the stunts themselves. In the 60’s – a decade dominated by romantic films, for heroes, the action was mostly relegated to the climax scenes to rescue the ‘Damsels in Distress’ ! The 60’s also saw the emergence of ‘The Action Hero’. The first film, where a hero dared to bare his chest for the first time, was in film ‘Phool Aur Patthar” (1966) and the action hero was born with Dharmendra !
The set of actors, directors, producers, banners and even the audience was fixed for such films. Certain theaters were earmarked to exhibit such films in every city and small town. Some heroes of these action films, later on, became directors for such movies e.g. Majnu, Kamran, Daljit, John Cavas etc. ‘Baghi Sardar’ (1956) was also directed by Majnu, who started his talkie film career with a parody film ‘Majnu’ (1935). Though his original name was Harold Lewis, he was branded as Majnu and he too continued with this name.
MAJNU – Harold Lewis was a Punjabi Christian. He was born on 2-11-1913. It is said that before joining films, Harold had worked in circus as a joker. He acted in 3 Silent films, including ‘Flames Of Flesh’ (1930).
He was the childhood friend of Roop K Shorey. When Shorey wanted to make his second film, he chose Harold as the hero. Majnu was introduced as a leading man opposite Shyama Zutshi by producer/director Roop K Shorey in film ‘Majnu’ (1935) — a musical comedy satirizing the old story of Laila Majnu, produced, directed and shot in Lahore with Ghulam Haider as music director. With daring motorbike stunts and special effects, audiences were thrilled at the sight of Majnu strapped on the railway tracks by the villain.
The film was a success and RK Shorey repeated Majnu as the leading man in his next film, ‘Tarzan Ki Beti’ (1938). ‘Tarzan Ki Beti’ was hailed as the best jungle picture ever produced in India at the time. Filmed in the snowy Himalayas, the film topped its predecessor in its action sequences and placed Punjab on the entertainment map of India and the world.
Majnu appeared in almost all of Shorey’s films. He was also doing films with other producers. In 1942 he did a double role in ‘Nishani’ and in 1943 he directed his first film ‘Paapi’. Shorey also gave him a film ‘Badnami’ (1946) for direction and it was here that Majnu met IS Johar who wrote the story and dialogues of ‘Badnami’.
Majnu paired with IS Johar in ‘Ek Thi Ladki’ (1949), the debut film of Johar. Later they made a comedy pair in 10 films, including the hit ‘Hum Sab Chor Hain’ (1956). His last film with Johar was ‘Akalmand’ (1966).
Majnu acted in 77 films. His first film was ‘Majnu’ (1935) and his much delayed and released last film was ‘Shri Krishna Bhakti’ (1973). He acted in many Punjabi films also. He directed 8 films including ‘Paapi’ (1943), ‘Badnami’ (1946), ‘Son Of Alibaba’ (1955), ‘Tatar Ka Chor’ (1955), ‘Malika’ (1956), ‘Basre Ki Hoor’ (1956), ‘Baghi Sardar’ (1956), and his last film – ‘Chandu’ (1958).
Harold Lewis aka Majnu died on 26-3-1974.
The cast of this film consisted of Daljit, Chitra, Majnu, Ameeta, Amarnath, Prithvipal, Shaikh, Helen, Kammo, Satish Batra, Ramesh Thakkar, Shakuntala, Kanchanmala, Jugal Kishore etc. The music for this film was given by composer BN Bali. He was one of those small time composers, who got only the B and C grade films. First of all, let us know who this BN Bali is. There was yet another composer Bali, in the early era of Hindi films – HCBali or Harishchandra Bali (20-3-1906 to 24-6-1976), the expert classical singer who changed into a successful composer is credited with discovering KL Saigal in the early 30s.
BN Bali or Baldev Nath Bali too was a good singer and was a composer restricted to mostly religious or low budget films. He gave music from ‘Bedard’ (1949) up to ‘Do Dilwaale’ (1973), a total of 24 films, including one unreleased film ‘Bahut Door’ (1940s). He also gave music to a Haryanvi film in 1973. Though he composed music with a variety, somehow he lacked what it takes to make it to the Big league. On the contrary, BN Bali is known for copying the popular tunes of other composers blatantly.
