Blog Day :

5140 Post No. : 17099

Today’s song is from the film ‘Road No. 303’ (1960).

This film was special in many respects. Let’s start with it’s title. Among the total of 3240 Talkie films made in the first 30 years of Hindi films (1931-1960), only 19 Hindi films had titles which actually had numbers in their Titles. The first one to have a numerical figure in its title was Miss 1933 (1933) and the last one to have it was today’s film Road No. 303 (1960). Just for information of our readers, there were 7 such film titles in the 1930’s (total films 924), only 4 such film titles in the 1940’s (total films 1191) and 8 such film titles in the 1950’s (total films 1125). There were hundreds of film titles having figures in words, like ‘Ek Thi Ladki’, ‘Do Gunde’, ‘Teen Batti Char Rasta’ etc. but numbers in titles were a novelty.

Secondly, this was the first Hindi film of the music director C Arjun. He started by giving music to the first Sindhi film after the Independence – ‘Abana’ in 1958. (The first Sindhi film ever in India was ‘Ekta’ (1940), made by Wadia Movietone, directed by Homi Wadia).

Thirdly, this was the first and the only Hindi film in which Mehmood and Shubha Khote were the leading pair. In all other films, they were in the side roles.

‘Road No. 303’ was made by Mahesh Pictures, Bombay and it was directed by Dharam Kumar. He was born on 26-11-1919 and had directed 14 Hindi films. His first film as a director was ‘Jalte Deep’ (1950) and his last film was ‘Truck Driver’ (1970). Dharam Kumar expired on 28-7-1993, in his 75th year. The 6 songs of this film were written by Naksh Lyallpuri (3) and Jaan Nissar Akhtar (3).

‘Road No.303’ is truly an obscure movie as no information is available about it on any internet site. This name too is not known to many. The film was produced by Ratankumar and Bhikhubhai. The story of film is….

Manohar (Maqbool) is murdered and his body is thrown on the Road No. 303 in the dead of the night. Ramesh (Mehmood), his younger brother who loved him much is devastated. Manohar was an honest Police officer.

Ramesh is in love with Sadhana (Shubha Khote), a young and educated daughter of Seth Deen Dayal (KN Singh) . Seth ji is a well known philanthropist rich man, running destitute homes for widows and orphans.

Ramesh starts finding out about the cause of murder and he learns that soon Manohar was to arrest a big person in society for some serious crime. Munna (Bhagwan) , a small-time pickpocket and a friend of Ramesh, also helps him . Sona (Helen) a dancer in ‘Red Lite Cafe’ is also in love with Ramesh and helps him.

Meanwhile there are attempts to kill Ramesh too. Finally, with the help of Sona, Munna, and Sadhana, Ramesh finds out that the murderer is nobody else but Seth Deen Dayal who runs a racket of trading women and children to Arab countries.

Sadhana is very firm and in the end Seth ji is arrested for murder of Manohar and for his illegal work.

The debutante composer C Arjun was one of those composers who never got what he really deserved. In spite of giving music to 22 films, he always remained a “lesser known music Director”. His best known film was ‘Jai Santoshi Maa’ released in the same year (1975) as film ‘Sholay’ of Ramesh Sippy and it did an unprecedented business amongst the mythological films.

His full name was ARJUN PARMANAND CHANDNANI and he was born in Karachi on 1-9-1933. After partition his family settled in Baroda. He inherited his musical talent from his father who was a singer. He became assistant to another Sindhi music director Bulo C Rani. He started his career with composing for a Sindhi film ‘Abana’ (1958) (first Sindhi film in Independent India).

His first Hindi film was ‘Road No. 303’ in 1960. Off and on he got films under nondescript banners with B/C grade cast. That he created memorable music nevertheless did not do much to change his fortunes. His teaming with the lyricist Jaan Nisar Akhtar would rank at par with the best of Sahir Ludhianvi’s composed by SD Burman or Roshan. He also composed a number of non film songs.

He gave music to 22 Hindi films, besides films in Gujarati, Sindhi and Haryanvi languages. Some of his films were, ‘Main Aur Mera Bhai’, ‘Punarmilan’, ‘Ek Saal Pehle’, ‘Jai santoshi Maa’, ‘Raksha Bandhan’, ‘Karwa Chauth’, ‘Aankh Ka Taara’, ‘Lambu In Hong Kong’, ‘Ustad Pedro’, ‘Mangu Dada’, ‘Gunahon Ka Mandir’, ‘Nawab Sahib’, ‘Kanoon Aur Mujrim’, ‘Hamari Kahani’, ‘O Mere Jaane Jigar’ etc. His film ‘Susheela’ (1966), which was incomplete, was completed and releasd as ‘Subah Zaroor Aayegi’ in 1977 in which “Bemurawwat Bewafa Begaana e Dil Aap Hain” song sung by Mubarak Begum and “Gham Ki Andheri Raat Mein” sung by Talat and Rafi became very popular.

