Today’s song is from a Hit film Pehli Nazar-1945.
The film was produced and directed by Mazhar Khan, for his own banner Mazhar Art Productions, Bombay. Anil Biswas gave excellent music to the songs written by Dr. Safdar ‘Aah’ Sitapuri. The cast of this Muslim social film was Motilal, Veena, Munawwar Sultana, Baburao Pendharkar, Bhudo Advani, Nemo, Bibbo, Balakram, Cuckoo and others.

Mukesh song ” Dil jalta hai to jalne de” actually introduced me to the film Pehli Nazar-45. Being a Muslim social film, it was quite popular in Hyderabad, which was Nizam state, with a considerable Muslim population in it.
When the Fazli Brothers-the Director brothers- decided to make their first Muslim social film, ” Qaidi” in 1940, they were not sure how the purists in their religion would accept a film on Muslim life. But the director-Hussanain Fazli- was very firm that come what may, he would produce a Muslim social film. Just to be on a safe ground, he chose to make the film in Calcutta- far off from Bombay to avoid any resistance from the fundamentalists. The film was made by Film Corporation of India, Calcutta.

Today, I am writing about one of the prominent actors of 1930s and 40s who started his film career in the silent film era and became producer-director during the second half of 1940s. His name – Mazhar Khan, a forgotten name not only for the current generation but also for many in my generation as well.

Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 44
——————————————
The moment the film PEHLI NAZAR (1945) is mentioned, the first name associated with the movie that comes to my mind is Mukesh. His song “dil jaltaa hai to jalne de” quickly acquired an iconic status. The song has some interesting anecdotes too which have been discussed elsewhere in the Blog. The other details of the film such as Mazhar Arts banner, theme of Muslim social background, the director, the cast, lyricist and the music director come to my mind later.

The Voice Of Mukesh #8
—————————-
It is well known that the film that really launched the career of Mukesh was the 1945 film ‘Pehli Nazar’. And in this film, the most enduring sound has been the song “Dil Jalta Hai To Jalne De”, sung by Mukesh. Apart from this timeless and iconic song, Mukesh has sung three more song in this film. One more solo song, and two duets with Naseem Akhtar. The solo song is “Tai Kar Ke Badi Door Se Purpech Dagariyaa”, a light hearted song of a young heart in search of love. The duet is the title song “Laga Pehli Nazar Ka Teer”. These three songs are now already present on this blog.

The Voice of Mukesh #6
——————————
‘Pehli Nazar’ (1945) proved to be the take off film for Mukesh. Of course, the iconic “Dil Jalta Hai. . .” needs no introduction. The phenomenal longevity of this song did two things. First, it established Mukesh as a singing icon, to be reckoned with. And secondly, it put in shade the remaining songs of this film, which are now remembered only by the real die hard aficionados of Mukesh’s voice. The pathos and the depth of emotion that is subsumed in “Dil Jalta Hai. . .”, is without doubt matchless. But then, the other songs in this film are no less a delight, in their own rights.

This is such a beautiful gem of a song, that I heard for the first time today. The movie is Pehli Nazar (1945). Many will remember this as the debut movie for Mukesh, ‘Dil Jalta Hai To Jalne De’. The lead characters of this movie are Motilal, Veena, Nigar Sultana, Cuckoo, Bibbo, B Pendarkar etc. The lyrics are created by Dr. Safdar Aah Sitapuri, and the music compositions are by Anil Biswas. The singer is Naseem Akhtar.
