“Hamraahi” (1963) was a Remake of a Telugu Movie namely “Bharyya Bhartalu” (1960) starring Akkineni Nageshwar Rao and Krishna Kumari. “Hamraahi” (1963) was a Prasad Proctions movie. It was produced by L V Prasad and directed by T Prakash Rao.

The moment we see the caption for this song “woh din yaad karo, woh din yaad karo ” the mind somehow produced the image of Mehmood and Shobha Khote singing this. I dont know how it happened to me, because I dont remember seeing this song before. I havent seen this movie either. This song was frequently played on vividh bharati. May be my mother had told me that this was a Mehmood -Shobha Khote song, and the information was stored somewhere in the deep recesses. Similar thing happened the other day with ‘Ajahun na aaye baalma saawan beeta jaaye”. This song from ‘Saanjh aur Savera’ has roughly the same team of Mehmood-Shobha, with only S. Kalyanpur replacing Lata. It is a classical, sort of jugalbandi song. When I saw the video I knew I had seen it on T.V. in “Chhaayageet ” or “Chitrahaar”.

This is a well known evergreen song which most music lovers know even if many of them are not aware of the details of the song. Even I was not aware about the details. It is only now that I have becme aware that this song is from ‘Hamraahi” (1963) and that it is picturised as a melancholic song on Rajendra Kumar and Jamuna.

There are occasions when a couple may have strained relations and they may not be on talking terms with each other. But they are required to put up a facade of normalcy in front of their acquaintances. This song is a lovely picturisation of that nature. It is a get together party and the friends of Rajendra Kumar want Jamuna to sing a song. Rajendra Kumar, who otherwise would not speak to her, is contrained to request her to sing a song. Jamuna, with a heavy heart, is forced to sing this song.

Rajendra Kumar during his heydays was a big star and he was in fact nicknamed “Jubilee” Kumar because his movies tended to be hits. It was an open secret that he aped Dilip Kumar’s acting style and mannerisms. Someone apeing the best and going on to have huge success is nothing new and we see it in so many fields of activities.