I still remember the interview of C Arjun by Ameen Sayani on radio in Binaca Geetmala program, a long time ago about the story behind as to how a popular song was written by Indivar and how it was tuned, for the film ‘Punarmilan’ (1964).

C Arjun said – “One day we (both me and Indivar) were travelling in a BEST bus while returning home in the evening, from the recording studio. Both of us were sitting on the same seat and the bus was packed full with passengers. After 2 or 3 stations Indivar saw that a young and very beautiful girl boarded the bus and she came near our seat standing in the middle amongst other standing passengers. Indivar was repeatedly looking at her time and again. After 4 or 5 minutes, Indivar asked me to leave my seat and offer it to the pretty girl standing besides us.

After a bit of hesitation I agreed and gave my seat to her. To my surprise, Indivar didn’t talk to her even once while she was sitting beside him for about 20 -25 minutes before she de-boarded the bus at one of the stops in our way. When I asked Indivar why he didn’t talk to her?. He replied today he shall de-board the bus with me at my residence bus stop & answer me when we shall reach my home. We de-boarded the bus at my residence. On reaching home Indivar said “My dear Arjun, thank you so much for offering your seat to her and letting her sit beside me and I have imagined and thought of some lines while she was standing and then sitting beside me”. Indivar there and then spoke those lines to me and they were “PAAS BAITHO TABIYAT BAHAL JAYEGI, MAUT BHI AA GAYI HO TO TAL JAYEGI”.

And then Indivar wrote this whole song there and then in about one hour and asked me to compose its tune the same night. We sat together after our dinner and composed its tune before we went to our beds late at night. Indivar stayed with me that night and left for his home next day morning.”

C Arjun died on 30-4-1992, due to a massive heart attack when he was recording a non-filmi Sindhi song in the Sterling Studios, Mumbai.

Sometime back there was a story that C Arjun started his career with acting and that he was the hero in film ‘Malhar’ (1951).

There is irrefutable proof available on Cinegems and Cineplot, that the hero of ‘Malhar’ was none other than Arjun Bakshi, and NOT C Arjun, MD.

Arjun Bakshi who had acted in some other films, including ‘Daku ki Ladki’, and Naujawan etc, was later a screenplay writer in Hindi films. He is the father of the actress Jyoti Bakshi (of ‘Bullet’, with Dev Anand). Jyoti and her father separated later and Jyoti had a very pathetic and sad demise, a few years back.

Few years back one senior member from RMIM group had reported that he had met Arjun Bakshi in a Music shop in Canada in 2003. And as written above, C Arjun had died in 1992. So, once for all it is clear, once again, that C Arjun the composer and Arjun the actor were two different persons. In addition, C Arjun’s nephew – Shyam Chandnani, who is in Dubai appeared in a music related Blog- Songs of Yore and commented that C Arjun had never ever acted in any film or visited Canada, in his lifetime. That was another final confirmation.

This film was only the second film – after ‘O Tera Kya Kehna’ (1959), in which Mehmood and Master Bhagwan came together. Today’s song is filmed on these two comedians. Though this was C Arjun’s first film, he had used Rock and Roll music for his songs. In today’s song he has tried a jugalbandi in Rock n Roll music with Bharat Natyam Music. Two duets were filmed on the lead pair. This song was quite popular in 1960 and many readers might remember it also.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that this song was not yet featured on the Blog. Perhaps, it was waiting for me to write on it. Enjoy this duet featuring Rafi and Manna Dey.

dekhi hamne dhoom re
hoye dekhi hamne dhoom re
arey murli ki vo taan raseeli
manva jaaye jhoom re
manva jaaye jhoom re

dil ko har ek naach jhanjhore
kathak ke yoon baaje tode
[Kathak bol]
bura hai na gaana

o door dakhan mein jaakar dekhi
duniya sur aur taal ki
duniya sur aur taal ki

chhan chhana chhan baje manjire

dil pe jara bhi rahe na kaabu
bharatnatyam dekh ke babu
[Bharatnatyam bol]
bura hai na gaana

bura

sair sapaate karte yaaron
aaye jab punjab mein
haaye aaye jab punjab mein
oye naach vo dekha rang rangeela
jo na dekha khawaab mein

chupke se kho gaya. . .

Searching through his list of songs, I chanced upon this gem of a melodious creation – one of those ‘love at first hear’ type songs that I have really come across after so many days. It has been sitting in my collection forever, and I pulled it today, looking for an unheard or less heard song to include in this post. The composition is quite atypical with a different sound structure attempted. A beautiful melody that I am sure you will also fall in love with.

Remembering C Arjun today, on the anniversary of his passing away (30 April, 1992).

