‘Sparsh’ (1980) was Sai Paranjpye’s first feature film. Besides directing it, she wrote the story, screen-play and dialogues. At the time of making of the film, she faced enormous problems at every stage – from the selection of actors to the submission of the film’s final print to the Central Board of Film Certification and then to the Feature Film Jury of the National Film Awards on due date. And if I go by what the director of the film has revealed through her interviews in newspapers and periodicals and also in her Marathi book, ‘Sai – Maaza Kalapravaas’, the major obstacles came from the producer of the film – Basu Bhattacharya, who was known in Hindi film industry as a stingy producer.

She was born in Mumbai, raised in Lucknow and Canberra (Australia), grew up in Pune, did some theatre course in Paris, spent a considerable time in Delhi and now she spends time commuting between Mumbai and her ancestral home in Pune. She has worked through almost all the segments of mulit-media – a radio announcer, television producer, documentary film maker, Hindi film writer-director, author and some more. She is not shy of mincing words about those personalities even of high statures who have one time or the other rubbed her in a wrong way. She is Sai Paranjpye (born on March 19, 1938). It is interesting to note the background of family as she seems to have inherited some genes from them.

It is with mixed emotions that I write this post.
No, it’s not quite what you’re thinking. Usually “mixed emotions” involve an element of happiness, tempered with sadness. Like parents sending their son or daughter abroad for higher studies. On one hand, they’re happy for their child’s future, on the other there’s an element of sadness that they will be separated by a considerable amount of distance and time.

25th March is the birthday of Farooque Sheikh. We would have been celebrating his 66th birthday if had not left us so suddenly. But as they say even God loves good souls.

When my son was born in 1990 my dad was super worried. Well he was worried that I might end up naming my son Kapil Dev (my son shares Kapil Dev’s date of birth-6th Jan) as I am a huge fan of Kapil paaji (as he is said to be called in cricketing circles). He was even more worried when he came to know that Azharuddin could be what I might end up naming my son (as that was the date on which he was given the captain’s cap for the first time, and I am crazy about cricket. I am sure that there are very few who are not crazy about the game in India, right Atul?)

“Chasme baddoor” (1981) was a small bugdet non mainstream movie. This kind of movie, sans fights and sans lost and found storylines had their own fan following. There were several movies like this in 1980s that did reasonably well.
