Unka ishaaraa jaan se pyaaraa

Posted on: May 7, 2011

This article is written by Sudhir, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

This is such a beautiful gem of a song, that I heard for the first time today. The movie is Pehli Nazar (1945). Many will remember this as the debut movie for Mukesh, ‘Dil Jalta Hai To Jalne De’. The lead characters of this movie are Motilal, Veena, Nigar Sultana, Cuckoo, Bibbo, B Pendarkar etc. The lyrics are created by Dr. Safdar Aah Sitapuri, and the music compositions are by Anil Biswas. The singer is Naseem Akhtar.

As only the audio is available, and hence cannot make out on whom this picturized. But yet, a very lovely composition, and beautifully sung.

Song-Unka ishaaraa jaan se pyaaraa (Pehli Nazar)(1945) Singer-Naseem Akhtar, Lyrics-Safdar Aah Sitapuri, MD-Anil Biswas

Lyrics

unka ishaara
jaan se pyaara
de gayaa dil ko mere sahaaraa
unka ishaara
jaan se pyaara
kar ke muhabaat kab se waada
keh diya oh ho
main hoon tumhaara
main hoon tumhaara
jaan se pyaara
de gayaa dil ko mere sahaaraa
unka ishaara jaan se pyaara

jaise nayaa ik saaz bajaayaa
jaise nayaa ik geet sunaayaa
jaise nayaa ik saaz bajaayaa
jaise nayaa ik geet sunaayaa
jaagin jaagin jaagin umangen
jaagin jaagin jaagin umangen
chaunki jawaani
dil ne pukaara
chaunki jawaani
dil ne pukaara
jaan se pyaara
jaan se pyaara
de gayaa dil ko mere sahaaraa
unka ishaara
jaan se pyaara

khatm huaa bachpan ka zamaana
aaa aaa aaa
khatm huaa bachpan ka zamaana
pee ki nagariyaa mein ab hai jaana
pee ki nagariyaa mein ab hai jaana
thhodi si nayyaa aur badhaa de
thhodi si nayyaa aur badhaa de
paas hai manzil
wo hai kinaaraa
paas hai manzil
wo hai kinaaraa
jaan se pyaara
jaan se pyaara
de gayaa dil ko mere sahaaraa
unka ishaara
jaan se pyaara

Sudhir ji,

For the younger generation, the name of Naseem Akhtar may draw a blank.I provide some information below:
Born in a Nabab family of Peshavar in the year 1920,Naseem was the younger sister of Sardar Akhtar(wife of Mehboob Khan) and Bahar Akhtar(wife of A.R.Kardar).She had a sweet voice and interest in singing.
She sang many songs in Hindi films from 1941 to 1947.She worked with the major composers of that era, like Shyamsunder,C.Ramchandra,Khurshid Anwar,Zande khan,Govind Ram,Gulam Hyder,Naushad,Khemchand Prakash and Vasant Desai etc.
She sang in films like Shahjehan,Sindoor,Doli,Keemat,Bhanwar,Parda,Sohni Mahiwal,Parbat pe apna dera,Pehli Nazar,Khandan etc,etc.
After Partition she migrated to Pakistan despite all opposition from relatives and had to repent later,as she faced difficult times.Divorced from Rafiq Maula,a Pakistani Producer, she spent her last days in miserable poverty and breathed her last somtime around 1952 after severe unattended illness.
Her songs in Pagli,Ek Roz,Safar and Aaj aur Kal were appreciated much.

IMPORTANT NOTE-

According to the new evidence dug out by some sincere workers of HF history, the above information is NOT correct.
Naseem Akhtar was NOT the sister of Sardar or Bahar Akhtar.

Arun ji,
Thanks again 🙂
I realized after posting that I missed adding some details about Naseem Akhtar. But your detailed post completes this gap.

It may be worthwhile to listen to a much later rendition of this song by the Pakistani singer Nayyara Noor which is just beautiful:

This song was picturised on Munnawar Sultana.Nasim Akhtar was given chance by Anilda to sing in Pehli Nazar on the recommendation of A.R.Kardar. Anil Biswas had earlier composed music for Kardar for his film Pooja.

I have seen this movie when it was shown on Doordarshan way back in 1974 July. How much I am searching for it as it was an excellent movie with a tragic story involving Munawar Sultan, Veena and Motilal. The story was a Muslim social involving 2 Pathan families whereby there are 2 brothers living as neighbors and their daughters, Munawar Sultana and Veena are so fond of each other and feel more of sisters than cousins. An arranged engagement gets arranged between Motilal and Veena and when Motilal comes to see Veena, by chance he sees Munawar Sultana in the house. Thereby he changes his mind and insists on breaking off the engagement and proposes for Munawar Sultan, thereby creating a big rift between the 2 close families. This song was picturised on Munawar Sultana as she rushes in ecstasy after being wooed by Motilal. Towards the end of the song, Veena appears in the scene and realizes something is not proper.

Has anyone one got this film on VHS or DVD? If so I would like to buy it please. I know that the Pune Film Institute have got the film but they would not help me when I asked if I could buy it. They told me that I could go and watch it at the Institute. But I don’t live in India. Anyway, they weren’t much help.
