While doing preparatory work for the article on the film ‘Dahek’ (1999), I came across a few names of the films where the lovers commit suicide/or get killed as their parents/society were against their relationship. One of such films was ‘Ek Baar Chale Aao’ (1983), about which I was not aware of. Probably, the film may have received a lukewarm response from the cinema audience. The film had Farooque Shaikh and Deepti Naval in the lead roles. I have watched them in ‘Chasme Baddoor’ (1981), ‘Saath Saath’ (1982) and ‘Katha’ (1983). They had also worked together in films like’ Rang-Birangi’ (1983), ‘Kisi Se Na Kahna’ (1983) etc. With these films, they had become one of the popular lead pairs in Hindi films in the 1980s. Then, how is that the film under discussion was almost forgotten? I got the answer by watching the film.

‘Ek Baar Chale Aao’ (1983) was produced by Abdul Sattar Khan and was directed by Jagdish Sidana. The cast included Farooque Shaikh and Deepti Naval in the lead roles supported by Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Girish Karnad, Asrani, Nadira, Kajal Kiran, Lakshmi Chhaaya, Bharat Bhushan, Ratna Bhushan, Krishna Dhawan, Jankidas with Padma Khanna making a special appearance.

The gist of the story of the film is as under:

The opening scene of the film shows that the marriage ceremony of Dharam Das’s (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) sister (Padma Khanna) with Deen Dayal (Girish Karnad) is about to start. However, Deen Dayal walks out of the marriage celebrations because of the non-payment the dowry amount by the bride’s family. The bride commits suicide and her father, Narayan Das (Bharat Bhushan) dies of shock. Dharam Das blames Deen Dayal for this tragedy and vows to take revenge. In the meanwhile, Deen Dayal gets married to another girl.

More than two decades have passed. Dharam Das has become rich, and Din Dayal has become financially weak. Dharam Das’ son, Kamal (Farooque Sheikh) and Deen Dayal’s daughter, Gulab (Deepti Naval) happen to study in the same college. They fall in love with each other and intend to marry. When Kamal tells his father, Dharam Das about his intention to marry Gulab, he first refuses, because of the unfortunate events happened two-decade back. Afterwards, he agrees to the marriage proposal to settle his score with Deen Dayal with a sinister plan. Kamal and Gulab get married. However, on the marriage night, Kamal was nowhere to be seen as Dharam Das, in the pretext of some urgent business matter had sent Kamal out. To, Gulab, he says that Kamal has run away to get married to Priya (Kajal Kiran). Gulab is in a quandary as she cannot believe that Kamal will cheat her.

The next day, Dharam Das takes Gulab to her father’s house and demands a high amount of dowry to accept Gulab in his house. Deen Dayal is unable to pay the dowry amount. Kamal and Gulab are separated through the misunderstanding planted by Dharam Das. The matter comes to such an extent that Gulab agrees to sign the divorce paper. Deen Dayal arranges Gulab’s marriage to Madanlal (Asrani) who is ready to marry her without dowry with the hope that he will get Deen Dayal’s shop as a sole successor. On the other side, Dharam Das arranges Kamal’s marriage with Priya.

In the meanwhile, Priya comes to know about the impending marriage of Gulab with Madanlal. She meets Gulab and reveals the sinister plan of Dharam Das to separate Kamal from her. On the other hand, Kamal also comes to know about his father’s plan. He runs away from the marriage venue, picks up Gulab from her marriage venue and tries to run away. But mobs with laathis from both sides are after Kamal and Gulab to kill them. Ultimately, Kamal and Gulab see the futility of their escape from the laathi wielding mob and decide to commit suicide by jumping from a hillock into a river.

The film is a typical formula-based one – drama, romance, obstacles by the family, separation of lovers, some fights, and finally the elopement and suicide by lovers. Many of dialogues in the film are pedestrian which I have heard in other films quite often. While watching, the film does not create the same feeling as in ‘Ek Duje Ke Liye’ (1981) which was highly successful on the box office with, more or less, on the same theme. The saving grace of the film is the good performances of Farooque Sheikh and Deepti Naval with their on-screen chemistry.

