I am familiar with the Hindi film ‘Sikandar-e-Azam’ (1965) which I had watched on Doordarshan long ago. How can I forget the iconic song “jahan daal daal par sone ki chidiyan karti hai basera” which used to be played on our Independent Day and the Republic Day. A few months back, I came to know that there was another film ‘Sikandar’ with the same story line which was released in 1941. The film was produced under the banner of Minerva Movietone owned by Sohrab Modi and directed by him. The star cast included Prithviraj Kapoor ( Sikandar), Sohrab Modi ( King Porus), Vanmala (Ruksana), Sheela, Meena Shorey ( Prarthhna, Kign Ambi’s sister), K N Singh ( King Ambi of Taxila) etc.

I just now realised that we are coming to an end of all K L Saigal songs that are there to be discussed. Yes, it is true that we in this blog have covered all the available movie and non movie songs in Hindi/Urdu that were sung by K L Saigal.

Typically our readers send us farmaishes of songs and we in this blog struggle to fulfil all these farmaishes. And it is my fond wish that a day will come when the shoe will be on the other foot and our readers will struggle to think of songs as farmaishes. 😀

Since the time machines started getting invented, and later became an integral part of how the society (or a part of the society) started to use them on a large scale, a certain divide between the rural and urban milieu has also emerged. The debate on this un-ending. The rural system is the caretaker of farms and dairy, and plays the significant role of the provider of food to the entire society. The industrialized and urban system on the other hand, has become the provider of the mechanized solutions and consumer products for the society. Is there a way to determine whether one is more important than the other? Advocates of both sides have argued now for many years, trying to establish the preponderance of one over the other. (IMHO, the farm and agricultural sector is more important, because it is possible to do without many things, rather most things in life, if it comes to that. But one cannot do without food. But that is just my opinion 🙂 ).

Just like Radio Ceylon used to play a K L Saigal song every morning at the stroke of 8 AM in the days gone by, I too am discussing a K L Saigal song every morning. Unlike Radio Ceylon, who re cycled the same usual songs, I am discussing “new” Saigal songs every day. And it is interesting to notice that K L Saigal sang songs that many people may not have heard before.

When I look at the statistics for the blog, I find that there have been 13 singers,13 lyricists and 15 music directors who have completed their individual centuries of songs. Among the list of non centurions, I notice four music directors and three lyricists who have 50 + songs to their credits in the blog at present and they are next in line for their individual centuries. But when I look at the list of singers, I find that the singers who are closest to 100 songs mark are in their twenties and thirtees. K L Saigal is the closest to 100 and he is at 34. Next are Usha Mangeshkar, C Ramchandra, Amirbai Karnataki and Meena Kapoor.

“Dhoop Chaaon” (1935) was a milestone movie for Bollywood. It was the first movie where playback singing was used, though it was not the same as playback singing as it is known today. It then only meant that the actor could concentrate on acting during picturisation and he would get the song recorded earlier or later. The actor himself/ herself needed to sing of course.
