Today’s song is from the film Kundan-1955.
The film was made by Minerva Movietone, produced and directed by Sohrab Modi. I liked Sohrab Modi very much. Not only because he could deliver long dialogues forcefully, but because his life story was very inspiring. In India there were few other filmmakers and directors who handled topics normally considered Taboo by others and some filmmakers who never hesitated to make films on unusual themes, when the trend was to make entertaining, musical and romantic films. Sohrab Modi was perhaps the only filmmaker who made films to expose the social ills through the cinematic medium from his first film.

Today’s song is from the costume/stunt film Raj Darbar-1955. It was a partially coloured film. The film was directed by Balwant Bhatt and the music was by the king of melody-Chitragupt. Surprisingly, there was a duet song by Kishore kumar in this film. Normally he was not seen singing in this type of film. The cast of the film was Ranjan, Nirupa Roy, Ishwar Lal, B.M.Vyas, Asha Mathur, Ranjit Kumari, Azeem and others.

Today’s song is from a Costume drama film Naqab-1955.
This was yet another film weaving a beaten-track story of the King – Queen and the evil Vazir. Initially I was quite amused with such stories and was keen to see these films. Slowly and in due course as I expanded my world, I started getting weary of such set stories. The basic plot used to be the same, only the names of places and the characters and actors used to be different. I guess, even the filmmakers got tired with these stories. In reality, the generation which enjoyed such child pleasing stories was receding in the background with the growing age and the next generation was eager to broaden its visions with different Genres of films like Comedy, Real life adventure, Religion, Love stories, Musicals, Historicals and what not !

Today’s song is from an inspirational religious film Jagadguru Shankaracharya-1955.
In Mahabharat, there is a dialogue between Lord Shri Krishna and Arjun. The legend says that when Kauravas and Pandavas stood opposite each others for a war on Kurukshetra, Dhritrashtra, the blind father of Kauravas asked Sanjay- who had the divine power of seeing the war at Kurukshetra- to describe him the war happenings. Sanjay starts and in the course of his reporting, the entire Geeta too is narrated.

This film was made by the well known Filmistan studios. It was directed by Vithaldas Panchotiya and the Music Director was Ravi Shankar, for whom it was his only second movie as an independent composer. Today’s song – it is a Bhajan – is from the film Patit Paawan-(1955).
The “Same Name Confusion” is applicable not only to artistes and others working in films, but it fully applies to Film Titles as well. In fact, film titles are more of a culprit than the people working in films, because the incidence of repetitions is several times more in film titles. A field where the Same Name film is made in 7 different years is more dangerous than the same names of artistes, which may not be more than 3 or 4 operating in the same period to cause confusion. That is the reason a film should not be mentioned without its year in which it is censored/ released to avoid confusion.
