Today’s song is a devotional cum philosophical song from the movie ‘Bhakta Dhrvu-1957’. I never came across this song earlier and I have no recollections of having listened to it yet this song seems to be familiar to me. The composition by Basant Prakash is very nice and Asha Bhonsle has sung this song so well that listening to it becomes a divine experience.

The cast of this movie had Nirupa Roy, Manhar Desai, Prem Adib, Shanta Apte, Malay Sarkar, Sapru, Pande, Sangeeta, Narbada Shankar, Hansraj, Sudheer, Moni Chatterjee and others. ‘Chandi Pujaa or Chandi Poojaa-1957’ was passed by Censor Board on 19.07.1957. Geet Kosh Vol-III (1951-1960) mentions in the foot-note on the page of this movie that this movie ‘Chandi Pujaa’ was the last movie of actress Shanta Apte.

The story of this and other such same titled films was from a popular stage drama of the early 1900s. There were many versions of the story with small and big variations. The Parsi Urdu Theatre’s dramas were penned by Agha Hashra Kashmiri, known as Shakespeare of India. The Parsi Gujarati plays were written by various authors. Syed Yawar Aliu, a student of Dagh Dehlvi penned the script for the Moon Parsi Theatre. The Alfred drama company had their own version of this story.
