In September 1988, Doordarshan National channel started telecasting what was to become the stupendously popular serialization of the renowned epic ‘Mahabharat’. And for a period of almost two years (94 Sundays), an audience of almost 20 crore Indians would be glued to the TV sets. And in every episode, the audience was greeted with the rendition of the title song and shlokas, and the every episode was bid good bye with a verse that summarized the story, the state of affairs, and the learnings from the particular episode. These opening and ending title song and verses came through the telecast riding on the booming voice of the one and the only singer who could have made the impact with his voice. His rendition of the opening word ‘Mahaaa-Bhaaarat’ is now etched in the aural memory of the viewers. The voice that had the power to shake a thunder. Mahendra Kapoor – the only voice that could make it happen.

The songs written by him were a rage in the 70s and 80s. Sample the following – “Rotey Huye Aate Hain Sab, Hansta Hua Jo Jaayegaa. . .”(‘Muqaddar Ka Sikandar’, 1978), “Maano To Main Ganga Maa Hoon, Naa Maano Te Behtaa Paani”(‘Ganga Ki Saugandh’, 1978), “O Khaike Paan Barnaaras Waala”(‘Don’,1978), “Pag Ghunghroo Baandh Meera Naachi Thi”(‘Namak Halaal’, 1982), “Jahaan Chaar Yaar Mil Jaayen” (‘Sharaabi’, 1984), “Gori Hain Kalaayi’aan, Tu La De Mujhe Hari Hari Choodiyaan” (‘Aaj Ka Arjun’, 1990). And not that the 60s was bereft of his creations. The rustic and earthy “Pipraa Ke Patwaa Sarikhe Doley Manwaa” (‘Godaan’, 1963), or velvety romanticism of “Bahaaro Thaam Lo Ab Dil, Mera Mehboob Aata Hai”(‘Namaste ji’, 1965), or the delicately sensuous “Aap Ke Haseen Rukh Pe Aaj Nayaa Noor Hai”(‘Bahaaren Phir Bhi Aayengi’, 1966), or pensive sounds of “Aaj Tumse Door Ho Kar, Aise Royaa Mera Pyaar”(‘Ek Raat’, 1967), or the fun filled song of intoxication “Bina Badraa Ke Bijuriyaa Kaise Chamke”(‘Bandhan’, 1969) – endearing gems all, spread out over a career that lasted over four decades.
The pen that crafted these timeless verses laid itself to rest with the passing away of Laal ji Pandey, better known to music lovers as Anjaan –this day sixteen years ago (03 Sep, 1997). And a befitting day to celebrate the 100th song written by him to make it on this blog.

We have discussed over two thousand songs of Rafi in this blog which adds up to just over 40 % of all the songs that he has sung in Hindi movies. Many of these songs are extremely well known songs, but at the same time we have also come across some totally unheard of songs. It no longer surprises me or regulars of this blog when we come across Rafi songs that we had never heard before.

After the eid song with “E” with Lata Mangeshkar and Rafi Sahab, let us move on to ‘F’. Easier said than done as my troubles start here, there being very few song starting with this alphabet. And among those few a good percentage of songs are already posted, like ‘ fariyaad na karna haay kahin fariyaad na karna ‘, ‘falsafa pyaar ka tum kya jaano’, ‘falak bola zameen boli’ etc.