“Jab Un Ka Khayal Aata Hai”, sung by Rafi in ‘Pehla Pehla Pyar’ was a copy of Rafi’s “Jin Raaton Mein Neend Ud Jaati Hai” by Hansraj behl. “Sapne Meine Saiyan Tum Aaya Na Karo” – Asha / Manna Dey song was a true copy of OP Nayyar’s “Ek Pardesi Mera Dil Le Gaya”, and “Tu Us Ka Kar Bhala” – Rafi in ‘Raja Vikram’ sang the same “Bhagwaan” tune as in “O Duniya Ke Rakhwaale” etc.
Today’s song also resembles some song, but I am unable to recollect exactly. If some reader recognizes the original song, please mention as your comment here.

Today’s song is from film Golden Eyes alias Secret Agent 077 – 1968. The film was made by Madan Chitra. Its director was Kamal Sharma and the music was by B N Bali aka Baldev Nath Bali. The songs were written by Shevan Rizvi. The cast included Shailesh kumar, Mumtaz, Asit Sen, Ulhas,Rajan Haksar Shaikh, Jeevan kala, Helen and a host of other actors.
This was a film which was supposed to be a detective story, with a secret agent having an ID number 077 – a la James Bond ! This film came in the wake of the wave created by one of India’s most successful Secret Agent films in Hindi, featuring the Jumping jack-Jeetendra ( with Trade mark White shoes), which was film Farz-1967. But the comparison , rather similarity ends here only, as far as film Golden Eyes is concerned.
Perhaps, our readers may be wondering as to why have I suddenly changed the track and jumped to talk about an obscure film like Golden Eyes-68 ! About a week ago, I received an E mail query from one of my old friends, inquiring if there were 2-3 artistes with the name of Sailesh, who was a singer, actor and MD ? I routinely get many such queries and I try to answer all of them promptly. In this case, I knew what the problem was. “Sailesh” was a case of ‘Same name Confusion’. I was quite amused, because in my immediate last post, I had discussed a case of SNC and now this case has come up.
I sent my detailed reply to the friend, but thought of writing a post here, so that one more SNC name will be cleared. That is the reason, I selected today’s film song, because in this film the Hero was Shailesh kumar. Yes, there were 2 artistes in Hindi films with the similar name Sailesh. One was Sailesh Mukherjee, who was an actor, singer and a MD and the other was Shailesh Kumar who was only an actor.
In case of artistes before 50’s, getting information was sometimes very difficult. At times, we had to wait for months and years till we hit upon some information source. getting in touch with a close relative of that artiste also solved the problem. But not always. I came across few cases, where even the son or the daughter of the artistes did not know much about the Film career of their father. For example, with great difficulty, I located the address of the daughter of comedian Mirza Musharraf in Mumbai. When I actually visited her, with prior appointment, for an interview, i found that she did not know much about Mirza’s film activity and that she was of no use to me. On the contrary, the daughter of actor singer Parshuram, had all the information, photos, paper cuttings etc. about her father.
In this case, I had a contact with Sailesh Mukherjee’s daughter in law, who gave me all information about what he did after leaving films and the family details. So, first here is information on Sailesh Mukherjee, which is updated with new additions on his post- film life.
Born on 3rd June 1926 in Calcutta, Sailesh Mukherjee completed his Matriculation and came to Bombay in 1946 to become a Music Director. He met Anil Biswas-also from Bengal- and got an opportunity to sing in film Milan-1946. That is how his singing started and he sang in films like Andhon ki Duniya-47 and Vanvasi-48,Aaag-48 (2 songs),Anmol Moti-49 with Shamshad,The last Message-49 with Uma Devi,
Deepak-51 with Uma Devi,Suhag Sindoor-53,Samaj-54 with Asha.
In Andolan-51 he sang ‘Vande Matharam’ with Manna Dey,Parul Ghosh and Sudha malhotra.
He last sang in Naya qadam-58.
His dream of becoming a MD was still not coming through,Finally he became a Music Director ,a joint one with Suresh kumar-in film Suhag Sindoor-1953. Even in this film, his partner made him sing 2 songs, under his baton !
