In my last article, I discussed the film, ‘Naache Naagin Baaje Been’ (1969) which was written and produced by Devi Sharma (19/10/2021 – 30/03/2010). I got acquainted with his name when I had watched his films, ‘Ganga Ki Laharen’ (1964) and ‘Gunaahon Kaa Devta’ (1967)” in my younger days. Meerut born Devi Sharma was a writer and got attracted to the glamour world of Hindi films. He shifted to Mumbai and debuted as a co-producer with Wasti for ‘Basre Ki Hoor (1956). His first independent film as a producer and writer under his banner, Janta Chitra was ‘Taxi Stand’ (1958). The next as a producer-writer was ‘Kaali Topi Laal Roomaal’ (1959).

Today’s song is from the film Talwar ka Dhani-1956.

TALWAR KA DHANI-1956 was a costume drama and also a stunt film. When I first went to see this film in its second run in 1960 or so, I thought that this must be based on the story of “King Arthur and his sword”, but I was mistaken. Probably the producers had not even heard who this Arthur was, and they based their story on Gujarat background. Appropriately, the hero was also Manhar Desai (real name Malcom Alfredo Desai, a Goan, from 3-8-17 to25-2-92), who was a Popular Hero in Gujarati and Mythological films those days.

“Naya Raasta”(1953) was based on Gujarati stage drama “Sarvoday” which was staged by Shri Desi Natak Samaj and it was extremely popular. Inspired by its popularity, it was made into a movie called “Naya Raasta”(1953) by producer and director Jayant Desai for Jayant Desai Films, Bombay. Mukesh and his Co-Singers –11

Having covered the songs of Mukesh under the composition of Usha Khanna, I was always curious to list the duets of Usha Khanna and Mukesh.

No, it is not just picking up the duets from the table in the above post as they also sang under other composers; albeit quite a few songs.

In this blog we have contributors who started watching movies in 1940s, some in 1950s, some in 1960s, some in 1970s and so on. When one reads their reminisceces about those days, we find that all these decades were vastly different from other decades. The movies made during any particular era catered to the then prevailing choices and preferences of the public. The genres of movies underwent change as time passed.

Today’s song is from the film ‘Naya Raasta’ (1953).

Today is 19th September, and this is my 14th post in this month already. Before this post, I had written 11 posts continually every day, but I had to break the marathon as the final work on my two new books came up and I had to attend to that.
