Mukesh started his filmy career in Hindi film industry as an actor-singer in ‘Nirdosh’ (1941). But it was his song dil jaltaa hai to jalne de in ‘Pehli Nazar’ (1945) which paved the way for him to become a successful playback singer. Somehow, Mukesh seemed to have been beaten by the acting bug. He acted in films like ‘Aah’ (1953), ‘Maashooqa’ (1953) and in his own production ‘Anuraag’ (1956). He had also produced two films – ‘Malhar’ (1951) which was a success in the box office. However, he did not act in this film. His second film as producer was ‘Anuraag’ (1956) in which he also acted in a lead role and composed music for the film. The film was a flop. With this, his foray into acting as well as music directin in Hindi films came to an end.

Mukesh’s preoccupation with production, acting and the music composition for ‘Anuraag’ had made him to push back his playback singing career to the background as he could not find time to sing for other banners. Probably this partly explains as to why Shankar-Jaikishan had to take Manna Dey to sing for Raj Kapoor in films like ‘Shree 420’ (1955) and ‘Chori-Chori’ (1956). The failure of ‘Anuraag’ (1956) affected Mukesh badly, both financially and in his filmy career. He had to make a fresh start in his playback singing career which was best suited for him. But regaining one’s place in Hindi film industry after a long absence is a difficult task. Mukesh faced some difficult times of his life during this period. Luckily, the popularity of his songs from the films ‘Madhumati’ (1958) and ‘Phir Subah Hogi’ (1958) brought him back on the rails and to his old glory.

‘Anuraag’ (1956) had some beautiful songs of Mukesh and Lata Mangeshkar. But the utter failure of the film put these songs into background. The only song which I had heard on the radio during my younger days was “kise yaad rakhoon kise bhool jaaun” . I came to know of other songs from this movie only a few months back. Three songs from the film have been covered in the blog. Recently, I came across another beautiful Lata Mangeshkar’s song ‘nazar mila ke nazar churaana’ from the film. The song was penned by Kaif Irfani and was set to music by Mukesh. The film had Mukesh and Usha Kiran in the lead role supported by other actors like Mridula, Pratima Devi, Shivraj, Tun Tun etc. The film was produced under the banner of Mukesh Productions and directed by Madhusudan.

Only the audio clip of the song is available. But I guess it was picturised on Usha Kiran.

This song is written on the same metre and more or less on a similar sounding tune of a popular song from Hindi film of early 50s. After listening to this song, I am sure that many readers would recall that song. If not, that song is here.

Song-Nazar mila ke nazar churaana (Anuraag)(1956) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Kaif Irfani, MD-Mukesh

Lyrics

nazar mila ke nazar churaana
naya tareeka ye pyaar ka hai
aji na aise mein roothh jaana
ke aaj mausam bahaar ka hai
nazar mila ke nazar churaana
naya tareeka ye pyaar ka hai

ye do hi din mein badal saa jaana
kahaan se seekha yoon dil lagaana
ye do hi din mein badal saa jaana
kahaan se seekha yoon dil lagaana
humen bhi aata hai rooth jaana
sawaal lekin karaar kaa hai
aji na aise mein roothh jaana
ke aaj mausam bahaar ka hai

tumhen nahin par hamen khabar hai
wafaa mein apni bada asar hai
tumhen nahin par hamen khabar hai
wafaa mein apni bada asar hai
jo kheench laayi hai paas tumko
asar ye dil ki pukaar ka hai
aji na aise mein roothh janaa
ke aaj mausam bahaar ka hai

chalo ji itna hamen bataao
kasam hamaari jo tum chhupaao
chalo ji itna hamen bataao
kasam hamaari jo tum chhupaao
ye yaad kis ki sataa rahi hai
khayaal kis bekaraar ka hai
aji na aise mein roothh janaa
ke aaj mausam bahaar ka hai
