On a clear night, one can see a million stars in the sky. While there are the bright and shining stars that will readily draw the viewer’s gaze, the sky is full of more distant dots of light that twinkle with a dimmer light. As the gaze traverses across the boundless skies, one realizes that the sky is so full with dimmer stars that are content to shine with lesser light. For every bright and luminous star, there are a score of dimmer stars that dot the tapestry of heavens, completing the intricate design of the skies. Without these less luminous partners, the sky would look barren, as it does on the nights when there is smog in the air. The viewer’s gaze can then make out just a handful of the more luminous stars, while the spread of the sky is simply an austere shade of grey, bare and lonely.

Such is the sky of the world of cinema too. The brighter stars more readily catch the attention, but the tapestry is never complete without the lesser luminaries that have their place. Their brightness may be lesser, but it is their presence that fulfills the completion of the skies.

Asit Baran, a lesser heard voice in the era of Saigal Sb, KC Dey, Pankaj Mullick, Surendra and Pahadi Sanyal. A voice that stepped in to complement the void as the center of film making and film stars shifted from Calcutta to Bombay, in the first half of 1940s. An actor singer who was introduced into New Theaters by Pahadi Sanyal, made his debut with the 1942 film ‘Saugandh’. His first solo from that film “Ab Aayee Basant Bahaar” is an impressive effort. A voice that reminds the listeners of the sounds of Jagmohan in parts, and even that of Pankaj Babu himself. Although Asit’s voice never quite touched the magnificence and depth of these stalwart singers. Still, there is an attraction to this voice that will bind you and make you remember.

There is very little information available on this singer. The best tribute that I could find is here on AK ji’s ‘Songs Of Yore’ website.

This wonderful gem of a song is from the 1949 film ‘Manzoor’ from New Theatres, Calcutta. The film is directed by Subodh Mitra. Asit Baran has played the lead role in this film opposite to Bharati. The rest of the cast of actors includes Chhabi Biswas, Chandrawati, Bhupendra Kapoor, Latika, Aditya Ghosh, Asita Bose, Tulsi Chakravarty, Manorama, Jharna, Master Khurshid, Ram Pyari, RP Kapoor, Prem Kumari, and Shaukat Shah etc. Of the six songs in this film, five are written by Pt Bhushan and one is from the pen of Prakash. This song is written by Pt Bhushan. Music is composed by Pankaj Mullick. Although only the audio is available, it is clear that this song is picturized on Asit Baran himself.

This film makes a debut on this blog today. The song itself is a sheer delight as the protagonist tells of the starting emotions of love, as a certain special person with playful glances, had made way into his heart and now seems to reside there. The free flowing verses are such a delight to hear. Lovely composition by Pankaj Babu, and a very enchanting rendering by Asit Baran. Listen and enjoy.

Song-Matwaale nainon se ras bheene bainon se (Manzoor)(1949) Singer-Asit Baran, Lyrics-Pt Bhushan, Md-Pankaj Mullick

Lyrics

matwaale nainon se
ras bheene bainon se
wo dil ko zaraa sa chhoo gayi
wo mann mein aa kar bas gayi ee ee
matwaale nainon se

mann ke.. ay.. ay.. ay..
mann ke andhiyaare koney mein
us ne bijli chamkaayi
hirday ka saagar dol uthha
aankhon mein masti chhaayi
wo aa ke
wo aa ke zaraa sa hans gayi ee ee
matwaale nainon se
wo dil ko zaraa sa chhoo gayi
ras bheene bainon se
matwaale nainon se
ras bheene bainon se

wo mann ke andar basne waali ee
paas rahe ya door rahe
main itne hi mein raazi hoon oon oon
dil us ke nashe mein choor rahe
nashe mein ae ae choor rahe
mann prem hindolay par jhoole
naache jhoome itraaye
jeevan ki
jeevan ki rangeeli bagiyaa mein
aasha ke phool khilaaye ae ae
mastaani adaaon se
sharmilee nigaahon se
wo prem ke bandhan kas gayi
wo dil ko zaraa sa chhoo gayi
wo aa ke zaraa sa hans gayi ee ee
matwaale nainon se
