This Week, That Year – 6

23May – 29May, 2011
The seven days in May 2011, from 23rd to 29th. I am sure the world was extremely busy, as it always is, and there would be no dearth of info about what the then current trends and news were. Seems like this week was kind of low key and ordinary in terms of world events. But let us not go there. 🙂
Let us take on the story of that week, on our blog. Let us do the numbers first, and then I will take the readers through some very interesting details about the films that featured during that week.

I was thinking of writing a post for a long time but never put thoughts into digital format. I am “The” Ms. Lazybones 🙂
Finally, thanks to the mail thread about the November 7th Gangout in Bangalore which is currently in progress with lots of enthusiasm, I am ready with a post.
In the mail thread, our own Sudhir ji added Srinivas Ganti ji inviting him to the gangout. Though Ganti ji is unable to attend it, he shared with us an article written by him on few of Lata ji’s melodies. Being a die-hard fan of Lata ji, I was completely bowled over. I immediately mailed Ganti ji about re-using his article in a series of posts. I didn’t expect him to reply so fast, I got a reply within one hour. Permission was granted 🙂 Not only that, he even shared a link where transliteration of the lyrics were made available by none other than him.

Anil Biswas, a name that is associated with the Hindi film music, almost from its inception in the early 30s – an association that lasted all the way into the decade of 60s. It is almost as if the golden age of film music came to an end when this hugely talented composer decided to call it a day, and retired from film music in the late 60s. Today is the 98th birth anniversary of this doyen of Hindi film music.

Hindi movie music is enriched by a large number of artists. In many cases, these artists are known more by their work, rather than by their names. For instance, the name Sudhir Phadke may not ring many bells, especially with the younger generation, but just make them listen to songs like Din hai suhaana aaj pahli taarikh hai(Pahli taarikh) (1954) and Jyoti kalash chhalke(Bhaabhi ki choodiyaan)(1961).
These two immortal compositions are the creations of none other than Sudhir Phadke whose birth anniversary falls on 25 july.

One of the most outstanding songs sung by Lata Mangeshkar, this must go down as a very special song in her career as well as in the annals of Bollywood filmy music.
For once, the lyrics of the song were so different. Unlike the prevalent concept of lyrics those days ( heavy Persian influenced lyrics, and sometimes common day to day words), this song is written in textbook Hindi, the kind that was taught in schools and colleges.
