Today, December 25, 2025, is the 10th Remembrance Day of Sadhana, the fashion icon of Hindi cinema in the 1960s. She was also called the ‘mystery girl’ because she acted in three mystery genre of films one after another. In her short filmy career of about 15 years, she had a high success ratio in terms of hit films. She worked with top directors like Bimal Roy, Raj Khosla, Yash Chopra, Hrishikesh Mukherjee and H S Rawail. Her co-stars included Dev Anand, Shammi Kapoor, Rajendra Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Raj Kumar, Sunil Dutt, Rajesh Khanna and Dharmendra. Sadhana came and conquered the Hindi film industry in the 1960s and by the end of 1970s, she virtually vanished from the film industry.

Today’s song is from a stunt film- Chaalbaaz-1958.
The film was produced by Balwant Bhatt and Ram Kamlani. It was directed by the veteran of such films- Nanabhai Bhatt. Music was by the melody maker- Chitragupta. 5 singers sang 7 songs, written by Anjum Jaipuri (2) and Prem Dhavan (5). The cast included Nirupa Roy, Jairaj,Nishi, K.N.Singh, Shammi, Cuckoo, David, Master Bhagwan, Moti (Horse) and Tiger (Dog) etc etc.
The title Chaalbaaz seems to be quite a favourite with filmmakers. Films with the same title were made in 1958, 69, 80, 89 and 2003. In addition there was Chaalbaaz Leader-70 and Chaalbaaz Haseena-2002 also.

The cast of the film was Mumtaz Shanti ( wife of Wali Saheb), Ashok Kumar, Mumtaz Ali, Samson, Maya devi, Neelam, Sultana, A. Shah and others. The story of Padmini is very well known and is available easily on the internet, hence I am not going into that.

Today’s song is from the film Aahuti-1950.
This unknown film was made by Sansar Movietone, Bombay. Produced by L.Shankar, it was directed by Kulbhushan. The story, screenplay and the dialogues were by a team of H.C.Jaiswal, G.Saran and L.Shankar. The music for the 12 songs of the film was given by D.C.Dutt. There is not much information available about D.C.Dutta, not even what the initials D.C. stand for.
All of us know that Lata Mangeshkar had to struggle very hard in her initial attempts to get into Playback singing in Hindi films. In her early struggle, 3 Duttas helped her. The first was of course Datta Davjekar who gave her the first opportunity to sing a Playback song for his film Aapki sewa mein-1947. The second was K.Datta or Datta Korgaonkar, who, after his favourite singer Noorjehan left India, took Lata under his wings and gave her songs. The third Dutta was this-D.C.Dutt. No information is available about him whatsoever, except what is printed in HFGK and its duplication in Pankaj Raag’s book “Dhunon ki Yatra”. Thanks to this, we know that his debut was through the film Sona Chandi-1946. Out of 12 songs of the film, only two were his and one of them was by Lata Mangeshkar.
