O what a gem this song is. I tracked this song as part of this series, and heard it for the first time recently. Probably the most beautiful song with the theme of ‘Mere Sapnon Ki Raani’. There is the iconic ‘Mere Sapnon Ki
Raani, Roohi Roohi Roohi’ song from the film ‘Shahjehaan’ (1946), sung by Saigal Sb. After 39 years came another song that took the country by storm –“Mere Sapnon Ki Rani Kab Aayegi Tu”(‘Aradhana’, 1969). In between and thereafter, there are a few other songs with this theme, none so notable as these. And then we have this song in 1948, a rendering by Mukesh, in my opinion, which is simply the best of the lot.

“Afsar” (1950) was a Navketan Production movie. It was directed by Chetan Anand. The movie had Dev Anand, Suraiyya, Rashid Khan, Manmohan Krishna, Kanhaiyalal, Krishna Dhawan, Zohra Sehgal, Anand Pal etc in it.

HAMAARI BAAT (1943) was produced under the banner of Bombay Talkies and directed by M I Dharmsey. Devika Rani and Jairaj were in the lead roles with, David, Shah Nawaz, Mumtaz Ali, Kamta Prasad, Raj Kapoor and Suraiya in supporting roles. This was the last film in which Devika Rani acted. As per http://www.myswar.com, there were 10 songs in the film all being penned by Pandit Narendra Sharma. Anil Biswas was the music director of the film.

When Kidar Sharma wrote the lyrics of the song so jaa rajkumari so jaa, he might not have been aware that he wrote the first lori (lullaby) song for a Hindi film. Another thing he did differently was that he wrote the lori lyrics for a male singer-actor (K L Saigal) whereas the lori is traditionally sung by women. This could happen because, as he said in his autobiography ‘The One and Lonely Kidar Sharma’ (2002), he had in fact written a lori ‘so jaa raj dulari so jaa, so jaa main balihaari so jaa’ especially for his wife Raj Dulari. But K L Saigal fell in love with it and pressurised Kidar Sharma to make it public. It was only after his wife agreed that Kidar Sharma consented to use this lori for the film ‘Zindagi” (1940) by changing ‘raj dulari’ to ‘rajkumari’. This lori sung by K L Saigal became very popular all over India.

During my younger days, Radio Ceylon (later Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation) and Vividh Bharati service of all India Radio (Aakashvani) were the two sources on which I used to listen to Hindi film songs’ programmes. I got to know only sometime in late 60s that Aakashvani stations were not broadcasting Hindi film songs prior to the setting of Vividh Bharati in 1957. Later I came to know that this policy decision was taken by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in 1952 when Dr B V Keskar, the then Information and Broadcasting Minister felt that Hindi film songs had become vulgar and westernised. It was decided that some songs having literary value such as those written by poets like Bhagwati Charan Verma and Pandit Narendra Sharma should be turned into songs and played on Aakashvani in place of Hindi film songs. It is said that some of such songs were composed by Anil Biswas. It was during this time that Lata Mangeshkar sang her first non-filmy song ‘yug ki sandhya krishak vadhu si’ written by Pandit Narendra Sharma and composed by Anil Biswas during. Unfortunately, this song’s disc was damaged during its first play on the radio and was thus lost forever.
