I have mentioned it many a timers that the golden era of Hindi movie music had great music coming from everywhere. Not only well known movies with well known composers, even C grade movies with lesser known composers were creating great music those days. Many of these lesser known songs and movies have been forgotten with time. Looking for these forgotten song and listening to them (often for the first time) is a highly rewarding experience.

Nirupa Roy is known among movie watchers as the actress playing long suffering mother of Amitabh Bachchan in several movies of 1970s. But that is not how she began her career. She was a lead actress in hindi movies for much of 1950s and 1960s, before age caught up with her and she began playing those Maa roles.

Reading the line of the lyrics “naazuk naazuk badan moraa” did not ring any bells for me, but when I listened to the song, then it rang began to ring quite loudly. I had listened to this song during my younger days, some four decades ago. And I was not aware of any details of this song. In fact I was nnot even aware of the lyrics of the song. I only had vague recollections of the catchy tune of this song.

Most Hindi movie songs last for three to four minutes, but the lonngest songs often last two and even three times the durations of the normal length songs. These long songs are mostly qawwaalis. The qawwalis may last considerably, but they hold the listeners spell bound with their lyrics.

I have posted many songs in this blog where the hero and heroine are going on a drive and the hero (if he is a singing type, viz Dev Anand) bursts into a song. Then we have cases of historical/ mythological movies where the duo are riding on a chariot. If the hero is a non-singing type (like Dara Singh) then the onus of singing falls on the tender shoulders of the heroine (typically Mumtaz).
