Hindi Songs from Bangla Films -17
——————————————————
Bengali film industry has given us many eminent film directors. If I list the names in chronological order, the first name that comes to my mind is Debaki Kumar Bose who had directed classic films like ‘Chandidas’ (1932), ‘Puran Bhagat’ (1933), ‘Vidyapati’ (1937), ‘Nartaki’ (1940) etc. Next in line is P C Barua known for classic films like ‘Devdas’ (1935). ‘Mukti’ (1937), ‘Jawaab’ (1942) etc. Then we have Nitin Bose, Phani Majumdar, Bimal Roy etc. In respect of parallel cinema, names of Satyajit Roy, Mrinal Sen, Ritwik Ghatak, Tapan Sinha, Rituparno Ghosh etc are well known not only in India but also internationally. This list is not exhaustive as their names came to my mind mainly because they were associated with Hindi films.

Bengal enjoyed a dominant position in Hindi cinema till the 1950s. Its meaningful, entertaining films as well as music-Film and the Non Film music both, ruled the roost, from the early 30s. In this conquest of the East, the Lion’s share was that of NEW THEATRES-set up and owned by B N Sircar. New Theatres was not just a production company, but it was an Institution and a school for developing artistes in the 30s and the 40s.

On a clear night, one can see a million stars in the sky. While there are the bright and shining stars that will readily draw the viewer’s gaze, the sky is full of more distant dots of light that twinkle with a dimmer light. As the gaze traverses across the boundless skies, one realizes that the sky is so full with dimmer stars that are content to shine with lesser light. For every bright and luminous star, there are a score of dimmer stars that dot the tapestry of heavens, completing the intricate design of the skies. Without these less luminous partners, the sky would look barren, as it does on the nights when there is smog in the air. The viewer’s gaze can then make out just a handful of the more luminous stars, while the spread of the sky is simply an austere shade of grey, bare and lonely.

The heydays of New Theatres lasted about one and a half decades, from its foundation in 1931 to around mid 1940s. The war and the famine drastically impacted the film industry in Calcutta. Majority of the artists migrated to Bombay, and the production houses in Calcutta suffered on account of that. Given the circumstances, New Theatres was also impacted. We do not see any significantly notable films come from that banner after the mid 1940s.
