Like Rafi-Shammi Kapoor songs and Mukesh-Raj Kapoor songs,there used to be another great combination in the past, and that was Lata-Madan Mohan songs. These two have created many wonderful songs during their association of about 24 years.

Here is an old song from 1961 which I had never heard before till yesterday. This song is sung by Lata Suman Kaltanpur for Nimmi and the movie is “Shama”.

Madan Mohan not only got the best out of Lata, he did that with other singers as well. In fact, he had the knack of getting the best out of every singer he worked with, because he had the ability to guage the range of the singer’s voice and he would tailor his music accordingly. Thus we have singers as varied as Lata, Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh,Talat Mahmood, Asha Bhonsle, Bhupinder etc singing some of their most memorable songs under Madan Mohan.

This is a song where the genius of Kaifi Azmi can be seen in his ability to express complex, complicated and involved feelings in a very coherent and understandable manner. The situation is one where India ( a peace loving country that had no time and inclination for a war) was attacked by China in 1962, and as happens with those unprepared, untrained and unequipped, the Indian soldiers found themselves as sitting ducks on the front.

I, as well as my readers are not ashamed of being nostalgic. It is a natural outcome of enjoying songs that were created many decades ago. When we listen to these songs and watch their picturisation, the experience is very much like walking down the memory lane and reliving the past.

I have heard this song many a times and I loved it. Madan Mohan created such a nice qawwali which was written by Kaifi Azmi, and how it is picturised ? Not as a qawwali, but as a party song.