Preparation for this post started a couple of days ago. And in the interim, the industry and the lovers of Hindi films have been shaken by the news of two luminaries passing away yesterday and today. Yesterday morning we got the news about Irfan Khan, who lost his battle with cancer at Kokilaben Hospital in Mumbai. The emotions are still to settle, and the second shocking news came in today morning. Rishi Kapoor, the darling Chintu Baba of the 1970s and 80s, lost his battle with leukemia at another Mumbai hospital today. Irfan Khan, 53 – too yuong, too early. Rishi Kapoor, 67 – lively, and a lot of life still to go. But alas no, this is the ‘as much’ that was ordained.

As I check out the dates on C Arjun today, when he passed away, he was 59. Just about midway between Irfan and Rishi, in terms of years. The writ of life is no one’s command – it is what it is. We see, we compare, we critique, we like, sometimes we ignore. But then, when the finality of the process dawns upon us, one is left with a vacuum somewhere inside that says – wish there was more. . .

Very little details are available about C Arjun’s life and times. The article in Pankaj Raag’s book dedicated to this music director is almost completely based on his work, the films that he did, and the wonderful songs that he has composed. Other than that, very little about the person himself.

He was born on 1st Sep, 1933 in Sindh. His full name – Arjun Chandnani, which was later modified to be C Arjun, for the sake of brevity in film circles, and to avoid any confusion with the name of his mentor music director Bulo C Rani (full name Bulo Chandirani). After partition, his family moved to and settled in Baroda.

C Arjun’s father was musically inclined and was a singer. There is no information available about his training. In one place, there is anecdotal mention that C Arjun fondly remembers being present at the recording of a song by Noorjehaan in Lahore. This anecdotal nugget does not carry any other details. We read about his career initiation in early 1950s – appearing as assistant music director working with Bulo C Rani, in films like ‘Shikaar’ (1955), ‘Aabroo’ (1956), ‘Baadshah Salaamat’ (1956) and ‘Jeevan Saathi’ (1957).

In 1958 came the hit Sindhi film ‘Abana’. In this film, C Arjun shared the credits for music direction with Bulo C Rani, and not just as an assistant. Then in 1960, he got his first break as an independent music director in Hindi cinema with the film ‘Road No. 303’. His career remained very patchy throughout, despite some of the most wonderful songs and ghazals created by him. The songs gained popularity with the listening public, but that never really translated into more work for him from the producers in the industry. Following is the list of films he has composed for,

  • 1961 Main Aur Mera Bhai
  • 1964 Punarmilan
  • 1965 Ek Saal Pehle
  • 1966 Chale Hain Sasural
  • 1966 Sushila
  • 1967 Lambu In Hong Kong
  • 1970 Mangu Dada
  • 1971 Ustad Pedro
  • 1973 Guru Aur Chela
  • 1975 Jai Santoshi Mata
  • 1976 Raksha Bandhan
  • 1977 Aankh Ka Tara
  • 1977 Subah Zaroor Aayegi (possibly a re-release of Sushila from 1966)
  • 1978 Nawab Saheb
  • 1980 Karva Chauth
  • 1981 Kaanoon Aur Mujrim

Unreleased Films
Sant Valmiki
O Mere Jaan e Jigar
Gunaahon Ka Mandir

Besides these, he also has given music to films in Sindhi, Gujarati and Haryanvi. He also has composed music for non-film albums in Sindhi. He was actually in a recording studio, rehearsing with artists for the recording of a Sindhi non-film album release, when he suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away.

Today’s song is from his debut Hindi film ‘Road No 303’. The film is produced under the banner of Mahesh Pictures, Bombay, by Bheeku Bhai and Ratan Kumar. The film is directed by Dharam Kumar. The star cast is listed as Shobha Khote, Mehmood, Bhagwan, KN Singh, Tiwari, Sheelu, Helen, Altaf, Maqbool, Raju, Mirajkar, Ramlal, Fazlu, Majnu, Joshi, Kashi, S Kerawala, Master Nisar, Bakshi and others.

The film has six songs, equally shared between the songwriters Jaan Nisar Akhtar and Naqsh Lyallpuri. This particular song is sung by Asha Bhosle. Only the audio of this song is available, and I request our more knowledgeable readers to please add more information about this song, and the movie itself.

A wonderful creation in my opinion. Listen and enjoy.

I had neither heard this song nor the name of the movie this song is from. Name of the movie is “Road No 303” (1960). YT, whose information is always required to be taken with a pinch of salt, mentions the year as 1963. This B grade movie was a Mahesh Pictures production and it was directed by Dharmesh Kumar. The movie had Mehmood, Shubha Khote,Bhagwan, Helen, Tiwari, K. N. Singh, etc in it. I found that the year of release of this song is variously shown as 1959, 1960 and 1963.
