Last week, I was surfing the internet to gather information on the Urdu poet and lyricist Kaif Irfani. While I did not get much information on him, I was rewarded with a couple of rare songs written by him. One of the rare songs which I heard for the first time is ‘pyaar ki ye talkhiyaan jo na sah sakoon’ from an obscure film called SARDAAR (1955).

There were a number of Urdu poets during the golden era of Hindi film music that also ran in the contest of attaining the prime slots as lyricists in Hindi films. By early 60s, most of them had either disappeared from the scene or they were marginalised. A few of them had migrated to Pakistan to try their luck there. The names of some of such lyricists who come to my mind are Nakshab, Anjum Philibiti, Zia Sarhadi, Behzad Lucknowi, Aziz Kashmiri, Shewan Rizvi, Noor Lucknowi, Khumar Barabankvi etc. Some of them were also script/screenplay writers at one time or the other.

Mukesh started his filmy career in Hindi film industry as an actor-singer in ‘Nirdosh’ (1941). But it was his song dil jaltaa hai to jalne de in ‘Pehli Nazar’ (1945) which paved the way for him to become a successful playback singer. Somehow, Mukesh seemed to have been beaten by the acting bug. He acted in films like ‘Aah’ (1953), ‘Maashooqa’ (1953) and in his own production ‘Anuraag’ (1956). He had also produced two films – ‘Malhar’ (1951) which was a success in the box office. However, he did not act in this film. His second film as producer was ‘Anuraag’ (1956) in which he also acted in a lead role and composed music for the film. The film was a flop. With this, his foray into acting as well as music directin in Hindi films came to an end.
