Hullo Atuldom

Like they say in some sponsored programs, I shall also say:- today’s song has been selected with the help of my daughter who is known as Peevesie to the followers of the blog. (I always feel we should acknowledge all those who help us). She is the one who pointed out that the director of the film (Paheli 2005) from which today’s song is, was someone who tried his hand at films which didn’t have the regular run-of-the-mill stories.

In this article, I propose to explore two films – ‘Duvidha’ (1973) directed by Mani Kaul and ‘Paheli’ (2005) directed by Amol Palekar. Both these films are based on a short story, ‘Duvidha’ by the writer of Rajasthani literature and Sahitya Akademy Award winner, Vijaydan Detha (popularly known as ‘Bijji’). Bijji wrote the short story in 1958 by using a verbally transmitted Rajasthani folktale to convey a bride’s silent defiance of the prevailing patriarchal system by embracing a ghost as her husband when her real husband leaves for a faraway town on business for 5 years, two days after the marriage. The defiance came from the fact that her husband did not take into consideration his wife’s emotional needs while taking this decision. The author has used the metaphor of the ghost through which the wife’s silent revolt occurs.

Sudhir Mishra has been known for making off-beat/parallel Hindi films. ‘Ye Wo Manzil To Nahin’ (1988) was his first off-beat film as a director. The film won the National Film Award for the best debut film of a director. Thereafter, he directed another 15 off- beat films, the last being ‘Afwaah’ (2022) which is awaiting release. Off-beat films, by their very nature, would attract only a select group of audiences. Hence, it is not likely that most of these films would qualify as box office hits. I have not heard of any of Sudhir Mishra’s films as box office success. Some of his films first got released in the international film festivals. Almost all of his films were critically acclaimed. Despite this, it was difficult to manage theatrical release for some of his films.

Today’s song, like the previous song of “Jurm”(1990) discussed by me, is from a very recent movie ‘Criminal-1995’. The movie made its debut on the blog on 05.09.2008, with its beautiful romantic song ‘tu miley dil khile aur jeene ko kya chaahiye’. After that no song of this movie has been discussed so far.

Today after a gap of ‘4580’ days (breaking earlier record 😊 ‘4579’days) we are going to listen to the second song of this movie in the blog. Like others I was also not aware of the other songs of this movie except its song ‘tu miley dil khile aur jeene ko kya chaahiye’.

“Baahubali” part I was a movie that I had watched in 2015 in a city in Eastern UP. I had landed up there while I was transferred from my previous place of posting in Chattisgarh and I was awaiting my next posting.

The people of that town were quite laid back and they took nearly two weeks to get my posting order issued. That gave me enough time to watch a few movies, something I rarely do. In fact, I watched “Baahubali” part I twice !

Hullo to all Atulwaasis’

Today(8 february 2017) is the first death anniversary of Nida Fazli. I realised it when radio Ceylon played songs penned by him this morning. I must admit here that I didn’t know that he had passed away last year of a massive heart attack. Another thing I should admit was that I never knew that he was that old a poet.

There are only a handful of Bollywood numbers from movies made after mid-1960s that I really long to hear. Lest I may be misunderstood, this is a statement of personal preference by this music-illiterate, not necessarily an adverse commentary on the later years’ work.