Anyway, later Shailesh gave music to Parichay-54 and Savera, in 1958. While recording songs for Parichay,Shailesh played Tabla himself in all songs. In film Savera his songs became very popular. Songs like “Chhuppa chhuppi Aagad Baagad jaayi re” by Lata and Manna Dey, ” Nadiya ka pani” by Lata and “Jane na,Jane na” by Geeta were specially became hits.
Inexplicably, despite good and hit songs,he stopped getting any more films, either as a Music Director or as a singer. So Shailesh changed his gear once again and he became an Actor. First he acted in film Bandish-55 in the name of ‘Sailesh’. Then he became Hero in ” Miya bibi raazi”-1960, ” Pyar ki Pyas”-1961 and ” Monica”-1962 (UR). As a Hero he had taken a new name SHRIKANT GAURAV. The films did not click.
Music was his passion. He was a multi talented man. Later on he became an Interior Designer and prospered. In addition, he used to compere a programme in Calcutta wherein he would interview all the leading top artist of Calcutta e.g Uttam Kumar etc which was sponsored by Horlicks. He had designed Mala sinha’s bungalow too. The first recording studio at Natraj for Shakti Samanta was designed by him. He used to fly to Calcutta to interview Bengali film stars. Since he had a very good voice and a great command and knowledge about Bangla literature he would lend his voice for documentaries too. He was very passionate about nature and gardening hence he had bought 11 acres of land in Karjat. He used to have regular sessions of his songs at his farmhouse. He used to sing Madhushala with lots of passion. Rabindra Sangeet was his favorite.
Sailesh Mukherjee died somewhere in 1998.
Now let us know about the Same name Shailesh Kumar. His real name was Shambhunath Purohit. He was born on 21-3-1939 at Jodhpur, in a rich family with lot of property. He was handsome and six feet tall. Once he came to Bombay and went to see the shooting of a film. The producer director Ratibhai Punatar offered him a role in the film, but he declined. Later on he completed a course of acting in Filmalaya Acting School.
In 1960, he came to Bombay with just Rs. 75 with him. He used to sleep in the office of a Jodhpur businessman and took rounds of studios for work. Same time Dharmendra was also looking for work. They became friends. However it was Shailesh, who got the first break when he worked in film Nai Maa-1960. Then he was selected for a major role by producer director Sadashiv Row kavi, for his film ‘Bhabhi ki Chudiyan’-1961.( This was a remake of the hit Marathi film “Vahininchya bangdya” ( ?????????? ???????? )-53. A Telugu remake also was made as “Vadina Gari gajulu”-55). This film became popular in Hindi. Row kavi had made a 3 film cotract with Shailesh. The second film was Begana in 1963.
Shailesh did many films from good banners, as Hero and side Hero. he worked in 25 films, but somehow, in spite of acting in good films, with good directors and banners, his luck waned and the flow of films weakened. He managed to do some B and C grade films. His friend Dharmendra also got a break same time, but he rose very high in the industry.
After 1977, Shailesh suffered from a serious ailment of Thyroid gland and he had to take treatment in Tata Hospital. A rumour spread that he had Cancer and films stopped completely. In 1978, he returned to Jodhpur, never to return again to Bombay. He died on 21-4-2017, at the age of 78 years. He left behind him wife Pushpa and a son and a daughter. His last film was Ooperwala jaane-1977. He did 25 films+ 5 UR films.
During his career, Shailesh kumar acted along with Top class actors like Manoj kumar, Sanjiv kumar, Ashok kumar, Randhir kapoor, Balraj Sahani, Dharmendra,Sohrab Modi, Raaj kumar etc, big Heroines like Mumtaj, Rekha, Tanuja, Meena kumari etc, big directors and big banners. However all this did not help him and he remained a side actor only. His health also restricted his career. This is Luck !
Today’s song is sung by Usha Balsavar and Mahendra kapoor with chorus. The music for this film was given by composer B.N.Bali. He was one of those small time composers, who got only the B and C grade films. First of all,let us know who this B N Bali is. There was yet another composer Bali,in the early era of Hindi films. H.C.Bali or Harishchandra Bali(20-3-1906 to 24-6-1976),the expert classical singer who changed into a successful composer is credited with discovering K L Saigal in the early 30s.
