Mention ‘Masti Bhara Hai Samaa’ – and there comes to mind an unforgettable sweet melody that will pull at the heart strings, no matter how many times you listen to it. Somehow, the duets that Manna Dey has sung with Lata ji or Suman Kalyanpur, under the baton of Dattaram, are melodies out of this world. Listen to “Ye Din, Din Hain Khushi Ke” from ‘Jab Se Tumhen Dekha Hai’ (1963), or “Na Jaane Khaan Tum The” from ‘Zindagi Aur Khwaab’ (1961), or “Boley Ye Dil Ka Ishaara” from ‘Santaan’ (1959), or “Pyaar Bhari Ye Ghataayen” from ‘Qaidi No. 911’ (1959), or “Bheegi Hawaaon Mein Teri Adaaon Mein” from ‘Shriman Satyawaadi’ (1960), or even the lesser heard “Mil Gaye Duniya Mein Jeene Ke Sahaare” from ‘Dark Street’ (1961) and “Yeh Nasheeli Hawa, Chha Raha Hai Nasha” from ‘Neeli Aankhen’ (1962).

Remembering Dattaram Wadker on the anniversary of his passing away today – 08 June, 2007. He was 78 when he passed away.

“Qaidi No 911″(1959) was produced and directed by Aspi for Basant Pictures, Bombay. The movie had Shaikh Mukhtar, Nanda, Minoo Mumtaz, Daisy Irani, Mehmood, Mukri, Gajanan Jagirdar, Hiralal, Achla Sachdev, Protima devi, Babu Raje, Uma Dutt, Tuntun, Nagpal, Altaf, Bhudo Advani, Fazloo, Mithoo miya, Mohan Sandow, Ram murthy, Shetty, Shafi, Gulab,
Prem Sagar, Hanuman, Krishan Kumar, Bagla, Afsar Jahan, Munira begum and Honey Irani.

On this day ten years ago, two songs were covered. One song from “Samundar”(1957) and one song from “Qaidi No 911″(1959).
“Samundar”(1957) has been YIPPEED by now. That leaves “Qaidi No 911″(1959) as the only candidate for Blog Ten Year challenge today.

“Qaidi No 911″(1959) had six songs in it. Four songs (including a multiple version song) have been covered in the blog.

The first thing that comes to mind on hearing this song is ‘Wow’. No matter that I have heard this song umpteen times over the years, but yet, soon as this song plays, the mind gets up in excitement. A racy dance number from the film Qaidi No. 911 (1959), it has all the qualities of that are a hallmark of grade A gem songs.

Manna Dey is not a singer who got as many singing assignments as the other leading playback singers. Despite that, the list of Manna Dey’s songs makes for very impressive reading.

“Qaidi no 911” (1959) was a “B grade” movie in the sense that it was an action thriller and it had Sheikh Mukhtar as action hero. When I say it was a B grade movie, I mean no disrespect. In fact, I think movies like this with Sheikh Mukhtar as hero were as good as the A grade action movies of 1970s. Yes, action movies had begun to be regarded as A grade by 1970s.
