Blog Day :

5555 Post No. : 18020

Today’s song is from the film Parichay-1954.

When I sat to write this post, suddenly I realised that in the last 20 posts, I have written 16 posts ( a cool 80 %) on songs from films of the 50’s. Normally I try to have a mix of songs from different decades – my favourites being the 30’s and the 40’s – so that the readers have some variety, while reading the posts. This time somehow, the songs from the 50’s seem to have overtaken all other songs !

Here is a song from film called Parichay-54. This song is sung by Lata Mangeshkar. The song is a different type of a fast paced song, the like of which Lata is not normally known for. The pace of the song reminds me of another fast paced song, “Mohe lagaa saraa jag feeka feeka re balam, which Lata sang for film Jhanjhar-53 under the baton of C.Ramchandra. The story of Jhanjhar-53 was set in Malaysia and hence C.Ramchandra had used a Malaysian fast tune in that film. Gulzar’s third film, as a director, Parichay (1972) has often been accused of being a copy of The Sound of Music (1963). I think that this is too much of an exaggeration, since the only common thing between the stories of the two films being a teacher, who wins over his unruly wards. That is a common theme enough in films and novels. The whole context and the treatment of the story is completely different. All said and done one can’t deny that the song saa re ke saa re has a similarity to doe a deer. The similarity is not in the tune but in the sense that both songs explain the seven notes of music.
