The innovator in Pankaj Babu has been responsible for some very remarkable additions to the sound and music aspect of the film industry. He was probably the first music arranger and orchestra conductor to introduce the use of western musical forms and instruments in the music for films in India. He is credited with introducing the use of instruments like piano and accordion, in the music compositions for Hindi and Bengali films that he worked on.

Radio broadcast services were introduced in India in 1927. The first establishment to broadcast radio signals for public consumption was a private company named India Broadcasting Corporation (IBC). This company was the forerunner of All India Radio (AIR).

Pankaj Babu’s last association with Hindi film world was in 1954. After the film Kasturi, in 1954 he did not work for any more Hindi films. His association with the Bengali cinema lasted for some more years, till 1972, beyond which he was content with the peace, and with teaching music. The Padam Shri award for this remarkable musician came in 1970, followed in 1972 by Dada Saheb Phalke award for lifetime contribution to Indian Cinema.

Music has always been an enchanting appeal for me, since my childhood. Having grown up on a listening diet of radio programs on AIR and Radio Ceylon, the music of Hindi films has been the best charm for me. In the eighties, fresh out of college, and into my first job, the earnings meant that now I could buy music that I wanted to listen. Cassette tapes were the popular media in those days, and making copies of music from records was a rampant cottage industry.

Pankaj Mullick, the name that shines in the Bengali music and culture as one of the brightest stars. Most of us are familiar with Pankaj Babu as being an accomplished composer and singer. But, much more than that, he was an innovator par excellence. Since the time machines started getting invented, and later became an integral part of how the society (or a part of the society) started to use them on a large scale, a certain divide between the rural and urban milieu has also emerged. The debate on this un-ending. The rural system is the caretaker of farms and dairy, and plays the significant role of the provider of food to the entire society. The industrialized and urban system on the other hand, has become the provider of the mechanized solutions and consumer products for the society. Is there a way to determine whether one is more important than the other? Advocates of both sides have argued now for many years, trying to establish the preponderance of one over the other. (IMHO, the farm and agricultural sector is more important, because it is possible to do without many things, rather most things in life, if it comes to that. But one cannot do without food. But that is just my opinion 🙂 ).
