Today’s song is from the film Jwala-1938.

It was a regular Costume film made by Master Vinayak’s Huns Pictures. The film had a cast of Ratnaprabha, Chandra Mohan, Ashalata, Mandhare, Vinayak, Rajni and others. Music Director was Debutante Dhamman Khan, assisted by the veteran Dada Chandekar. Dhamman Khan was one of those giants of classical music who had developed an urge (call it itch) to try their hand at composing film music,do a film or two and return to their own comfort zone again.
Some such other examples are Bhurji khan(Kurukshetra-33), Ameer saab(Nirdosh abla-35), Nawab Khan(Mirza sahiban-35) Wamanrao Sadolikar(Naganand-35…this is C.Ramchandra’s First film as a Hero. The film ran for just ONE day !),Abdul Kareem Khan (Maut ka Toofan-35 and Voh kaun-35), Master Giyasuddin (Typist girl-35) etc etc.

Today’s song is a rare Bhajan from the film Jai Hanuman-1948.

A few days back, I got a message from our friend Gajendra Khanna ji, along with this song. He suggested that I write a post on it. This song was given to him long ago by Suman Chaurasia ji who had got it from Girdharilal Vishwakarma ji. When I heard this song, I was very much impressed with its tune, music and melody. Since the song was in MP3 format, I requested Sadanand Kamath ji to upload this song, so that I could use it for my post. However, Sadanand ji found that this song was already posted recently by the Saregama company. He sent me its link.

Today’s song is a DayDream song video from the film Brandy ki Botal-1939.

The period of early Talkie cinema was interesting in many ways from the point of view of Cinema history. The experimental attitude of the filmmakers allowed the audience to enjoy a variety of subjects of life. Not only this, but due to studios like Prabhat, Huns, Maharashtra Film co. etc making bilingual films in Hindi and Marathi, gave a taste of Marathi style of acting and pronunciation of the dialogues. Exposure to Marathi actors, who acted only in Marathi films, had a typical accent, diction and style of delivering the dialogues which , at times, sounded funny and odd. The Hindi language that was used in these Bilingual films from Maharashtra was sprinkled with ” Hindi-ised” Marathi words, which, though not completely wrong, were rarely used in day-to-day use in the Hindi Belt. One example would be ” मैं तुम्हारी बाट ( वाट in Marathi) देखूंगी “…. which simply meant ” I will wait for you ” !

Today’s song is from the film Chandan-1941.

When I first saw this name in the HFGK, I remembered the 1958 film Chandan, which was a very entertaining film, having sweet songs composed by Madan Mohan. Today’s film is an obscure film. I tried to get information about this film from the various sources that I use frequently, but nowhere could I get anything, except what is mentioned in the HFGK. Some of its cast members’ names were also seen for the first time by me. Names like Mrs. Sindhu Gadgil, Hari Das, Bala Bhai and Baby Lalita Rao are names which I never again saw in any films. But then, I come across such obscure films now and then and wonder how the producers must have recovered their invested money !

Today’s song is from a stunt film Jungle Princess-1942.

This was a film with Tarzan’s story. The only difference here was that the ‘Tarzan’ was a GIRL ! The story behind this film is interesting.

Mohammed Rafi – 99th Birth Anniversary and Centenary celebration.

So here comes the birth anniversary of Rafi Sahab. This marks the end of 99th year since Rafi Sahab was sent to this world as a ‘farishta’ some like to believe. Farishta-sifat person most Rafi fans agree to it. As if we have seen a Farishta ever, even if the creation was ever visible to human eye.

Today’s song is from the film Mr. Sampath-1952.

The cast of the film was Motilal, Padmini, Vanaja, Kanhaiyalal, Agha, Badri Prasad, Sundari bai and many South Indian artistes. The music was by the pair- Balkrishna alias B.S.Kalla and E.Sankar Sastry. The film was produced by Gemini and directed by S.S.Vasan, owner of the banner. The film was based on the novel “Mr. Sampath- Printer of Malgudi” by the famous writer R.K.Narayan and a hit Tamil film ” Miss Malini”-1947. I have read the novel and also seen this film, after it was released on 25-12-1952 and again 2-3 times after few more years…the latest being in last month. There are many changes in the story. The novel’s Hero is very loveable, so is the film’s Hero but only as entertainment.

Today’s song is from a very old film-Bramhachari-1938.

When this film was released in 1938, it created a sensation, because the film’s debutante Heroine, Meenakshi Shirodkar had sung a song in a swimming pool donning only a one piece Swimsuit ! 85 years ago it was a very very daring and shameful act which would ‘spoil the young and the innocent’ children. The Traditional puritan society could not tolerate it. The film was made in Marathi and Hindi. When the Marathi version was released in Maharashtra, the ‘Sanatani’ section of the society of Poona protested by having an agitation in front of the theatre. Long articles criticizing this appeared in local papers and some people even threatened to go to the court, if these scenes were not removed from the film immediately. Conversely, these scenes also attracted huge crowds who enjoyed such scenes on the screen for the first time in a Marathi film !

Today’s song is from the film Ghayal-1951.

This social film was produced and directed by Ramchandra Thakur. The music was by Gyan Dutt. In this film, there were 11 songs-including a 2 part song-but unusually there were 7 Lyricists whose songs were sung by 6 different singers. While 5 singers were well known, the sixth name ” Bhola ” was unknown. For a long time no one knew who this Bhola was. Many people thought that Bhola was Bhola Shreshtha, the M.D., but it’s not true. This Bhola was Bulo C Rani,M.D. He joined the industry to be a singer. Khemchand Prakash gave him an opportunity to sing in the film Mehmaan-1942. Later, the same year,Gyan Dutt also gave him songs.Bulo C Rani sang 34 songs in 19 films – initially in his own name, and from 1944 onwards as ‘Bhola’, as he had become a Music Director himself by then, with the film Moorti-1944.
