It is with great pleasure that I write this tribute today to Johnny Walker, one of the greatest (if not the greatest) comedy actors we have seen in Hindi cinema. Today happens to be his 89th birth anniversary and it is as good an occasion as any to remember him and thank him for all the wonderful memories he has left us with.

We have discussed a couple of songs from “Teesri Kasam” (1966) recently. In the course of that discussion, I have learnt the story of the novel called “Maare Gaye Gulfaam” which was picturised as “Teesri Kasam”. The movie has faithfully reproduced the flavour of the novel. The movie failed to find favour with the majority of the moviegoers during its first release, but the re-releases have seen the movie doing better.

A seashore with sand beaches and sun shine with some outcroppings of rocks and trees of palms or coconut is a dream destination for a holiday. And if the climate is moderate and not too hot, one can just keep looking at the blue gold and green black hues and not bother to disturb anything, not even the waves.

The days of comedians having a special role with well defined characters and a pivotal role in the main story of the film or parallel story were well and truly over by early 70’s. This is especially true about actors like Mehmood and Johnny Walker. They had a meaty role as well a heroine to sing songs with. One or two songs were a must for them in every film they starred. I really think there should a separate tag of category for this extinct species of comic actor. A tag for “Mehmood song” and “Johnny walker song” will not look out of place in a blog like this.

Usually when we go on a road trip and if I am driving, my husband and kids knows which songs I am going to listen, I mean of which artist. So, when I ask them to play my ipod, without any inquiry, they would start playlist of Rafi. Second playlist consists of all romantic songs, another playlist is about blue mood songs, the next one is prayer/bhajans/gospel which I play in the morning. Last but not least is the playlist of songs which I can listen to any time/part of the day. I have named it as all time favorite.
