When I was growing up as a pre teenager in 1970s, I was into buying and reading all children’s magazines that were then published. It was in “Nandan” magazine that I read about Sitaara Devi. I did not take much interest in her nor was I aware about her except the vague information that she was a Kathak dancer. She was in her 50s at that time which was then considered old so natually I was not interested in knowing about an old lady. 🙂

Question-Answer (Sawaal-Jawaab) songs and its variant, teasing (Ched-Chaad) songs have a special place in Hindi films. These songs are generally duets of male and female voices and are my favourites in the genre of light songs. These songs are sometimes also composed in qawaali style. One can enjoy these songs doubly when the video clips of such songs are available and directors like Guru Dutt, Vijay Anand etc were involved in the picturisation of these songs.

KHUSHBOO (1954) was produced under the banner of Beautiful Pictures and was directed by Rana Indu Shamsher. The cast included Motilal, Shyama, Moti Sagar, Shakila, Kesri, Noor, S K Prem, Amina Bai, Radheshyam etc. I have no idea about the story of the film. I was aware about “Khushboo”(1976), but I came to know about the existence of “Khushboo”(1954) only after I got the mp3 clip of the song under discussion.

SASSI PUNNU (1946) was produced under the banner of Vaswani Art Productions and was directed by J P Advani. The starcast included Jairaj, Geeta Nizami, E Billimoria, Bibbo, Gope, Yashodara Katju, Narbada Shankar etc. There were 10 songs in the film, all penned by I C Kapoor which were set to music by Pandit Gobindram.
