If one take a look at the films made in the golden era of Hindi films, one notices that many mythological movies were made during those decades. This trend continued to some extent even in the decade of seventies. However, after mid-seventies or by early eighties, mythological movies have become conspicuous by their absence.

Today’s song is from the movie ‘Basant Panchami-1956’. It was directed by Jayant Desai for ‘Hemlata Pictures’. Jayant Desai was also the producer of this movie.

HFGK Vol-III (1951-1960) mentions ‘Basant Panchami-1956’ as a devotional or ‘bhakti pradhaan’ movie. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 24.07.1956. The cast of this movie included Nirupa Roy, Anant Kumar, Jeevan, S.N. Tripathi, Radhakishan, Yashodhara Katju, Niranjan Sharma, Kumkum, Babu Raje, Charubala, Anand Joshi, Sukumar, Dubey, Uma Dutt, Naazi, Shri Bhagwan and others.

Today’s song is from the movie ‘Dashehraa-1956’. This is a rare song which has been made available more than a year back on internet. Regulars on this blog would have noted that there were many songs that were considered as ‘not traceable’ or were hitherto unavailable on internet are coming up gradually in recent years or more precisely in last couple of years. During the ‘regulars meet at Mumbai’ in 2023 I had made this observation during discussions about such ‘untraceable’ songs. On this blog our senior Shree Sudhir jee had taken up a series for the ‘missing films’ of the decade of ‘sixties’ earlier. At that time only one song from such movies (around hundred in numbers) was dug up and posted. I have noted that for all such movies now their other songs have also come up and posted either by music companies or passionate music lovers. This is ultimately going to increase the number of songs available with us and in turn reducing the number of songs that were considered as lost or un-traceable.

Today’s song is the last song from the film Guru Ghantal-1956.

We got Independence in 1947 and the most delighted industry in India was the Film Industry. The reasons were simple.

Some reasons were….
1. Unjustified restrictions on the storylines were now removed.
2. Stories and songs would be free from any constraints.
3. Raw Film prices would be controlled and its availability assured.
4. No force on making ‘ War Effort’ (propaganda) films anymore.
5. An Independent union of filmmakers, without Government intervention was now possible.
6. More facilities for the industry could be expected. etc etc.

Today’s song is from the film Guru Ghantal-1956. This is a very out of the way and uncommon title for a film. In 1937 also there was a film of the same title. When I was writing a post on a song from that film, a few years ago, I first encountered this word. I found out the meaning of this word then. If you separate the 2 parts of this composite word, you will get separate meanings like Guru=Teacher and Ghantal=Big sounding bell. However, together this word has a totally different meaning. It means a Cheater, a person who seems simple but is a person with bad intention of cheating !

Today’s song is from the film Zindagi ke mele-1956.

This was a social film having an ordinary story, without any famous or top star. The only good thing about this film was its Music Director – Chitragupt, the king of melody. If at all the producer had got back all his money invested, he should be thankful to Chitragupt for his music, otherwise nothing special was there in this film.
