Today’s song is from a ‘Milestone’ film Chandralekha-1948.

I call it a Milestone Film, because it was the pioneer film that started the south made dubbed, remade and independent Hindi films for the All India Hindi audience. What’s more, it happened at a time when the flow of such Hindi films made in the East- Calcutta- had diminished and after some time totally gave up the space to south made films.

Today’s song is from the film ‘Dhola Maru’ (1956).

Hindi cinema is famous for presenting love stories of different kinds, types, hue and color based on imaginary, stolen, copied, made up or borrowed stories which end up as happy, sad or unexpected results. Not only Hindi, but most other languages too do the same.

Today’s song is from the religious film ‘Kan Kan Mein Bhagwan’-1963.

This film was produced by Mahipatrai Shah, under the banner of “Roop kala pictures”. He is the same person who had also produced, along with his brother Anupchand Shah, the film “Begunah”-1957 under their banner Roop Kamal Chitra. These brothers were from Saurashtra in Gujarat. They had already produced three films, namely ‘Shri Vishnu Bhagwan’-1951, ‘Adhikar’-1954 and ‘Riyasat’-1955.

Today’s song is from a Costume film Roop Sundari-1964.

This routine ” King-Queen-Vazir” type C grade film was directed by Chandrakant (Gaur). His name is not very famous, but he was one of those artistes of the first generation of Hindi films, who was a multi-faceted person. He was an actor, producer, director, Lyricist and a music director. In the early phase of the Hindi films, being “a jack of all trades’ was a guarantee of a permanent job in a film studio and a sure way of survival with respect. I remember another such artiste – Badri prasad. He was an actor- first as a Hero and then as a character artiste, Producer, Director, lyricist, Singer, Music Director and also a Choreographer. (He was a Sanskrit scholar too and an author, according to his daughter). I remember his roles in films like ” Albela”-1951 and ” Hum sab chor Hai”-1956.

Mohan Choti, Ratnamala, Asit Sen, Jayshree T, Shammi, Vishwa Mehra, Neelam etc. As per IMDb, the film was in the making since 1968 with Sanjeev Kumar and Kanan Kaushal (who, at that time, were yet to get established as successful actors). The film got delayed and at one time it was almost shelved. It was only when Sanjeev Kumar became a star and Kanan Kaushal came into limelight with her box office hit film, ‘Jai Santoshi Mata’ (1975), the film was revived, reshot and released in August 1979. The film was dubbed in Gujarati also.

Today (25 March 2024) is the festival of Holi, the festival of colour.

The word Holi is derived from demoness Holika.

The tale of Holika and her relatives is quite interesting. According to legends, she was an Asuri who was the daughter of Kashyap and Diti. Rahu and Ketu were her sons.
