Remembering IS Johar on the anniversary of his passing away on 10th March.
I S Johar, the redoubtable and simply irrepressible personality of the Hindi cinema world is well known for his versatility, his topicality, and his penchant for being in the news for a variety of reasons. Whether it be multiple marriages or open support for male sterilization, he was a strongly opinionated person, with emphatic views, and yet and aloof and a suave demeanor. He is also known to be a very well read person, and his ‘Question Box’ in the magazine Filmfare, was popular for many years.

I S Johar was quite a maverick character in Hindi movies. He tended to make fun movies. His movies were inspired by the British series “Carry on..”. The titles of this movies, that took an irreverent view of things, tended to be along the lines of “Johar in …..”.

Between 1950s to 1970s, there was a series of British movies whose titles began with “Carry on..” . These movies were low budget comedy movies, whose comedy consisted of parody, farce, slapstick and double entendre, as wikipedia puts it. In India, I S Johar took a leaf out of this “Carry On” series movies, and he produced a few such movies whose titles began with “Johar in..”.

“Raaz” (1967) is a movie that is known as one of Rajesh Khanna’s earliest movies (perhaps even his debut). He was the hero f the movie of course. But it turns out that he was not the only one figuring in songs and dance.

“Anita”(1967) is a movie starring Manoj Kumar and Sadhana. it was the third part of a trilogy of mystery woman movie that Raj Khosla made. The other two being Wo Kaun Thi and Mera Saayaa. But much has changed by 1967 when this movie was released. But much had changed in all these years. Sadhana, who looked so pretty and stunning with a glowing face, had lost much of her facial glow and charm following some illness. This movie, to the best of my knowledge, was not as much of a success as the other two movies.

“Johar Mehmood in Goa” (1965), as the title suggests, is a movie starring I S Johar and Mehmood. The two go to Goa in a bid to liberate it. Yes, Goa was still under Portuguese occupation till 1961 while the rest of India had got independence in 1947 itself. It was in 1961, when it finally became a part of India.