The film has 7 songs written by Mohammed Iqbal Khan (4), Sameer (2) and Anjaan (1). All the songs were set to music by Chand Pardeshi. This was the first time when Anjaan and his son, Sameer worked together in a film as lyricist. I am presenting the first song from the film, ‘main hoon tere liye tu hai mere liye’ to appear on the Blog. The song is written by Anjaan and rendered by Asha Bhosle and Nitin Mukesh. The song is picturised on Farooque Shaikh and Deepti Naval.

The background to the song is that Deen Dayal (Girish Karnad) has arranged a match for his daughter, Gulab (Deepti Naval) and a prospective groom with his family is visiting the house. Gulab is not interested in the groom as she has already in love with Kamal (Farooque Shaikh) to whom she has promised to meet. In the park. Kamal is waiting for her, but she has not reached yet because she is held up in the house. In the meanwhile, Kamal starts imagining about Gulab which is presented by way of a song. There is also a short and sad version of this song in the film with different lyrics which is a solo rendition by Nitin Mukesh when Kamal and Gulab get separated. I did not find any audio or video clips of this version online.

Not much is known about music director, Chand Pardeshi except that his first film as a music director was ‘Banjaara’ (1960) in which the song, “chanda re mori patiyaan le jaa” became very popular. He has composed music for 9 films most of which are ‘B’ grade films. The film under discussion was his last released film. Chand Pardesi seems to be a well-respected music director as almost all the top playback singers of his time like Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi, Mukesh, Geeta Dutt, Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar, Manna Dey have rendered the songs under his baton.

Lyrics

meri taqdeer tu
teri taqdeer main
meri taqdeer tu
teri taqdeer main

main hoon tere liye
tu hai mere liye
main hoon tere liye
tu hai mere liye
hoke tujhse juda
jee sakoongi na main
hoke tujhse juda
jee sakoongi na main
hoke mujhse juda
tu bhi kaise jiye
main hoon tere liye
tu hai mere liye
main hoon tere liye
tu hai mere liye
hoke tujhse juda
jee sakoonga na main
hoke tujhse juda
jee sakoonga na main
hoke mujhse juda
tu bhi kaise jiye
main hoon tere liye
tu hai mere liye
o main hoon tere liye
tu hai mere liye

teri yaadon mein dhalti hai shaam-o-sahar
teri yaadon mein dhalti hai shaam-o-sahar
tan badan mein uthhe ik deewaani lahar
o tere khilte badan ki ye khusboo yahaan
tere khilte badan ki ye khusboo yahaan
saathh rehti hai main jab bhi jaaun jahaan
ik nasha dil le cha jaata hai bin piye
main hoon tere liye
tu hai mere liye
o main hoon tere liye
tu hai mere liye

tere kaajal si jab shaam dhalne lage
tere kaajal si jab shaam dhalne lage
waadiyon ki ye rangat badalne lage ae

milke mujhse bichhadne lage jab bhi tu
milke mujhse bichhadne lage jab bhi tu
ik andhera saa chhaane lage chaar su
aankhon mein jal uthhe pyaar ke sau diye
main hoon tere liye
tu hai mere liye
main hoon tere liye
tu hai mere liye

dil se ik pal nahin door jaata hai tu
dil se ik pal nahin door jaata hai tu
saans leti hoon to yaad aata hai tu u
jism do hain magar donon hain ek jaan
jism do hain magar donon hain ek jaan
main jahaan tu wahaan
tu jahaan main wahaan
saathh hi jeene marne ke waade kiye
main hoon tere liye
tu hai mere liye

main hoon tere liye
tu hai mere liye
hoke tujhse juda
jee sakoongi na main
hoke tujhse juda
jee sakoongi na main
hoke mujhse juda
tu bhi kaise jiye
main hoon tere liye
tu hai mere liye
main hoon tere liye
tu hai mere liye

main hoon tere liye
main hoon tere liye
main hoon tere liye
main hoon tere liye
main hoon tere liye
main hoon tere liye