B N Bali or Baldev Nath Bali too was a good singer and was a composer restricted to mostly religious or low budget films. He gave music from Bedard-1949 up to Do Dilwale-1973, a total of 24 films, including one unreleased film-Bahut Door (40s). He also gave music to a Haryanvi film in 1973.Though he composed music with a variety, somehow he lacked what it takes to make it to the Big league. On the contrary,B N Bali is known for copying the popular tunes of other composers blatantly.
‘Jab un ka khayal aata hai’-sung by Rafi in Pahla pehla pyar was a copy of Rafi’s ‘Jin raaton me neend ud jaati hai’ by Hansraj behl.
‘Sapne me saiyan tu aaya na karo’-Asha/manna Dey song was a true copy of O P Nayyar’s ‘ Ek pardesi mera dil le gaya’
‘Tu us ka kar bhala’ Rafi in Raja Vikram sang the same “Bhagwaan’ tune as in ” O duniya ke rakhwaale’ etc. etc.
With today’s song, singer Usha Balsavar makes her Debut on the Blog.

Those who have followed cricket for as long as I have, old time cricket followers may recall that test cricket centuries used to be quite rare. One test Indian batsman managed to score one test century in one test series then it waas considered a major cricketing achievement. One Indian cricketer scoring more than one test century in a test series was a rarity. It was quite a rarity indeed when Sunil Gavaskar scored as many as four test centuries in one test series, and that too his debut series.
It was three years later that Gavaskar would score his next test century in 1974. After that he did not look back snce and went on to make a record breaking 34 test centuries. Subsequently we have another little master, namely Sachin Tendulkar who rewrote that hrecord by scoring more than 50 test centuries and more than one hundred internationa centuries.
In olden days, we often found batsmen batting quite slowly and taking almost one full day to score a century. Mudassar Nazar of Pakistan took 557 minutes to score a test century in 1977-78 against England. He faced 419 balls to reach his century. In contrast, we had someone like Virender Sehwag who scored a triple century against South Africa in 278 deliveries.
We in this blog also regularly score centuries of posts. We have had 146 such centuries so far. quite a few of these centuries have been Sehwag like when 100 posts were completed in 16 days or even less. Such fast centuries have been described as Sehwag like by our regulars- such as Raja.
On the other end of the scale, sometimes our centuries have been painfully slow, like Chris Tavare or Mudassar Nazar. We “fondly” remember both because they often found it easy to showcase their “talent” against India.
This post is the 14700th song post for the blog or in other words this post marks the 147th century for the blog. This century has come at a Mudassar Nazar like rate. It has taken us as many as 53 days to reach this century.
This song is a rare song from “Fariyaadi”(1953).
“Fariyaadi”(1953) was produced and directed by Habib Sarhadi for Habib Productions, Bombay. This “social” movie had Rehman, Shakuntala, Mirza Musharraf, Wazir Mohammad Khan, Ramesh Thakkar, Parvati Devi, H Prakash, Devraj, Sadiq, Krishn, Chaandni, Qamar, Jankidas, Shanta Kunwar, Manju, Minni etc in it.
The movie had eight songs in it. Two songs from the movie has been covered in the past.
This song, the third song from “Fariyaadi”(1953) to appear in the blog is sung by Rafi. Muzaffar Orkazai is the lyricist. Music is composed by B N Bali.
This song is a rare song, that few people may have heard before. And we have chosen this song as the 14700thsong for a special reason. This song happens to be the 29th century of Rafi in the blog. In other words, Rafi now has as many as 2900 songs in the blog, just 100 songs short of the magical 3000 songs mark.
Instead of taking more time than what has already been consumed while reching this century, I decided to just get on with this century without much fanfare so that we can concentrate of future posts. So here is this post that combines blog century number 147 with Rafi century number 29.
So here we are, to yet another landmark, without much fanfare. I take this opportunity to thank one and all for their support and encouragement. We have come a long way and we still have lots of songs yet to be covered. This post gives us an opportunity to take fresh guard and get down to the task of covering more songs from the teasure of HFM.
Song-Jal jal ke shama ki tarah fariyaad na karna (Fariyaadi)(1953) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Muzaffar Orkazai, MD-B N Bali
Lyrics
