I find Hindi films with a broader genre of road trips (or journey in any mode) quite interesting. In such films, events happen during the journeys which usually culminate into sub-genres such as romance, comedy, social drama, suspense thriller etc. In this broad category, I have watched films like ‘Nau Do Gyaarah’ (1957), ‘Caravan’ (1971), ‘Bombay To Goa’ (1972), ‘Dil Hai Ki Maanta Naheen’ (1991),‘Dil Chaahta Hai’ (2001), ‘Jab We Met’ (2007), ‘Zindagi Na Milengi Dobaara’ (2011), ‘Finding Fanny’ (2014), ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ (2015), ‘Piku’ (2015), ‘Dhanak’ (2015), ‘Qareeb Qareeb Single’ (2017) and many more. ‘Kaarwaan’ (2018) is my recent addition in watching films in the genre of road trips.

The film’s title, ‘Fanney Khan’ (2018) with its star cast created interest in me when the film was formally announced. Just as the name ‘Natwarlal’ is identified with a conman, ‘Fanney Khan’ is identified with a man who boasts of his high achievements but in reality, others do not consider him as such. However, in the teaser of ‘Fanney Khan’ (2018), the meaning of ‘Fanney Khan’ has been explained in the context of the film as ‘someone who is an artist, a musician, a dreamer or even a complete idiot’. My interest in the film waned on reading the adverse reviews of the film after the film got a theatrical release on August 4, 2018. After a gap of nearly six years of the film’s release, I am liking a couple of songs from this film. So, I watched the film on a video sharing platform. It is nearly six months after I watched the film, I thought of writing an article on the film covering one of the songs I liked.

The box office success of ‘Dam Laga Ke Haisha’ (2015), a low budget film made under the banner of Yash Raj Films with Maneesh Sharma and Sharat Katariya being the producer and writer-director respectively, paved the way for this combination to make another low budget film, ‘Sui Dhaaga’ (2018) for Yash Raj Films. The cast included Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma in lead roles supported by Raghubir Yadav, Yamini Das, Sawan Tank, Manukirti Pahwa, Namit Das etc. The film was majorly shot in Chanderi (Madhya Pradesh) and around Delhi. Chanderi is famous for weaving silk, cotton and zari work. The film was released in theatres on September 28, 2018.

Today (11 may 2022) is a very important day in Indian history. To my mind, 11 may 1998,( that was 24 years ago) was as important an event in modern Indian history as 15 August 1947 and 26 January 1950. If we got political freedom on 15 august 1947 and democratic republic on 26 january 1950, then 11 may 1998 was the day when India proclaimed independence from the bullying of foreign powers. It was on this day that India announced itself as a self respecting country that would no longer allow itself to be browbeaten by others.

Today (14 July 2020) is the 101st birth anniversary of Sagat Singh (14 july 1919- 26 September 2001). He had nothing to do with HFM, but I am discussing him today. why ? Because I think that he deserves to be known to all of us. His name should occupy a pride of place among the great sons of India.

Today is 11 may 2020. In my opinion, 11 may is one of the most important dates in the history of modern India. It is on this date that India threw away the self imposed shackles of being an apologetic, suffering from inferiority complex, indecisive and weak nation which was being regarded as a pushover by one and all. Even tiny countries like Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh were beginning to mess with India with impunity.

Today’s song is from film 102 Not Out-2018.
Readers who identify me as a writer on old films, may be shocked, as I am about to write on a New Era song, as new as not even 1 year old ! But honestly, when I accidentally bumped into this song’s credit, which said that Amitabh Bachhan was the Music Composer of this song, I was myself surprised. Out of curiosity, I found out that song on You Tube and heard/saw it. Frankly, I was not only impressed but even I liked the song. Of course, much of the liking came from seeing the wonderful video of the song- which is just superb !

What kind of relationship must one have with their country? This is a question I have been pondering lately. There is no doubt one feels a sense of kinship and pride for the perseverance and accomplishments and bravery its people show on a near everyday basis. But then aren’t all these accomplishments a result of someone questioning some kind of status quo that existed in this country.
